I’ve setup my email via a VPN to my own server.

  • DNS, mail, business web, cusromer web on VPSes (2, 1 primary, 1 secondary DNS only)
  • Personal email, incoming and outgoing via VPS, personal websites (all static) on local system (RPi 4 8GB)

This gives the advantage that your outgoing email always comes from the VPS ip address (pick a VPS provider that is trusted) and when your line is down, incoming email is cached on your VPS. It’s a tad of double work, but pretty secure. Even connecting to my employer to work from home is not a big issue. (and that connection is limited to it’s own vlan)

Also, with this method, you can route the mail into your network via port 26 when 25 is blocked or even set an outgoing vpn to your VPS and route the email that way. You’ll be provider independent at home. (I even have a private ipv6 /48 via a tunnel broker)

You’ll need to work a lot on your knowledge though, without DNSSEC, SPF, DKIM and DMARC the big 2 (Google and hotmail) will refuse your email.

I’m not sure why people are hating on you, perhaps some kind of advertising thing?

Temu is known for forcing their suppliers to sell below production costs so they can flood the market with cheap junk. Say the same tactic Amazon uses, but to it’s extreme. (and there are loads that already avoid Amazone like the plague it is)

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

As far as I understood It’s not even denying the producers a profit, it’s forcing them to take the loss on the products, just to take a market share.

Amazon ‘only’ prohibits suppliers to make profit (and then buy the company if the product sells).

Yep, Debian was (is) a disaster to configure graphics with modern hardware. It was pure open source (even blocked firefox as the logo was copyright protected). They opened up with a non-free repo for hardware support, but already lost the ‘market share’ on the desktop to Ubuntu (and the load of forks with just a different windoemanager as default… instead of adding a desktop selection on install). Also Ubuntu is offered a lot as option on new hardware.

With snap I’m guessing users migrate back… (a very few at least)

I’m running domoticz with an rflink interface for my rf433 devices. No clue if they support ESPHome, but you can check. It runs confined to my network.

I’m currently trying Summit and it looks very familliar. Testing it.

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve installed thunder next to summit. Both look the same, both feel almostbthe same, but a tad different.

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

Ok, thanks to tips I’ve installed both summit and thunder. I like both, but they feel both a tad different.

  • I like the message list of thunder slightly better then the one in summit
  • I like the reply method of summit a tad better then the one in thunder

Both will stay and be tested. Thanks for the tips and I’ll continue testing and see what will be my main reader/posting app.

I use my 8" Samsung tab S2 for reading and responding. When in portrait the keyboard is to small, in landscape the keyboard I use (Hacker’s keyboard) is perfect.

Also, when you’ve seen more then half of a century, eyes and hands suffer from wear a tad.

Skip the gun. No civilized country will let you have it.

As EU citizen I tend to:

  • Read the news from several newspapers and the independed public broadcasting/news service. (Get multiple views and explanations)
  • Hope that US isn’t dumb enough to let a criminal become president again.
  • Hope that the world won’t explode before I die.
  • Hope that the country won’t flood before I die. (House is 4m below current see level)
  • Try to help the best I can with my knowledge.
  • Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

It’s interesting to see that subscriptions are forced upon users everywhere.

I only game on mobile in games that are basically f2p. When I like something in that game or want to do a monthly pass I pay for that, once. I have deliberately no payment option what so ever linked to the mobile account as I don’t trust Google not to sneak in an unwanted payment. (Or a game fritzing out and doing a payment for me)

Yes, games are entertainment and just like TV/streaming, a subscription could be useful for die-hard gamers, but I see digital content being ‘sold’ for buyers to ‘own’ and then the bought items being removed to much. Corporate greed is spiraling out of control.

I already had games tell me I couldn’t spend when I didn’t order anything, so I’m good this way. No payment method linked to my account without a clear intent to spend that exact moment. Link paypal, spend, unlink paypal works perfectly. (or else when I have cash, buy a giftcard when the amount is close enough to what I want to spend.

I can confirm, forgejo is a good, very lightweight git server you can run on an rpi with room to spare. I’m running with postgresql as backend on the same rpi, mariadb is an option as well.

When you don’t want to selfhost, gitlab is independant and EU (NL?) based, bitbucket is from atlasian (US?) and is also an option.

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, TIL moment. (Gitlab is Dutch, Github is bought by Microsoft were already a while back on the TIL list)

Same here, the manager hiring me left before my employment started. I was a contractor that joined, so I already knew most of the team. Alas, management destroyed the fun in the job. Way to much work, no new knowledged colleagues but we got a truckload of managers to work agile.

Yep, dual sim is a thing. However, my employer wants full control of the phone so they provided an iPhone. (I’m an Android user) The biggest pro of 2 phones is that you can silence the work phone outside work hours.

With my 1st temp job ('99) I told my boss that the best feature on the work phone the power button was. The moment I left the building it would be turned off. Alas, those modern phones have a complete sequence to go trough to get them off, so I now use the automated do not desturb. Alas, iPhone has only times you can set daily, instead weekday dependent times. Between 18:00 and 7:00 the thing is quiet, no exceptions.

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

Yep, when they have control overthe phone, yep. This iPhone tells me it’s managed by my organisation so they can do what they want with it, including looking up the location of the device.

I’m glad I never found that option. ;)

TheInsane42,

Then still you can set Linux as default. Lilo had an option to reboot with an option to set a 1 time default. (that was neat) On dual boot hardware, I always set the one I want to default boot, which is in my case always Linux. (must still have a dual boot laptop somewhere)

When I don’t have the cash for a paintjob, I shouldn’t have bought the house (Yep, home owner here). I make way enough cash to have somebody paint my house. However, when I hire somebody to paint the house, I can’t spend the cash on hobbies I like to do or improve the house the way I want to.

At the moment however, finding somebody that is willing to paint a house is a huge challenge. You just can’t find the personel anymore to paint. Everybody want to be overhead and manage, nobody want to work. There is a hude shortage of skilled labour at the moment, so I’m very glad I can do it myself, inclouing the needed wood repair. (buying new window sills will cost about 25% of the current value of the house and they are ugly as all you can get is plastic)
