ch00f,

There’s a great video explaining cartoon animal neckties: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWo5aUzJ4_c

TL;DR: It’s a shortcut that allows the animators to animate the body at a lower framerate than the head (like standing still and speaking).

ch00f,

My mom’s friend was nearly pickpocketed in front of the Trevi Fountain by a man with two thumbs on his right hand. My mom caught him with his hand in her purse and made a big scene. He ran away.

I was 11 years old and had my camera out and ready and it kills me that I didn’t get a photo of his hand.

I sort of left the hobbyist electronics world back in 2018, and now everything seems to have an embedded Raspberry Pi in it. What's the best way to catch up?

I’m an EE by trade focusing on embedded devices, but most of my work is in relatively low-power STM32 applications. When I stopped following developments in hobby kits, it was mostly Arduino Unos slowly driving I2C OLED displays....

ch00f,

and nobody knows how to code anything and read datasheets anymore.

You seem a bit bitter which I can relate to. As someone who cut his teeth writing assembly for an 8051, I remember feeling a bit cheesed by people using arduinos to do what could be done with a 555.

My career has gotten comfy, but I can feel my skills stagnating with all this new stuff coming out. I of course would never ship a product with a Raspberry Pi embedded in it, but I’d like to have a feel for how to solve problems using newer more advanced hardware. With that in mind, do you have any recommendations?

ch00f,

I hope that aluminum piano is bolted down tight.

ch00f,

Should have said 'this."

Why is the usage of 'this" and “that” so arbitrary in English?

ch00f,

Back in like 2013, there was a fruit cream soda with Shaquille O’neal branding called “Shaq Soda.” I think there was strawbeery and blueberry cream flavor.

I bought one at 7-11 and brought it to the bar across the street and asked them to make me a “Shaq and Jack.”

It was not good.

ch00f,

Because OP didn’t want to pay for content-aware fill.

ch00f,

I love how some old military tech is like some shit an 8 year old would think up.

As someone who has operated a camera before, I have a hard time believing this camera ever took a single useful picture.

ch00f,

I literally bought a Lightphone II because I was spending too much time on reddit. Like, I’d stay in bed for an hour just scrolling.

I’ve recently slacked off and started keeping my iPhone (on wifi) next to me when I sleep. I loose interest in like 20 minutes.

I’ve made a point of not posting or commenting on reddit since the recent debacle, but it’s really frustrating when I have some OC that would be great for a niche community that just doesn’t exist in any real numbers on lemmy.

like Playdate dev or Framework laptop.

ch00f,

I’m using the Thunder app and none of your links work. What’s the best way to get to a linked community in Thunder?

ch00f,

Relevant XKCD xkcd.com/1623/

Though don’t get me started on how many things are called “holograms.”

Pepper’s ghost isn’t a hologram. It’s just a reflection with more steps.

ch00f,

One of my favorites is in Volver. The woman murders her husband and had to come to the door when a neighbor knocks. She has blood splattered on her face.

The English translation has her explain “I cut myself,” while the original Spanish is a much funnier “women’s troubles,” which better explains the confused look on the neighbor’s face.

ch00f,

I picked up a Solitaire app. ScreenTime says I played 6.5 hours last week.

ch00f, (edited )

Magnetic soap holder.

You shove a little metal bit into your soap bar, and the bar dangles from a magnet on a stand that holds it over the sink.

Soap dries quickly, no scum in the soap dish, any drippage falls right into the sink.

Only downside is the magnet falls out when the bar gets smaller, so you have to mash the old bar into the bottom of the new one to keep from wasting it.

ch00f,

Buying a new car is worse than keeping an old one

Also, what do you think happens to your car when you replace it with an electric car? Do most people just drive their old cars into the ocean when they upgrade?

ch00f,

Electric cars are indeed much worse for the climate at production time than combustion cars likely will be throughout their entire lifetime.

Break even point is currently around 13k miles though it depends on where you live.

reuters.com/…/when-do-electric-vehicles-become-cl…

And that’s not even counting the growing market of battery recyclers.

ch00f,

I swear there has been a big uptick on the other site of videos depicting and celebrating the brutalization of shoplifters.

I think people are increasingly inclined to just hate poor people.

ch00f,

Switching from a 5mpg truck to a 10mpg truck does more for the environment than switching from 40mpg car to a 55mpg car.
