cwagner,

I kept getting errors that no one else encountered :/

But that was way over a decade ago. Nowadays, I work from home with .NET legacy software, so I need to run Windows, only the modern .NET is crossplatform. The fact that 3 of my top 10 favourite pieces of software (DirectoryOpus, EmEditor, MediaMonkey) are Windows-only doesn’t help either.

cwagner,
  • Bitwarden: Paid, but with a free tier, ticks all your boxes
  • KeepassXC: Free, ticks all but browser access (great android and browser integration, though), syncs through any file sync service (WebDAV support makes for a nicer Keepass2Android experience, though)

Note that I’d not recommend Keepass for multiple users, I heard of sync issues there and you can’t do partial shares. Not an issue for me, though. With Bitwarden, the free tier offers 1 extra user.

Personally I don’t want to be dependent on some other service (like bitwarden hosting for me), but also not be reliant on my own server for something as important as passwords, that’s why I’ve been using Keepass(XC) for the last 7 years (thought it was longer, but it turns out I had LastPass premium till 2016. Fuckers).

cwagner,

Industrial Rock: Obviously the godfathers of industrial rock ;) KMFDM: Don’t blow your top from 1988 Black Hole 2022. Older Oomph! songs are amazing I.N.R.I. vs. Jahwe 1996. Revolting Cocks are also fun Jack in the Crack 2006. A lot of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails stuff arguably also belongs to the genre.

For metal, we have the link between them: Ministry who are pretty much for metal what KMFDM is for Rock Just One Fix 1992. Quite different is Dutch The Monolith Deathcult who are one of the few Industrial Death Metal bands Wrath of the Ba’ath 2008. Hanzel und Gretyl are a military party industrial metal band ;) Fukken Über Death Party 2006 (Note: they use Nazi Germany sound samples and imagery, though satirized). Pain’s Shut your Mouth 2001 is one of my all-time favorite songs and videos

Okay, I guess that’s enough for now ;)

cwagner,

Folk, Folk-Rock, Folk-Metal, Classical, Progressive Death Metal, Grindcore, Melodic Black Metal with Death influences, Industrial Metal, Industrial Rock

Also, quite some metal outside those genres, but those would be the main ones. Oh, and some almost metal K-Pop (e.g. Dreamcatcher) via my wife ;)

I run away from Rap, RnB, most electronic music (Some few exceptions, and I also like the freaky stuff like Gabber and faster up to speedcore or terrorcore) unless it’s mixed with metal.

cwagner,

Thanks, currently listening through it, I like what I’m hearing so far :)

cwagner, (edited )

I see downvoting of comments for stuff that does not require mods, but is still people being assholes or something not belonging. I don’t vote enough on submissions to have an opinion there :D

edit: word order

cwagner,

I don’t, but I watch people working a food truck on twitch. Usually no issues, but the stream has a CTFO: “Cancel The Fucking Order” emote because of this guy: livestreamfails.com/post/7591

given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

Also, seems kind of scary that this implies a future where so many people are in prison that their vote could actually tip the balance ?

cwagner,

if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

You are talking about the USA, right? I don’t think anyone sees the USA prison system as something targeting reform and rehabilitation.

Felons don’t lose their right to vote in most of Europe, and that right is actually seen as a human right by the EU.

cwagner,

For Details : Disfranchisement#United_Kingdom

The “some way” seems to mostly be “fuck your rulings, court”.

cwagner,

What? Just because they want people punished instead of rehabilitated does not mean that everyone should get capital punishment. What kind of weird straw man is that?

And the US does have capital punishment.

cwagner,

Once a day before going to bed, including interdental brushes.

My teeth are doing well, and probably relevant:

a) Keto, so next to no sugar/carbs in my diet
b) acidic drinks (coffee, tea, once a week quite some cola zero with some alcohol, half a bottle of wine once or twice a week), which makes brushing attack my teeth (I have light acid damage already)

Essentially a brush for flossing, some find them easier to use than normal flossing, but there are also people like me who have super tight teeth and the floss can’t go through the top.

Have you had any bad experiences with people on Lemmy?

I was recently talking to some friends about Lemmy and the whole Fediverse idea, as it seemed like a really cool part of the Internet. As I was talking about it, though, I realized how unusually friendly this whole place is, and I joked that I “surprisingly haven’t found any bigotry.”...

cwagner,

Bigotry? Not yet. Toxicity? Quite a bit.

The first big example was the reaction of quite a few people when beehaw defederated shitjustworks and lemmy.world, people called beehaw users and their admins all kind of names, sometimes even in communities and by users who were not on either instance.

Then Threads. There are a lot of users who think people who don’t agree with everyone defederating Threads before they even support federation are barely even human, and anyone who questions it, will be called all kinds of names. Just pointing that out gets you downvoted.

Then there are the usual people who can’t handle other people having different opinions/experiences, I recently had to defend that my Reddit experience (when I use it which is very rare now) is barely different from before, and no, it did not turn to shit and no, it’s not full of bots, and no, the quality of discussion is still high because I curated my subs.

On Reddit, I would unsub from communities behaving like that (e.g. I decided to leave /r/Fantasy when I realized that not hating Rings of Power or the WoT show is not behaviour the sub deems acceptable), on Lemmy, communities don’t have enough of an identity for that yet, so for now I just block some users.

cwagner,

Not hugely, I think. A lot of it was actual comments.

But seeing as I’m on my own single-user instance, I might disable them at some point just to see ;)

cwagner,

I get called a tankie for pointing out the US role in destabilizing Ukraine and supporting the coup there than led directly to the civil war in Donbass.

Well, now I’m curious. I know next to nothing about this, I barely knew where Ukraine was before 2016, so please share ;)

cwagner,

ou just have to be logged into the instance to see it from their home page.

Huh? I see everything there without being logged in.

What Will Be the Singularity Endgame: Utopia, Dystopia, Collapse, or Extinction? Why?

The Singularity is a hypothetical future event where technology growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, leading to unpredictable transformations in our reality^1^. It’s often associated with the point at which artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence, potentially causing radical changes in society. I’d...

cwagner,

Utopia, I believe in the robots. It’s a bit of a shame none of us humans will be around, but that’s life.

cwagner,

One to create communities on discuss.tchncs.de (my former “trying Lemmy out instance”), and one on my single user instance lemmy.cwagner.me ;) I use the same account to write in both English and German, but I generally prefer English anyway.

cwagner,

That is only relevant for instances hosted in Germany, and also why feddit.de and discuss.tchncs.de (like most instances, though) defederated from NSFW instances.

Age gates are a joke and almost no one uses them, xhamster even flouts the law and changes the German subdomain whenever there is a new idiotic ISP DNS block.

Related anecdote: I was hosting an erotica forum (which I started doing when I was 14 or 15 …) when the law came to be, we had to get a Jugendschutzbeauftragter (youth protection officer; luckily something that existed “as a service” for like 5€/month) and implement an age gate. This killed the site.

How are we going to pay for all this?

I’m really enjoying lemmy. I think we’ve got some growing pains in UI/UX and we’re missing some key features (like community migration and actual redundancy). But how are we going to collectively pay for this? I saw an (unverified) post that Reddit received 400M dollars from ads last year. Lemmy isn’t going to be free....

cwagner,

Everyone? At once and next week? It would just die.

Kbin.social had a nice post (check their meta community for it; it’s technically a different software, but still), how the instance went from costing $2-3 a month to 1000. And that’s a tiny fraction of reddit.

Development needs to advance just to better handle current user counts, there’s a lot of things that simply never were an issue when only a few hundred users were active.

The way it will work, is probably donations, maybe some very few paid instances.
