“I want to say, in all seriousness, that a great deal of harm is being done in the modern world by belief in the virtuousness of work, and that the road to happiness and prosperity lies in an organised diminution of work.” - Bertrand Russell, In Praise of Idleness

praise_idleness,

I don’t think I’m something-oriented person in general and often times I quickly learn if someone is asking for an advice or consolation. How should I reply to “I want a real solution for this” when the question is what one should do if it’s 1am and is in hankering for some late night delivery food? How can I give you any input on that?

What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?

I’m still trying to de-Google my life, little by little. I don’t trust Bing for similar reasons. DDG is feeling shady of late. What’s the search engine you all recommend that I can inject into my daily life? Is there perhaps a search engine that is focused on code, or have we just all moved on to AI for searching?...

praise_idleness,

except it’s not for me… I search way, way more than 300/month and $10/m honestly sounds a little unreasonable for a search engine.

praise_idleness,

Wikipedia won’t work. It’ll nag you about how you are not synced to the cloud. Every single time you go back from reading to the library page. Very annoying, but something I think better tolerate than to have yet another telemetry stuff in my life.

praise_idleness,

Because fuck Amazon. /s

I’m joking but additional battery life and shutting off telemetry outweighs Wikipedia lookup, that is of course to me. I also bought with-ads version of it so permanent airplane mode keeps it away. (I know I can kinda get them removed by asking Amazon)

praise_idleness,

Partially, at least for me. Custom fonts won’t work with EPUB. Overall experience is just (marginally) better with converted .azw files.

praise_idleness,

Development wise, It’d be better if it’s required not allowed. Best case scenario, it’s just another redundant if statement.

praise_idleness,

allows a space instead of a T

That’s a bug not a feature

Nice for having sane amount of contrast in white bg.

praise_idleness,

What are you saying? My gitea is my backup!

praise_idleness,

Thank you for letting me know. As you might guess English is not my first language. Always appreciate these inputs.

praise_idleness,

I was aware of forgejo back when I first started hosting Gitea. Didn’t see much of a diff back then so I just went with arguably more popular option at that time.

About few months after it’s mostly just because I’m too lazy of a person.

Proton VPN on Linux looks very different from Windows. How do you select one of their P2P options for faster torrenting?

Pretty much what the title says. I noticed that ProtonVPN Linux has an EXTREMELY limited interface compared to their program on Windows. I also do not appear to have the option to bind qBittorrent to ProtonVPN the same way that I did with MullvadVPN. Has anybody experienced ProtonVPN on Linux and successfully used it for...

praise_idleness,

I recommend you just use gluetun. Way less of a hassle.

praise_idleness, (edited )

I once made a PR changing a = f(b) from a = “” if b == “” else f(b). About six months later still in pending review. I get that people have their own shit but damn.

edit) Sorry. Clarified the code.

praise_idleness,

I’ve missed the f(b) part. Edited.

that's how it works, right? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

Description: A three panel comic often referred to as “No take, only throw.” The first panel is a dog biting a toy with the caption “I want to be good at my hobbies.” The second panel is the dog looking angry and refusing to let go of the toy when a hand reaches out to throw it for the dog again, and it has the caption...

praise_idleness,

I think this a lot too but at the end of the day, it won’t be much fun of a hobby when you don’t even need any practices. Part of having a nice hobby for me is having that moment when all the gradual works pay off.

why is it so difficult select text from posts?

Good morning, English isn’t my first language and it happens quie often that I need to select a good chunk of text to translate it with DeepL, why, in often cases, is impossible but select the title of an article that Lemmy’s bot has summarised? I would appreciate, and I am pretty confident I am not the only one, if the...

praise_idleness,

Anytime anyone asks something like this, I only have one thing to say: Just do it.

praise_idleness,

My Radarr alone uses about 250 MB of RAM idle. Considering Pi Zero has 512MB, I don’t think it’s going to work that well with Radarr alone let alone radarr and sonarr…
