Man that place. I know it’s cliche to talk about it like talking about your ex on a date, but I posted there for good reason.

I found the solution to a rare bug that was bothering a group of people. I posted the solution, and my account was immediately banned sitewide for violating the terms of service, whatever that means.

I thought to myself: yeah… it was a mistake coming here. Leave it to the bots to have conversations with themselves.

It was a solution to a Lutris bug. Basically, flatpak containers can use these things called portals to gain access to specific files and directories via a file chooser rather than broad access or manually assigned access.

In this case, my wine installation was crashing because some part of it was trying to obtain a lock on a directory object, which is an unsupported feature when accessing a directory through a portal. The error message is something completely unrelated like can’t draw window with a string of hex values. It took me a few hours to track down the real root cause.

Oh well. Works on my machine. Also, there’s a fix on the development branch now. I made a write-up, posted it, and it’s all gone. I should have known better honestly. It works great for some people but anybody can arbitrarily receive unfair treatment with no recourse at any time. I’m satisfied knowing that eventually the fix will get out to everybody eventually. It’s just a shame I couldn’t leave a signpost behind.

How often do you back up?

I was wondering how often does one choose to make and keep back ups. I know that “It depends on your business needs”, but that is rather vague and unsatisfying, so I was hoping to hear some heuristics from the community. Like say I had a workstation/desktop that is acting as a server at a shop (taking inventory / sales...

You got me there! Not fireproof. In that case I’m just hoping that having two off-site backups at different locations has me covered, but that’s a good idea. I should consider fireproof foil.

Another perspective is data hoarding.

I have system images of machines of relatives who have died. Many of the photos that I have retained are the only ones. However, that was more an emergent utility than a motivating one.

I’ve got third-party cookies disabled entirely. I click whatever makes the dialogue go away faster.

Proprietary when flatpak exists, and it doesn’t properly address how apps should dynamically request access to things they need. Every time I’ve used either solution I’ve run into some permissions problem.

I’ve seriously been writing down the pros and cons thinking about switching over to Linux on my main desktop at home. It covers all the games I play now. I was very surprised.

Without the games to hold me back, I don’t see why I wouldn’t.

Follow Up: I’m on Linux mint! And my two favorite Windows games work just fine with zero configuration with Steam.

2nd. Ubuntu is the place to be if you want your best chances for immediate compatibility, and search results will favor your popular configuration if you have issues.

I don’t have money for a new SSD right now but my current SSD is mostly empty, 2TB. I turned off BitLocker to facilitate easy copying of files and because I’m pretty sure secure boot would be a pain. I’m running Linux Mint and I hope to go back into the windows install as little as possible. Maybe one day I’ll dump it entirely.

I’m on an Ubuntu derivative called Mint, and on the first boot it gave me a pop up from the driver tool recommending that I change to the proprietary driver with an option for one click automatic download and install.

You are correct that this is detected and handled.

Me vs my ISP

So I was looking into getting port forwarding set up and I realized just how closed-off the internet has gotten since the early days. It’s concerning. It used to be you would buy your own router and connect it to the internet, and that router would control port-forwarding and what-have-you....

Those attributes are an important part of what I like about her! Very direct, very plain to a fault. She has never and probably will never have an interest in playing interpersonal games. Zero drama. Loyal, because she doesn’t like change. She’s obsessive in her interests meaning we both easily get sufficient time to be our own person.

Sure, she’s exceptionally sensitive about certain textures and sounds, but I understand because I’m the same way. Meeting her was like living a life where everyone speaks this language that I just wasn’t born with, and finding someone else who is just as confused as I am was really validating.

So yes, I suggested that we marry, and she says yes you will suffice… which is perhaps the highest compliment she has ever paid me.

Haha, well, I told my family that a person has to get to know her. She seems bitter at first but that’s just how she is. Besides, they don’t have to live with her. I do.

Not using her outward appearance, countenance, or facial expressions as indicative of her true feelings is part of the package. It takes getting used to, and it’s not right for everyone.

“Sufficient” is her elation.

We did–After we agreed to get married, because we were quite sure, but at the same time we didn’t want to impose such a stark change right away in case the change would exceed one’s ability to cope with change which could lead to panic, meltdowns, etc. Neither of us handle change very well. We didn’t actually get married immediately of course. She packed up a pod and moved in next. It was months before.

We also talked about having kids right away. Not having them right away! But we talked about it immediately, I think like five minutes in, because isn’t it important to know?

As a counterpoint: nothing in life is without risk. I’ve seen friends take it slow and end up divorced, too.

No kidding. My employer has top quality health insurance too, and in the USA that’s a seriously big deal when your prospective partner has a health condition.

I think it comes down to the culture. A minuscule improvement to a file system is big news in the Linux community. There’s also lots of academic interest in the performance critical parts of the kernel that you just can’t emulate with a closed source model. Is anyone writing papers on how to obtain a 2% improvement in the task scheduler on Windows?

Linux dominates the server market, so even small improvements matter when you’re talking about a server farm with thousands of machines or the latest supercomputer. Many, many people care about the scalability of Linux. On Windows, we say: NTFS? It’s good enough. The user won’t notice on modern SSDs.

I think the implication is that the customer is drinking alcohol frequently lately because the lady ordered in the way you would order many alcoholic beverages with ice.

I think the penny is overrated. I don’t interpret + 100 to be a guarantee, only that desirable outcomes are much more likely. I see it as a long-term general buff but difficult to direct.
