cwagner, to asklemmy in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

You are talking about the USA, right? I don’t think anyone sees the USA prison system as something targeting reform and rehabilitation.

Felons don’t lose their right to vote in most of Europe, and that right is actually seen as a human right by the EU.

cwagner, to asklemmy in What's the benefit of using Kbin over Lemmy?
  • Personal taste, but I think the user interface is far superior to Lemmy. Even with scripts to help Lemmy, kbin still looks better.
  • Politics. Some might have issues with the political positions of the Lemmy devs, no matter if they influence the software or not
  • It doesn’t matter that much. They are both federating with each other, you can subscribe to magazines from Lemmy, and to communities from kbin.
cwagner, to asklemmy in Have you had any bad experiences with people on Lemmy?

Bigotry? Not yet. Toxicity? Quite a bit.

The first big example was the reaction of quite a few people when beehaw defederated shitjustworks and lemmy.world, people called beehaw users and their admins all kind of names, sometimes even in communities and by users who were not on either instance.

Then Threads. There are a lot of users who think people who don’t agree with everyone defederating Threads before they even support federation are barely even human, and anyone who questions it, will be called all kinds of names. Just pointing that out gets you downvoted.

Then there are the usual people who can’t handle other people having different opinions/experiences, I recently had to defend that my Reddit experience (when I use it which is very rare now) is barely different from before, and no, it did not turn to shit and no, it’s not full of bots, and no, the quality of discussion is still high because I curated my subs.

On Reddit, I would unsub from communities behaving like that (e.g. I decided to leave /r/Fantasy when I realized that not hating Rings of Power or the WoT show is not behaviour the sub deems acceptable), on Lemmy, communities don’t have enough of an identity for that yet, so for now I just block some users.

cwagner, to asklemmy in People who work in food service or customer service: What’s the dumbest thing a customer ever insisted was “the law” or “illegal”?

I don’t, but I watch people working a food truck on twitch. Usually no issues, but the stream has a CTFO: “Cancel The Fucking Order” emote because of this guy: livestreamfails.com/post/7591

cwagner, to asklemmy in What password manager do you recommend?
  • Bitwarden: Paid, but with a free tier, ticks all your boxes
  • KeepassXC: Free, ticks all but browser access (great android and browser integration, though), syncs through any file sync service (WebDAV support makes for a nicer Keepass2Android experience, though)

Note that I’d not recommend Keepass for multiple users, I heard of sync issues there and you can’t do partial shares. Not an issue for me, though. With Bitwarden, the free tier offers 1 extra user.

Personally I don’t want to be dependent on some other service (like bitwarden hosting for me), but also not be reliant on my own server for something as important as passwords, that’s why I’ve been using Keepass(XC) for the last 7 years (thought it was longer, but it turns out I had LastPass premium till 2016. Fuckers).

cwagner, to asklemmy in Why do Gezendong-style-tankies support Putin and Xi-Xinpin so much ?

I get called a tankie for pointing out the US role in destabilizing Ukraine and supporting the coup there than led directly to the civil war in Donbass.

Well, now I’m curious. I know next to nothing about this, I barely knew where Ukraine was before 2016, so please share ;)

cwagner, to asklemmy in What's the worst company ever. Period.

Because by 1944 they used around 4500 forced labourers (foreigners, POWs) in dangerous condition. Oh, and they apparently bought 170 female prisoners, who then all died during some experiment:

A Bayer employee wrote to Rudolf Höss, the Auschwitz commandant: “The transport of 150 women arrived in good condition. However, we were unable to obtain conclusive results because they died during the experiments. We would kindly request that you send us another group of women to the same number and at the same price.”

cwagner, to asklemmy in What's the benefit of using Kbin over Lemmy?

Yeah, I keep forgetting about that because I care about as much about Mastodon as I care about Twitter ;)

A side effect of it, that I do care about and sorely miss on Lemmy: Tags for posts. Like flairs for Reddit, but you can have multiple.

cwagner, to asklemmy in How fluent do you think one have to be to be considered "bilingual"?

I’d say somewhere between 2 and 3.

The first option would also result in the weird situation that most South Africans (11 official languages), who use English in everyday life, would not count as bilingual because there’s still a bit of a difference to fully native speakers. My wife grew up with Sesotho, but started learning English from 1st grade on and all her classes in school and university have been in English. Her English is better than mine (5th grade, and all but English-classes in German), but worse than that of my USA or British friends.

born in a bilingual country / completely indifferent to native, educated speakers of the language

While we are on the topic, you wouldn’t normally use “indifferent” like that. A better word would be “indistinguishable”.

For Details : Disfranchisement#United_Kingdom

The “some way” seems to mostly be “fuck your rulings, court”.

cwagner, to asklemmy in What's your real-life superpower?

I’m pretty good at translating between MBA and software developer, so they understand each other, despite being a software developer myself ;)

cwagner, to asklemmy in Have you ever gotten scammed, package stolen, or been a victim of fraud in any way?

Yeah, early-ish days of ecigs (started vaping fully in 2012, so I’m guessing this was around '13/'14), ordered a mod off of facebook, wired the money via WU, the end. And yes, that seems risky, but that was also how things were done, few of the advanced mods were made by companies (those only made lame stuff that looks closer to the teenager ecigs they now sell at the supermarket), instead you had people tinkering in their basements ;)

cwagner, to asklemmy in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?

I kept getting errors that no one else encountered :/

But that was way over a decade ago. Nowadays, I work from home with .NET legacy software, so I need to run Windows, only the modern .NET is crossplatform. The fact that 3 of my top 10 favourite pieces of software (DirectoryOpus, EmEditor, MediaMonkey) are Windows-only doesn’t help either.

What? Just because they want people punished instead of rehabilitated does not mean that everyone should get capital punishment. What kind of weird straw man is that?

And the US does have capital punishment.

cwagner, to asklemmy in What's the benefit of using Kbin over Lemmy?

What specifically is different regarding how political discussions are handled over there?

Absolutely nothing. But the devs (or at least one, not sure), have strong political views that a lot of people take offense with. Search Lemmy & tankie if you want to know more.
