lurch,

I’m pretty sure it’s because less people use it. They make fun of Gentoo taking longer to compile stuff on install/update, but that’s pretty fast nowadays. What really takes up time is making all the choices. I remember hours of selecting obscure kernel options and choosing use flags “what is ncurses? Do i need ncurses? What is sdl? Do i need sdl? …” I mostly use Ubuntu now, because I got no more time for that.

lurch,

I think that’s only true for the programs, not for the JVM/JRE code. The JVM/JRE doesn’t support Wayland without the xwayland compatibility layer. Also, some games use “native” libs that do optimized 3D stuff. Those are special Java classes, not part of the JVM/JRE that interface with C libs, kernels, system calls and hardware directly. Some will stop working without an X window to connect to. Some are long forgotten and won’t be ported.

lurch,

I often switch between Wayland and X. My only concern is java does not yet support Wayland and old native libraries (e.g. 3D stuff for no longer maintained Java games) will probably break, once Java actually switches. Java and some Java games work with the xwayland compatibility layer, for now, but there are glitches sometimes. There are multiple projects porting Java stuff (e.g. Swing) to Wayland. All unofficial and incomplete.

lurch,

I recently worked on a system that had the TERM variable botched and filtered and no nano, just vim. It was all hell. The escape sequences in vim wouldn’t work. I ended up suspendig it with ctrl+z, killing it, then editing the config with fucking ed and sed. That hoster sucks.

lurch,

I’m pretty sure dinit, s6 and runit are faster than systemd (in that order), but it probably depends a bit on your setup. It has better boottime than some others, tho

lurch,

How many did you use though? Is it also the fastest (n=1) ? 😃

lurch, (edited )

The concept is viable. Just needs moar mirrors

lurch,

Also often becomes %20 or + in URLs. Doesn’t really help with readability

lurch,

Better shoot it with a tachyon beam too. Just in case.

lurch,

Is conky still a thing? I used it for that when I used an exclusively passive cooled PC a few years ago. You were able to easily create bar graphs in a config file and even include output of commands.

lurch,

It’s because you don’t want to reinvent the wheel all the time. It sucks doing it. Lots of effort. It’s much better to build on existing stuff and maybe improve it for your needs.

lurch,

Looks like he married Mileena from Mortal Kombat 😀

Broke a partition. Is there any way of saving it?

While I was switching distros, I accidentally broke a partition. I’m almost certain that all the data is there, but it doesn’t have a filesystem (I used ext4). Is there anything I can do to fix it, similar to changing the file extension without changing the contents. PS: It’s a data partition. I was trying to resize it,...

lurch, (edited )

before you change anything it would be good to use dd and save the whole drive to a bigger drive or maybe compress it with gzip while using dd to save it to a slightly smaller one. That takes a very long time, but gives you the ability to start over with your recovery. Only do that if it’s worth to wait several hours.

photorec can also recover some files by looking at the raw data still there, if all else fails.

lurch,

Their language is a lot like memes. Harold; holding cup.

lurch,

I’m not familiar with your package manager, but some have logs detailing what exactly they did in chronological order.

Help, boot doesn't work anymore

I have a laptop eith sata and a nvme drive. I installed a few operating systems and I decided on Mint for Sata. Installed it copied data from Nvme drive since I was using it as primary. I installed Nobara on nvme and it worked flawless until a few moments ago. Reboted and Mint is gone from boot options. Tried to add it but...

lurch,

It is a little program that starts an operating system. It’s very small and basic. It has to be put in a special place on the drive.

dezgo.com/txt2img Prompt: janeway, 19th century communist propaganda poster, looking up, rolling up sleeve

lurch,

Be careful. Make sure the camera and mic is off before cussing and swearing 😅

lurch,

Pretty unsafe, because it makes people prefer big letters, i.e. W

Just order a pizza and eat the warm pinapple from the top 😂
