We did it, exxitors!

Ertebolle, in Fidelity has cut Reddit valuation to $5.5B from $10B

I still have 14,000 free coins in my account - maybe soon the valuation will drop low enough that I can buy the company with them, like in that Star Trek TNG episode where Data wins so much money that he buys the casino.

I doubt it is related to migration. It is too soon to have any data on that affect and by numbers it is not much of affect either. The only cost factor of migration that can be done before next quarter release would be increased costs in future dur to moderation, but even that would be very subjective. This is probably due to increased interest rate scenario as feds have said they will bring inflation to 2% so there will be more increase. Hence lowering of cost and spend by companies on advertising and marketing.

shoelace,

It's not related to the migration. The article said the lower valuation is as of May 31, before all the backlash on reddit began.

explodingkitchen, in Instead of deleting your Reddit account, consider using chatgpt to make comments instead

lolnope. I'm not that hung up on my ex. Bitch about him to my friends over a beer? Sure. Stalk him and trash his car? That shit's for losers.

cyborganism, in They stole the internet from the people and we have to take it back

Absolutely.

The internet has become basically a handful of sites on which people share these sites' publications It's become some kind of meta feedback loop.

I heard allegations that reddit was restoring deleted content to try and maintain the value of the site.

So far I just know it as hearsay though.

I'm still new to Lemmy. Is there a link to this power delete suite? I don't see one in the post.

I might as well try to delete my content. I don't plan on going back to Reddit as anything other than anonymous.

Welcome to the fediverse friend. Might take a week or two to figure out, and the bugs are still being sorted, but boy is it a nice change of scenery. And once the apps come it'll feel like home again.

cyborganism, in Reddit is running out of patience with protesting moderators

And I'm running out of patience with these companies who think they own the internet and act like they can do whatever they want.

I've already stopped using Facebook and Twitter, and frankly I don't care about leaving Reddit. It had become such a toxic place anyway.

I feel that because KBin/Lemmy is new, people tend to be more positive and optimistic and helpful.

What happens when they're not?

McBinary, (edited )
@McBinary@kbin.social avatar

Then you block them. Individually at first. If there is a whole instance of them, like exploding-heads or lemmygrad, then you nuke their whole instance and move on.

richardazia, in They stole the internet from the people and we have to take it back

With Kbin, Calckey, Mastodon, lemmy, Hugo and more we can. We don't need to be trapped within the social media giants, especially after what happened to Instagram, Twitter, and now Reddit. Now is the time when we need to revert to the habit of using community websites, rather than social media giants.

kdegeek,

I am absolutely loving Calckey. I was on Mastodon before, and wasn't wild about its UI, but Calckey is SO PRETTY

I know hugo as a static site generator. Is there also a fediverse project by that name?

ArugulaZ,

CalcKey sounds like accounting software. That's the next big thing in microblogging, though?

"ad blocks you back youtube" what's this one about? I must have missed it?

Addv4,

Youtube is trying to ban ad blockers. Which is dumb, but ya know, profit?

Otome-chan,

oh yikes. if youtube starts preventing me from watching videos I'll probably start using an alternative platform. Though I have a pretty rigorous adblock setup on my browser, and I haven't seen an ad in probably years lol. Sponsorblock is also great.

Raji_Lev,
@Raji_Lev@kbin.social avatar

Dunno, I haven't seen anything pop up in Firefox running uBlock Origin, on either desktop or mobile (hint hint)
