bleistift2,

I wonder how many people even know that the hyphen works on google.

bleistift2,

Don’t give them ideas.

Henry Stickmin, I hereby sentence you to death. You are to raise the money for the required medical procedure by slave work for the next 75 years.

bleistift2,

OP made it very clear in this very thread that they know the difference.

bleistift2, (edited )

Because you didn’t proofread. Don’t blame technology for your shortcomings.

[No, I’m not an apple fanboy. I just hate the excuse “It happened on its own”]

bleistift2,

The issue probably depends heavily on the installed software and might surface for some while others don’t have it.

bleistift2,

The jre/jdk issue was pretty painless to deal with as well.

What’s driving me away is that I have to deal with it at all. The command just fails and leaves you to google the solution. That’s annoying and unnecessary.

I know now that Manjaro isn’t the OS for me if I’m not willing to do that.

someone made a computer make up pixels in a way that is disgusting

I like that take. It lends itself to comparison: The Saw movies were well-received (at first), even though most people would abhor hurting others in this way.

bleistift2,

[…Methadone] relieves cravings and removes withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal management using methadone can be accomplished […] or simply maintained for the rest of the patient’s life.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methadone (emphasis mine)

You also ignored my other example.

bleistift2,

That’s unfortunate. I was hoping to find arguments in favor of your point of view that are more substantial than proof by assertion.

While I obviously don’t agree with your take on the subject, I’m still glad you voiced your opinions, so we could examine and evaluate them.

bleistift2,

“it is enabling it doesn’t stop distribution“

Norgur’s point is that you didn’t provide any reasoning why that should be the case.

bleistift2,

your argument is implying that if somehow we allow them to use AI generated child porn that it will somehow stop them from seeking the real stuff out or is somehow “better.”There is literally no evidence that suggests that in the slightest.

Of course. How would you procure such evidence? Give a group of pedophiles access to AI generated content and check if they molest children significantly less than a control group?

Pedophilia is an illness. […] You really need to […] take a macro view of what you are arguing in favor of.

I’m not defending pedophilia. Given that access to pedophilia treatment and prevention of sexual abuse is often lacking, I was starting a discussion of whether AI-generated content might be part of the prevention of sexual abuse of minors. After all, there are similar programs for drug abusers. Take methadone substitution as an example. Or establishments that are called “Drückerstube” in German (a very lacking translation would be “injection rooms”) – clean rooms where drug addicts have access to clean utensils for consuming drugs.

bleistift2,

And what happens when they start making requests of real underage people?

That’s the whole point of my argument. They don’t need to make request for real people if they can get fake ones of equal quality. Your argument reads like “We can’t let people have meat. What if they start eating live cows?”

bleistift2,

Isn’t it a good thing for pedophiles to have an outlet for their desires that doesn’t involve harming children? Am I not seeing an obvious downside?

bleistift2,

pedophiles should receive treatment for that instead

In a world where many people cannot afford basic healthcare or – if they can afford it – where healthcare isn’t available in the required quantity, does your argument still hold?

bleistift2,

five year bachelors’ equivalent

In Germany (and Europe, I believe, since the Bologna reforms), a bachelor’s is (usually) 3 years and a master’s is 5 years. That might be why you got to do research and I didn’t. How long are your master’s courses?

bleistift2, (edited )

The best part of working in a meat grinder startup were the Linux masters teaching you stuff like

cat /dev/random > /dev/pty23

or

su _otheruser_
chsh -s /bin/false

bleistift2,

*ASCIIbetically. The alphabet doesn’t know digits.

bleistift2,

I grew up with DD.MM.YYYY. But I think, MM/DD makes sense in everyday usage. You don’t often need to specify dates with year accuracy. “Jane’s prom is on 7th September” – it’s obvious which year is meant. Then it’s sensible to start with the larger unit, MM, instead of DD.

Even in writing you see that the year is always given like an afterthought: “7th September**,** 2023“.

bleistift2,

I say “The 7th of September” because I was taught British English in school.

bleistift2,

Where?

bleistift2,

Easy to use, doesn’t need an account, doesn’t even need to be installed as an extension. Works for non-US amazon.

Thank you for promoting this!

bleistift2,

For browsers there seems to be an extension that makes the starts of words bold. A colleague of mine said it helped them read better. To me, that makes sense, since dyslexics might have trouble finding where words start and end.

bleistift2,

One of my English teachers once said something like “The more you write the more I have to read. So keep it short.”
