leraje, to privacyguides in Filen.io not on the list privacyguides.org
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

A recent PG forum thread is discussing it. PG deemed it not secure enough almost three years ago, based on solid reasoning.

However, that was three years ago and the product has altered dramatically. I just don’t think it’s been resuggested/evaluated since then.

PG forum users (and PG itself) are pretty inconsistent with how they judge stuff. Not trusting one company (Filen) because there were issues three years ago (and are now, as I understand it, fully addressed) but totally trusting another company (Brave browser) despite repeated actions that erode trust is odd behaviour.

I’m a filen user myself, just in the interests of full disclosure.

Been using it for over a year now. The clients were a bit ropey for awhile but they’re great now.

As for trust, only you can really answer that, but they tick all the right boxes for me - I can pay in a way that preserves my privacy, everythings open source and E2EE, they have good policies.

leraje, to asklemmy in Why is there a ICC case of genocide against Israel but not China or Russia?
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Lots of people and countries are claiming Russia is committing genocide and are investigating that possibility.

Several nations and legal institutions have also classed China’s actions against the Uyghur as genocidal.

However, as far as I’m aware neither Russia or China are signed up to the ICC so there’s not much point in using that body to penalise them.

Israel is though and your claim there’s no proof is literally true (in the sense you used the word ‘proof’) but there is plenty of evidence that Israel certainly has genocide very much in the forefront of their minds when members of the Israeli government suggest nuking Gaza, or creating ‘no go’ areas for Palestinians in recognised Palestinian areas that just so happen to be where Palestinian farmers grow and harvest food. Israeli historian of the Holocaust Omer Bartov warned that statements made by top Israeli officials “could easily be construed as indicating a genocidal intent.”

leraje, (edited ) to asklemmy in Do you know any file hosting sites with a good privacy policy?
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’ll recommend (as I always do, being a satisfied customer) Filen - scroll down that page and you’ll see the 10gb free tier.

All you need is a working email - get an anonymous forwarder here or here. All the apps are open source, everything is E2EE, the website doesn’t track or fingerprint you and if you decide to upgrade to a paid acct, they accept Monero.

If anyone seriously judged me for not being on a particular website I’d have to consider their competency at managing life.

Most of the country are change hating small c conservatives who genuinely believe the state knows best and is totally trustworthy. They get their news from the Daily Mail or The Sun because Britain is the best country ever. Its the mindset that ensures we still have a class system, a monarchy and brexit.

leraje, to asklemmy in hey - trying to switch from Chrome to Firefox, what are your recommended extensions and/or quality of life addins, etc?
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

As well as those others have already mentioned, I use:

Linguist is a translation extension that respects your privacy. If you switch to the Bergamot translator it acts in offline mode.

Redirector which allows you to set custom rules so you can redirect (for example) Twitter to Nitter, Instagram to PikUki and also rules to redirect pages that are behind paywalls via 12ft.io (or 1ft.io as 12ft is currently down) .

TamperMonkey a userscript manager. I don’t have loads of userscripts but I do have things like SocialFixer for making FB a bit better, Absolute Enable Right Click and Bandcamp Volume Bar.

“A lot” is the answer to your question. But communism is not one of the things we’re having to deal with at the moment. Quite the opposite in fact.

leraje, to asklemmy in Excluding the obvious ones such as politics, what topics can't you stand listening to people talk about?
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

You’re right, all any of us do, all day, non stop is gripe or insult American culture. Why only the other day, I was in the shop and when I got to the till to pay, all me and the cashier could talk about was America. “That’ll be £44.99 please love and did you see the latest data about gun deaths in America?” God, we’re so insecure.

leraje, to asklemmy in How are "We" to place trust in the fediverse?
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I have quite a lot of faith, but I think the majority of my faith is that whilst you’re right that abuses can happen because some people are cunts, there seems to be a groundswell of willingness to react to that possibility and tackle it.

The relatively recent CSAM attack on .world Communities is a prime example of that. Code was written and systems put into place (not by the lead developers it has to be said but by @db0 and others) to tackle that threat.

leraje, to asklemmy in Is it possible to transfer an account from one Lemmy instance to another?
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

What lasim does is allow you download your account settings. That’s all. So your subscriptions, block lists etc. It doesn’t allow you to transfer posts/comments so yes, your points will be zero on your new account.

If you admin a Community, you can’t transfer that automatically either.

Depending on the make and model of your Android phone, you might be able to use GrapheneOS which will vastly improve your situation. Use it together with privacy respecting apps and you’ll be a long way towards reclaiming your mobile privacy. You can also buy Android phones that are pre-configured with Graphene on them on ebay but you are obviously a running a risk.

Desktop/laptop you will need to move to Linux. Mint is (in my opinion) a very good option if you’re new to Linux as it is privacy respecting and looks/acts in a very Windows type way. Like most Linux distributions, you can even try it without installing it by downloading and burning an ISO to a USB pen/stick drive. Here’s a YT tutorial on doing that (also covers going on to install Mint).

Switch browsers to Firefox and install uBlockOrigin, LibRedirect and Firefox Multi Containers add-ons. Switch to a privacy friendly search engine such as DuckDuckGo, Startpage or a SearX instance.

Migrate your email to an encrypted privacy respecting provider such as Tuta (recently changed their name from Tutanota) and stop using things like OneDrive or Dropbox, instead use a service like ProtonDrive or Filen.

Use a decent VPN like Mullvad on all your devices. This not only protects your ISP from seeing what you’re doing it also means you’re using their DNS, which you can configure to block trackers, adverts and a few other things (at DNS level, you’ll still need uBlockOrigin in your browser). It doesn’t offer as much control as PiHole or AdGuard but it’s a lot less complicated to set up.
