It’s not the first thought that comes to mind that matters, what’s important is what you after that

This was in the context of racism. I was raised in an racist environment, and I was struggling with the awful thoughts that had been indoctrinated in to me bubbling up when I encountered folk that were the target of that racism.

That quote helped me not be hung up on guilt and self flagellation, and instead to focus on being the person I want to be, rather than the person I was taught to be.

When I’m running, yes I do. When I’m doing any other form of exercise? Not really.

But I really love feeling fit

Do you ever get people assuming that you’re a trans woman?

I transitioned.

The way I move through the world and the way people treat me is just fundamentally different to the way that they used to treat me. I have seen and lived “both sides” as it were

I sometimes still have trouble believing that it’s real…

Have you had any bad experiences with people on Lemmy?

I was recently talking to some friends about Lemmy and the whole Fediverse idea, as it seemed like a really cool part of the Internet. As I was talking about it, though, I realized how unusually friendly this whole place is, and I joked that I “surprisingly haven’t found any bigotry.”...

It’s interesting, we’ve got blahaj.zone itself, and even though it doesn’t have as many users as our lemmy instance, we’re lucky if we see a report every couple of days over there.

The microblogging fediverse is more aggressively opposed to queerphobic bigots I think, so they never get a chance to take root over there, but here on the threadiverse, lots of them fly under the radar of admins that aren’t the targets of their bigotry

I’m an admin for a relatively busy instance, so I see all of the bigotry, and there is more of it than I’m comfortable with :\

There’s a lot of bigots out there that have moved over from reddit.

A little, but most of it isn’t even targeted at our users. Lots of the stuff I see is just stuff reported by our users, in communities that have nothing to do with us specifically.

banning and defederating communities

Hey all, I recently left reddit like many of you. I have a question regarding lemmy and the fediverse on the history of banning and defederation. I have noticed several posts calling for varying communities to be disconnected. were these removal requests as prevalent before the mass migration? Usually I am all for communities...

The reason I am on lemmy.world is that so far, they have basically blocked nothing

lemmy.world/instances

I don't, but I know that I'm rolling the dice when I do it that way, and I'm willing to live with the consequences.

And I say this as someone who regularly misses sarcasm when it's delivered to me in person :)

It still won’t make sense when you’re sober, but you get used to it :)
