I waddled onto the beach and stole found a computer to use.

Yep, also the ads don’t get initialized at all if the user buys the ad-free version (going to top all in the Lemmy Boost community should bring up the post about it). It’s relatively cheap and the dev is very active with bugs and requests. The dev is developing for the Fediverse and I’m happy to support that (as well as devs for Sync, Connect, Lemmy, etc.)

I like Boost and paid for ad-Free, but a lot of other clients should work for your needs. While they might not be privacy focussed, many are open source so you can check what is going on.

My preference goes

  • Boost (not FOSS, one time payment to remove ads)
  • Connect (not FOSS, ad free)
  • Eternity (FOSS & ad free)

I uninstalled the other ones and haven’t kept up with them. There may be better ones out there, these are the ones I’m keeping up with

I’m not familiar with the companies mentioned, but have you tried talking to the doctor or the clinic? They may be able to provide you with better guidance, or tell you about other machines that are compatible with your treatment plan. Even if they don’t know about the privacy aspect, that might give you a shorter list to follow up on.

My guess (or hope) is that this is the option that the average person finds convenient, which is why the doctor recommended it. There should be other options that the doctor / clinic knows about, especially because an IOT CPAP machine is a fairly new thing.

Doctors modify treatment plans fairly often, even for things like patient comfort, and bringing this concern to their attention could also change what they recommend to future patients.

Personal thoughts unrelated to your case: This is a growing concern with healthcare technology and I think we need more attention on the harms. ā€œYour insurance company will use it against youā€ is something that most people will understand.

The Irish government wants to pass a law that could see you or your loved ones jailed for possession of memes, cartoons or any content that could be deemed "hateful".

The Bill includes no definition of hate and is wide open to abuse by bad actors. Defend free speech – say no to this legislation, and any legislation of is kind… Anywhere!...

Still, the news link below is probably a better source. I don’t know what ā€˜FreeSpeechIre’ is

There’s a potential for abuse with paying for donations (not saying it should never be done):

  • risk of unsafe blood supplies if people lie about their health history in order to be able to sell their blood
  • ethical concerns around exploiting financially vulnerable people, and turning a life-saving act into another commercial transaction
    • In areas where those vulnerable people aren’t protected by the legal system, there’s also the potential of OTHER people ā€œharvestingā€ and selling the blood

Voluntary and altruistic donations are best, and ideally those values are maintained all the way through the donation process. Hopefully technology continues to improve so that we can support those donations with synthesized alternatives

I believe we’ve had some discussion around this in Canada recently, specifically with donations for plasma. I’m not caught up on it to comment further about it

otter,

I’ve used HTTrack in the past

It worked well for the websites that I tried it on and it’s pretty easy to run. You could give it a go?

Yes I know, a few months ago a post with the exact same title was shared […]

I think reposting after 7+ months is more than ok regardless :)

otter,

I’m not sure about what the backup schedule and stuff has to do with it, but I don’t think it helps much:

  • deleted posts don’t come up in Google searches after a while
  • deleted comments might be counted in the comment count on a post someone navigates to (not sure), so at most the post will initially appear to have more content which might get someone to click

Marginal change at best, it’s probably not worth your time thinking about it

otter,

Isn’t that how the game works? You buy everything from the bank, but at least the bank doesn’t take advantage of that monopoly

otter,

This is an awful situation and I hope the people caught up in this make it out ok.

As respectfully as possible, I’m curious what the service and speeds are like for that price

otter,

To expand, their policies were harmful and we’re still dealing with the consequences of them

  • ā€œtrickle-downā€ policies, which widened income inequality and increased national debt
  • initial inaction during the AIDS crisis made the epidemic and stigma a lot worse. It’s only recently that we’re starting to effectively deal with the illness
  • ā€œWar on Drugsā€ got worse under Reagan, with mass incarceration that disproportionately affected minority communities. Also the ā€œJust Say Noā€ campaign oversimplified the issue instead of addressing the underlying causes. Again, we’re only now starting to shift those policies into something that’s more productive
otter,

Worse than spam, spam at least has a point to it.

Ehh, it’s very clearly labeled for what the purpose is and it’s also easy to block (if someone is using the NEW feed and is affected by the volume of posts).

Some people want the functionality of the bot and a big part of the Fediverse is to bring control of a platform back to the user. Lemmit is providing that functionality the right way

otter,

That sounds really nice

otter,

This is one that came to mind when writing the question šŸ˜„

otter,

Yea a friend really likes it. I think the big stores carry it too but for sure smaller independent ones do in the city

otter,

People’s situations can be different, OP is asking how they can join while minimizing the harms

We don’t have to not join something because the trend is people leaving. Worst case scenario they meet the immediate need and leave alongside whoever they need to connect with

otter,

Great advice, and thank you for answering the question :)

otter,

For those that didn’t click the article

Lodging a complaint at the Binauli police station on Saturday, the woman’s brother said that on Wednesday, she was working at the cauldron when Pramod, Raju and Sandeep allegedly molested and misbehaved with his sister. When she protested, the accused allegedly threw her into the hot cauldron with the intention of killing her, and also hurled ā€œcasteist wordsā€ at her. After this, the three accused fled.

otter,

I think Lemmy has themes too

I try to use the built in darkmode because dark reader got sluggish on some sites. Then I whitelist it on the sites that I need to

otter,

Ah ok, I think they haven’t federated over for me. I’ll keep an eye out for more :)

otter,

it’s just about reading their implementation and providing an alternative implementation that doesn’t copy code…

That sounds difficult though. Didn’t companies have to set up ethics walls to protect against lawsuits for things like that?

otter,

Followup question 2: What are some questions you have that you want to see done by someone? (In case this prompts someone to think of a channel)
