I liked it at first, but then I ran into some really weird shit. Re-installing didn’t erase the previous install, programs I installed disappeared after reboot, etc. This might be caused by the jankiness of UEFI, I don’t know. I’m never buying another HP laptop after they pulled this shit with UEFI. It’s given me so many headaches.

can I be a Free Software advocate but still use non-free software??

I’m asking this because one time, while browsing the GNU website, I noticed that some of the members’ emails had “gmail” on them!! And I asked myself how would that be possible?? And I think other members of the FSF had Gmail too. Why? Richard Stallman is against Gmail, so why would those memberse use it?? Would that...

I haven’t. What happens?

seitanic,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I remember when it was considered a mark of professionalism for a web developer to have an email on their own domain. At some point that changed. I think after GMail came out it was so good that everybody switched to that.

How does that work with you’re installing a new system? Do the subvolumes just show up like partitions?

seitanic, (edited )
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

So, it doesn’t sound like it would be useful for me, since the reason why I have separate partitions in the first place is so that I can re-install a distro or install a new distro without having to back up /home first.

What’s the good urbanist response to homelessness?

seitanic, (edited )
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Wouldn’t rm -rf / eat /home, too? That doesn’t get backed up in a snapshot…

seitanic,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Try telling that to…every software company ever.

Well, yes and no. The Democrat Party is structured to prevent takeovers like what happened to the GOP (e.g. super-delegates). I think it is moving to the left, but glacially slowly. 20 years ago, somebody like Bernie would have been a joke. Now, he’s a viable contender. Maybe in another 50 or 60 years, they’ll be where European leftist parties are now.

LOL. You must’ve been watching a different Dark than the one I did.

Time travel is a difficult trope to do well, because there is so much potential for paradoxes and other confusion. I always find myself going “So, if they could travel through time, couldn’t they just do X?”

In Dark, it started with a good premise, but the last season was a total wreck. It felt slapped together, like they had to come up with an ending in a hurry.

For external SSD?

seitanic,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

That would be awesome. I hate having to find a cable to plug my SSD into. If it was simply a card that could be inserted into a slot, that would be so much easier.

They said that they know it’s a conspiracy, which means they believe that it’s happening.

Windows 11 may be the king of operating systems

In what world? I’ve just started using it at work, and I swear the other day it tried to sell me an XBox controller. Not like I was on the Web and an ad popped up, no. It was part of the operating system!

Can you imagine going back in time 10 years and telling somebody “In the future, Microsoft is going to put pop-up ads in Windows.” People would think you were crazy!

seitanic,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

To be fair, I’ve never used pure Arch. The Arch derivatives I’ve used are Manjaro and Garuda.

@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I agree with most of that, but I think you’re reading a lot into two sentences.

This type of thinking is exactly what the Israeli lobby wants. If you can conflate any criticism of Israel with antisemitism, then you can silence critics and make other people afraid to speak up. (Of course, some criticism of Israel is antisemitic, but it’s dangerous to start from that assumption.)

seitanic,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I said “not a conspiracy theory”. Big difference.

I thought it was a texture thing. Otherwise, you could just add some salt to your sauce.

which Israel admitted to have propped up and wanted to become the prominent Palestinian group

So, basically what Hillary did with Trump? Oh, that’s rich!

The price of convenience is always high.

Why? I do things that are inconvenient all the time. It’s inconvenient that I have to go to work 5 times a week in order to make money. It’s inconvenient that I have to get vaccinated so that my immune system is stronger. It’s inconvenient to have to meditate for 20 minutes a day to make my thoughts less scattered. And so on.

seitanic,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I’m embarrassed to say that it never occurred to me that I could turn it off! Now that it’s off I wonder if anyting changes. It seems like it’s wrong more often than it’s right, but that could jus be confirmation bias.

seitanic,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I wouldn’t call that necessarily passing an ethics test. You could’ve wanted to say something, but were too lazy.

Not doing something wrong is different from doing something right.

I’m no historian, but I have a feeling there isn’t a lot of scholarship on Nazi bakers.
