How to get a private car

Hello internet users. Someone in my family is looking to buy a car and wanted some recommendations for a private one. They are looking to buy new, and need Android Auto and CarPlay. I know all new cars suck for privacy by default, but I was hoping someone here could offer some insight as to which cars can be made better and what...

They are looking to buy new, and need Android Auto and CarPlay

I was active on an automotive forum around the time when that sort of thing started to be seen as a "need" by car salesmen and some of their more enthusiastic customers. The big new thing was "infotainment" and it seemed like the whole industry was insisting we'd all soon see how essential this stuff was. I was disdainful of the idea then, and have only become more so. Cars should have an AM/FM radio receiver, and aside from lights and a horn that's all they need for communications.

That's not the answer you're looking for, but it seems reasonably on-topic here. If you must get a new car, the easiest route to having it not spy on you as much as it can all the time is to make sure it doesn't have a SIM card (or remove the one it does have) and never connect your phone to it in any way except perhaps via a 3.5mm audio jack.

That was much better than what I expected going in knowing only that it was a youtube video about the history of X. Informative and enjoyable.

will finally ship with a DEB package for Debian-based distributions

That's good news for the more specifically Ubuntu-based distributions and their users. I trust that Debian will continue to build its own packages.

A quick look at the documentation seems to indicate that they have not removed or officially deprecated the feature, only made it more complicated to configure it.

It is opt-out

Yeah, you are doing it wrong. As I am guessing you already know, even if you haven't fully admitted it to yourself yet. All telemetry should be opt-in.

That's because you're just far too old, and not down with the zoomers and their extremely flurgid memes. Or possibly you're not a paleontology enjoyer.

When it comes to location tracking and many other things, data retention and use policies are just a useful distraction from the real problem which is that they're able to collect the data at all.

12% over four years? Damn. Somehow I had the impression that there'd been a significant increase.

Netflix revenue is up by roughly 60% in the same four years.

When you phrase it that way, it becomes all the more obvious that it's not really about the porn.

The Irish government wants to pass a law that could see you or your loved ones jailed for possession of memes, cartoons or any content that could be deemed "hateful".

The Bill includes no definition of hate and is wide open to abuse by bad actors. Defend free speech – say no to this legislation, and any legislation of is kind… Anywhere!...

It's too bad you couldn't find a link to somewhere other than x.com. Just going by the headline though, this could lead to great new career opportunities for Irish black market contraband meme dealers.

Make is simple, easy, and effective. It's just "configure" that's full of black magic.

On the other hand, saying that there's way too much javascript in it is objectively factual.

That's not an atheist thing, you're thinking of asantanists.

Sure, it's inevitable. China is so great and prosperous that one day the people of Taiwan will see reason and enthusiastically petition to join it. This will obviously happen some day, so there's no need to do anything but sit back and wait for it, President Xi.

My lawyers will argue that this willful infringement of my rights as the orignal author of the famous 1997 Internet comment "So true" means that you now owe me $4000000 in damages, but I'll settle for one bitcoin.

I for one will be ready to do my civic duty and walk around randomly making stabbing and punching gestures (aimed at friends who've agreed to it) while holding a banana or some other vegetable that might more closely resemble a knife, should such a system ever threaten this part of the world. After all, I have nothing to hide.

Many of those things you're thinking of were declared Somebody Else's Problem by said developers. That's fine, but Wayland was not ready for use by normal end users until somebody else did finish them.

From what I hear most of them actually are finished by now, but they weren't as of a couple years ago when it started becoming commonplace to see declarations that the time to switch to Wayland was Right Now. I tried it out then, and am as a result much less enthusiastic about doing it again now even though it'd be much more likely to go well.

[Discussion] How do you feel about age verification on Porn sites? (lemmings.world)

Porn sites Pornhub, XVideos, and Stripchat face stricter requirements to verify the ages of their users after being officially designated as “Very Large Online Platforms” (VLOPs) under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA)....

Snake oil salesmen never had it so good. Without the layers of abstraction provided by computers, nobody would've believed their magic elixirs would protect children from getting interested in sex until their parents approved of it.

Perhaps we need some more specific word than "privacy" for the right to freedom from automated mass surveillance in public spaces.

As people have said in some of the many, many other threads on this subject, if they really wanted to copy someone else's style of full-screen error message they'd have done much better to go with "Guru Meditation"

The Distro Wars are good actually.?

If all the seemingly pointless discussions about which distro is better comes from attachment to a spesific distro and if a distro is just a way to interract with linux than all the discussion about witch distro is better etc. fundementally comes from a a place of love and appreciation for Linux as an OS....

The only way to avoid having disagreements about which choice of distro is best would be to avoid having any choices.
