I’d recommend Linux Mint with the XFCE desktop over Xubuntu, because they’re mostly the same thing but Mint doesn’t use Snap packages by default while Ubuntu does and Mint is better suited for desktop usage due to their various nice little config tools.

You might be better off getting an Android tablet and installing Linux on top of Android.

Need Some Total Noob Advice for Installing and Running Linux

Alright, peeps, I want to build Linux on my new PC and need some help with that. On my old PC, I had kubuntu installed, which I liked (at least until downloading Skype fried most of my installers and rebuffed all attempts at deinstallation). When installing kubuntu, I had a lot of help (and by a lot, I mean my friend did like...

Since you’re interested in KDE, why not try Fedora Kinoite?

It’s an immutable distribution in much the same was as Steam OS 3. For individual pieces of software, you just install Flatpak versions. It’s deeply convenient if you don’t want to perform maintenance on your PC and want it to “just work”.

If that’s not noob friendly, what is?

UltimateGuitar.com

It used to be entirely free and the vast majority of its tablature was uploaded by community members for free.

The app used to be a one-time purchase. Thankfully I did purchase it back then and they grandfathered me in with a lifetime pro membership, but I can’t blame the people who would never want to use the site/app when they’ve effectively paywalled a ton of community content.

LMDE is also good, just a different version of Mint. Basically works the same.

Huh, the way I say Persephone (per-seh-fuh-knee), Saxophone would be pronounced sax-aw-fuh-knee or maybe sax-oh-phony (the way I say saxophone normally in my accent is sacks-uh-phone)

Par-tik-lees

Probably pronounced the same but my brain breaks it up like this:

Part-ih-klees

I just deleted my entire library and redownloaded it.

A lot of my files were shitty 480p versions of movies from the Napster days. Now they’re all 1080p, with a few 720p exceptions (mainly tv series episodes). All in all 500 something files in total. Now just watching uTorrent slowly download them all. Hopefully my VPN keeps the eyes off of me…

Can confirm Transmission and Deluge are both solid

entropicdrift,
@entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

They don’t. I use Deluge inside a Docker container and route that container’s networking through another container running Gluetun. This way all traffic flowing to and from the Deluge container necessarily goes through my VPN, not counting the couple of ports exposed outside the container so that the web UI works.

So, not a Deluge feature, but I enjoy how much control the more modular setup gets me.

Sure, that makes sense. Honestly, IMO you should use whatever stack works well and is convenient for you to keep updated. If it’s stupid but it works, it isn’t stupid.

You can dump the firmware and hardware decryption keys to allow an emulator like Yuzu or Ryujinx to impersonate your Switch and let you play online from a PC. You can also dump your saves and games so you could play your exact same files on an emulator.

Besides that, there’s CFW, homebrew apps, you could install Android and dual boot, there’s game mods you can run on the Switch hardware instead of in an emulator, you can run emulators that have been ported to Switch (PS1, DS, etc)

Be aware, however, Nintendo is aggressive with banning, so mod at your own risk.

entropicdrift,
@entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Nintendo does occasionally pull a bro move and offer replacement under warranty after the period has lapsed if there’s a widespread issue, like in the case of Joycons with stick drift

entropicdrift,
@entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Agreed, it’s just best not to assume everyone knows how to do that or that they ought to

entropicdrift,
@entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I disagree. It’s best not to assume that, especially when it’s someone who is actively asking for advice.

I use both, but Mint is strictly better if you want a no-fuss system that just works and will continue to do so

can I be a Free Software advocate but still use non-free software??

I’m asking this because one time, while browsing the GNU website, I noticed that some of the members’ emails had “gmail” on them!! And I asked myself how would that be possible?? And I think other members of the FSF had Gmail too. Why? Richard Stallman is against Gmail, so why would those memberse use it?? Would that...
