VubDapple,

Jalapeño and salami? Looks good whatever it is.

VubDapple,

The scale seems off. I remember these things being much larger compared to the height of a human.

VubDapple, (edited )

But it’s a cou(sin) to do so

VubDapple,

Well, perhaps Marcus Aurelius? Kind of the original philosopher-king.

VubDapple,

Stevens is more like Bach than like Mozart. Lots of repetition in his themes but layered and created in counterpoint like no other contemporary artist. Love that guy.

VubDapple,

I think he does fit. Consider the genre spanning records he did in the 80s like Joe’s Garage with every song from a different style. Consider how he found talent in unusual places and incorporated it, for instance Ruth playing the marimba in Inca Roads. But point also taken. No one mocks like All mocks

VubDapple,

He’s not everyone’s cup of tea but he was one for the ages. I think it a quite reasonable comparison to speak of Zapps in the same breath as Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, etc.

VubDapple,

I haven’t met gates and I agree these days he comes across pleasantly, but perhaps you are not old enough to remember stories of what he was like in his 30s and 40s when Microsoft was younger. He was a tyrant and viscously anticompetitive. As a husband my understanding is that he cheated on his wife (not uncommon I know but still hurtful). He might have become a somewhat better person, maybe, but he certainly wasn’t one when he was making his fortune.

VubDapple,

The first time I opened vim (it was probably just vi at the time) I couldn’t exit it and had to shut down the computer by holding down the power button (!) to regain control of the machine. It took a while before I tried it again. Ultimately nano felt like it was for kids and emacs felt like an even worse option than vi so I memorized a few sequences, eg :q!, :wq, how to enter the insert mode and how to exit it and simple edit commands like dd and x and this gave me enough proficiency to get by.

Most all the terminal commands require prior study before they become easy to use. Its because Unix was created by engineers rather than by ui/ux design professionals.

VubDapple,

Nor weird at all. It requires a social and emotional maturation process to occur before an adult can appreciate the golden rule. When this developmental process fails you have a chronological adult who is developmentally immature. One of the technical names used to refer to this outcome is narcissism. Such people have prominent narcissistic traits.

VubDapple,

Now that’s a connection I would not have made without your help. Thanks OP, my evening has been improved.

VubDapple,

Glad to know it. These Trek memes have reminded me how much I loved Trek. My wife and I have been watching Strange New Worlds as a result and of course it’s good. Thanks to all who post here. Your wholesome influence is felt.

That’s the way! Using the same rhetorical pattern they are used to hearing, “they took our jobs!” and slightly modifying it to point to a different “evil”, the corporations rather than the traditional scapegoats.

VubDapple,

Its manipulation, but it comes from a place of needing care and a fear that if exaggerations are not made that care will not come or will come and not stay.

VubDapple,

That’s what insecure attachment is my dude and that’s also why vampire stories are so compelling. They play on the basic fear that ones need for care will be entrapping and lead to further abuse.

VubDapple,

Can someone point me to what he did recently to have this meme wake up again?

VubDapple,

That’s how it works in most abusive relationships. The perpetrator behaves terribly and then is forgiven. Like the tide coming in each time the abuse is worse, more damaging or in this case more demeaning, but the cost of exiting the relationship is too high because it means to become alone and people hate loneliness more than being shit upon so they complain and stay and hope that this time it will be better even though if they think about it they know it won’t be.
