And your solution is to start a community without contributing to it?

Why do christian apologists say the name of the person they're talking to so often?

I’m sure there are other groups that do it too, but I’ve noticed it most often from christian apologists, probably in part case I like listening to debates/discussions with them from atheist youtubers, but I’ve also noticed it talking to christians myself....

It’s a sales technique, when someone calls your name often, your brain is fooled to consider the person closer than they really are, making you a little more likely to buy the product/idea they’re selling. Not effective on its own, but you can be 100% sure it’s not the only technique they’re using on you and all the small bits add up eventually.

Why not raise the request while being nice? You’d be surprised how much spam and scam I remove every day. So I wrote a bot that will do parts of it for me. The bot is not perfect and there will be false positives. If you contact the admins instead of calling them dicks, you might actually improve the Automods in use and prevent another false positive!

Nice! I have tons to post about, I’ve also planned to create something like this.

Because without the proper DRM implementation it’s trivial to rip it. So they’re only letting you rip the low quality version. Which feels really stupid, because people who know how to rip the 4K content exist and are happy to share the results.

baby-journal.app if you have kids and value privacy (disclaimer: I’ve written the app).

Edit: It’s an app for tracking your baby activities, like feeding, sleeping, diaper changes etc. Fully end-to-end encrypted and fully open source and self-hostable, installable on both iOS and Android.

No, use the app if you value privacy and don’t want companies to sell data about your kids just so they can give you better ads.

But you do you, for all I care, people twisting other people’s words are not really someone whose opinion I care about.

Added a description.

Because multiple people can have access to the same data, like two parents, possibly a nanny etc.

I particularly like Cinnamon, it’s very simple and nothing fancy (while still looking great and modern).

The other popular choices include:

  • Gnome
  • KDE (customizable to hell)
  • XFCE (very easy on resources, good for old hardware, or if you like simplistic DE)
  • LXDE (similar to XFCE in the resources department, but looks more modern, IMO)

There are others, but I can’t speak for them as I’ve never tried them. I can’t really describe modern Gnome as well, because the last version I used was 3 and it doesn’t look at all as the same DE, so someone else will have to provide that info.

Start recommending Cinnamon then, it’s the best DE when switching from Windows.

You can get even more fancy and have a boot option for both with specialisations!

<span style="color:#323232;">specialisation.KDE.configuration = {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    services.xserver.displayManager.lightdm.enable = false;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    services.xserver.desktopManager.cinnamon.enable = false;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    services.xserver.displayManager.sddm.enable = true;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    services.xserver.desktopManager.plasma5.enable = true;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  };
</span>

But let’s not pretend NixOS is in any way beginner friendly.

It’s really similar to Windows in how you use it. Switching between Windows 11 and Cinnamon is as seamless as it can be.

There’s almost no configuration or anything necessary, you just install it and it’s great.

rikudou,
@rikudou@lemmings.world avatar

I tried it recently and it was confusing as hell.

rikudou,
@rikudou@lemmings.world avatar

Cinnamon is not the Ubuntu DE, it’s Linux Mint’s.

rikudou,
@rikudou@lemmings.world avatar

After using Mint for quite a few years, I’ve switched to NixOS. Still using Cinnamon, though, that DE won me over.

rikudou,

Switch to NixOS, sometimes it feels like we have every package there is.

I really love the built-in container extension (Multi-Account Containers or something like that). Really good if you need to log in to the same site multiple times or if you don’t want someone track you across sites.

How does Usenet content not immediately get DMCA'd into oblivion?

For instance, say I search for “The Dark Knight” on my Usenet indexer. It returns to me a list of uploads and where to get them via my Usenet provider. I can then download them, stitch them together, and verify that it is, indeed, The Dark Knight. All of this costs only a few dollars a month for me....

Off topic, but is there any tutorial on how to do this Usenet thing? Feel free to contact me on Matrix, it’s on my profile.

Move to Czechia! Amazon’s presence is negligible here, we have our own local alternatives (Alza.cz being the biggest one, but we also have a plethora of e-commerce sites in general).
