I was often in charge of lighting the grill when I lived at home with my parents, we used a hot air gun to light the grill, and it worked really well, we never used lighter fluid, just hot air, and during the process you easily see flames comming up from the burning coal.
Failing that, I used to be an active member of a herritage railroad with steam trains, looking into the firebox of a steam enging you clearly see the coals burning.
Hello! I recently set up my first home server, and would like to set up qbittorrent on it. I tried using protonVPN, which is what I use on desktop, but got rate limited because torrenting on the free plan is not allowed. What do you think of hide.me vpn? it has a CLI linux version, I think I can install it inside the docker...
I am mostly a windows user these days, but fifteen years ago I ran Linux as my main OS.
I ran Ubuntu on a Dell Latitude E5400, at first I ran Gnome 2 or KDE 4 as my DE, but got annoyed with how much vertical space they used, so I learned how to use Fluxbox.
Fluxbox is great, a small stacking WM, that is easy to configure and worked like I wanted it.
I still set it up to run gnome-settings-daemon as I had no idea on how to do apply a GTK theme without it.
The really annoying part of running fluxbox as a WM was that I never figured out how to shut down the computer from a menu, it allways complained about me not having permissions to shut down the computer, so I used to do a log off and before the GDM login screen loaded I could press the power button on the laptop and have it shutdown the computer gracefully, timing was key, but it worked.
Running plastic cutting boards in the dishwasher is less weird to me, but in general it is a weird concept to me, it was just never done at home or at any place I did the dishes.
Asymetrical encryption solves this, here is my attempt to do an ELI5:
Adam want’s to send a chat message to Ben, but want to do it securely, so they use a special program on their computers.
When the Adam’s program first reaches out to Ben’s computer, it asks for an unlocked padlock, this is a padlock that can only be unlocked by Ben’s program.
Adam’s program takes the padlock and crafts a new special series of padlocks that only Adam’s program can unlock, which it put’s in a box and locks it with Ben’s padlock.
The box is sent to Ben’s program, the program unlocks the box and creates it’s own special series of padlocks that only Ben’s program can unlock, put them in a box and locks it with Adam’s padlocks.
The box is then sent to Adam’s program, and is unlocked.
This now means that Adam’s program can put messages to Ben in a box, lock the box with one of Ben’s special padlocks and send it on it’s way knowing that only Ben can unlock the box and read the message.
Likewise, Ben can also send messages in boxes locked with Adam’s padlocks and know that only Adam can unlock them and read the message.
Added to this is the fact that messages from Ben can be verified as having used the special padlocks Adam sent to Ben, as else Adam’s special key wouldn’t fit the padlocks given to Ben.
In reality the padlocks are keys to lock a message, and the above text describe a secure key exchange.
Eating pizza, nothing can ever compete with a nice glass of Trocadero, it just feels right.
At cristmas? Coca Cola? Absolutely not! Give me Zeunerts Julmust every time!
Drinking soft drink with friends and watching a movie, give me an Indian Tonic with a lemon slice, lasts long and is very tasty.
Have some dark rum (I have plenty) and want a quick drink with a good mixer, Fanta used to be great, but they have added sweeteners in addition to sugar, so they taste like crap now, so I tend to look for som itallian orange soda, it is works well.
Eating a bruger, Coca Cola is still great!
Having a quiet evening by the computer? Just stick to mineral water.
I am expecting Sprite to get the sweetener treatment as well, but for now it makes a great drink to mix it with some local distilled raspberry liquor I have, tastes like Sprite, but with a really nice aftertaste of Raspberries
Please go to next week and bring me the winning lottery numbers, then please go to next year and bring me a newspaper with the stock market records, then go ten years in the future and bring me a map of what areas are being developed for housing.
I’m sure there are other groups that do it too, but I’ve noticed it most often from christian apologists, probably in part case I like listening to debates/discussions with them from atheist youtubers, but I’ve also noticed it talking to christians myself....
I’ve added my favorite YouTube channels in the comments below. (Feel free to check them out!) But, my preferences aside, what YouTube channel(s) do you want more people to see?
I have several excellent YT channels to recommend, in alphabetical order:
Accursed Farms - The source of the “Freeman’s mind” series, Ross also makes excellent videos about other games.
Alasdair Becket-King - ABK is a comedian who makes short but really funny videos.
Anders Enger Jensen - A Norwegian musician making awesome synth songs.
Barely Sociable - Interesting videos about odd topics, focuses on “dark” stuff, has a good voice.
Brick Experiment Channel - Remote controlled submarine made out of Lego and other Lego stuff, need I say more?
Calum - A guy from Scotland making amazing videos about stuff like: Rescue buoys from WWII, WV Beetles at the south pole, Flying homes of the past, Jerry Cans, Secret WWII Bunkers, and much more. This is awesome.
Code Bullet - Chaotic AI programing, very fun and cool to see.
DankPods - Started with iPod Repair videos, reviews random crappy MP3 players, has insane amplifier to blow up headphones, mostly talks about weird nuggets of technology. Well worth a look.
James Channel - Do you want a portable Super Nintendo, but are worried about not breaking it? DankPods oldmate will show you how to do it with some random components, duct tape and hot glue.
Jet Lag: The Game - A game show where the planet is the board, they have played connect 4 across the US, Raced around the world, played Tag across Europe, made New Zeeland into a board game, played CTF across Japan, and more, really good!
Mustard - Exellent transportation documentaries, with great CGI.
Paper Skies - Son of a Soviet air force pilot talking about how life and work in the Soviet air force was.
Paper Will - Documentaries about “dark” topics like “The ugly side of kids TV”, “Entertainment made by cults”, “Games about 9/11”, really interesting stuff!
Peter Dibble - Want to learn about the bus running on the wires of a ski lift system? You can here! You can also learn about that time that Amtrack brought a Swedish and a German high speed train across the US for tests in the 90s.
Ringway Manchester - Videos about two way radios, amateur radio and other things on the airwaves.
Side Note - North Korean cruises? Hitler’s Birthday? US presidential yachts? An ice block in Sahara? Mysterious Egypt/Israel flights? A floatibg hotel in North Koera? What do all of these topics have in common? They all have videos on the Side Note channel.
There are a myriad of news articles here on Lemmy that display the abhorrent influence billionaires have on our society (especially the US, where I reside). I consistently read comments where the posters appear hopeless and despondent of the situation, while others jokingly refer to the guillotine....
To help our poor billionaires I will take one for the team and help them reduce their burden, for a small administrative fee, I will take ownership of 10% of their fortune, I’d imagine there are several other people who gladly would agree to help in slmilar ways.
I’d obvously vet my clients based on their fortune:
A bilionaire with a fortune up to 9 billion, then I’d manage to deal with 10%
But at 10 billions to 99 billions, I could only manage to deal with 1%
Also, I would disperse the money, sharing it with the world, while at the same time gathering cameras, computers, and other things I enjoy, thus ensuring that the wealth is not just collected, but actively used and taxes are paid.
Then as the funds I have been tasked with reducing are gone, I am able to accept a new client for this most noble of task.
My Leon has been a really good car for me, I bought it used, with 15000km run on it, and now at 35000km this is the first big issue I have had.
As for infotainment issues, I have sort of had issues with mine, the main infotainment unit works fine, but the carplay link to my iPhone do get messed up from time to time, especially if it is running wirelessly.
I think it had more to do with radio interference and how the Carplay protocol is implemented rather than the infotainment in the car.
I have however found an external factor that has messed with my car’s built in navigation system, Russia spoofing GPS signals, I drove around the northern suburbs of Stockholm, and my car’s map thought I was driving in the southern suburbs and costantly moved my marker all over the place, my phone was fine though at the same time…
I bought my first car last summer at 35, this is the first longer trip I’ll do in it (apart from looking at the northern most bus stop in SL’s area and also looking at Dannemora Gruva), I just had breakfast and am bow heading out in the beautiful weather
I have a 2021 Seat Leon PHEV hatchback, bought it last year, and today was the first major issue…
After visiting Eskilstuna, I stopped by Arlanda on my way back to see if I could take some good photos, I had my camera and locked the car, tried to get a few shots, but nothing interesting happened, then 10 min later, when I wanted to leave, the car would not unlock the doors…
I called for a mechanic, ha managed to get the driver’s side door open, pop the bonnet and with a battery booster, got me going again.
I suspect an old battery, and I will call a workshop on monday to get it checked out.
A town about 2h driving west of Stockholm in Sweden, they have a cool museum with stationary steam engines from their industrial history, there is another museum showing off more of it as well, including some swords, guns and rifles made in the town.
