Zellith, in I don’t understand people who say they can’t figure out Lemmy or KBin

Been here a week. Still no idea what the words you just said mean. Lemmy wont become super popular unless it becomes super simplified so even a caveman could do it.

EnglishMobster,
@EnglishMobster@kbin.social avatar

Kbin doesn't have as much of this because it's simplified quite a bit. It's one reason why I recommend Kbin to newbies, because it gives you a giant "sign up" button immediately.

But to answer your question:

  • Instance: a server that hosts everything. You and I are on Kbin.social, which is an instance. Another Kbin instance is fedia.io. Kbin has relatively few instances. Lemmy has oodles (Lemmy.world, Lemmy.ml, sh.itjust.works, etc.). Lemmy actively encourages people to spread out over many instances.
  • Magazine/Community: If you're on Kbin, I'd hope you know what a Magazine is. Lemmy calls them Communities. Reddit called them Subreddits. They're all basically the same - buckets for people to make posts about certain topics.
PangolinPaladin,
@PangolinPaladin@social.fossware.space avatar

I think I understand the terms you have explained, but I am still a little confused on viewing by “all”, when I view “all” am I seeing posts from every instance that is federated with the one I’m on or only the communities/magazines that users on my instance have visited before?

EnglishMobster,
@EnglishMobster@kbin.social avatar

"All" shows every community/magazine that at least one person on your instance has subscribed to.

The different sort options sort then differently, of course.

PangolinPaladin,
@PangolinPaladin@social.fossware.space avatar

I see, thank you! This makes the choice of instance when signing up more significant than I thought.

EnglishMobster,
@EnglishMobster@kbin.social avatar

Yep, places with more people will have a wider range of communities in their "all" feed.

That said, the barrier to making an account isn't too high. My first account was on Lemmy.ml back in 2020, shortly after Lemmy was created (I never stuck around and left pretty quickly).

Last month I realized I don't trust Lemmy.ml, so I joined Beehaw.org.

Then I thought Beehaw.org was a little overzealous at times, so I came here to Kbin.social.

I've largely stuck to Kbin because I really like how it looks and feels, but I did make accounts on Lemmy.world, fedia.io, and sh.itjust.works as backups in case Kbin goes down.

MrGG,

Sync is an app that not only would I argue was the best Reddit third-party app, but one of the best Android apps in general. And it was made by one guy!

Sorry, Sync was an app. 😭

This should be a lesson to all remaining mods to stop putting their effort into that site. Reddit doesn’t care about who helped build it. They only care about making money for themselves.

What a shitty way to remove you. Completely uncalled for.

Mods should quit moderating altogether IMO, more than 20 thousands participated in the protest, there's no way they could replace them all in a reasonable time-frame, it would be a much better chaos than the blackout.

@hiyaaaaa23 Now its your turn, Elon. Can you integrate NFTs and Crypto Currency into Twitter? The battle continues...

curiosityLynx,

If you actually wanted to tag the person, you need to include the instance they're on. In your case I'd have to write @thingsiplay@kbin.social

thingsiplay, (edited )
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@curiosityLynx The name is written out fully automatically when I click "Add comment"; kbin, the instance where I am, will put full identifier automatically. But on posting it only shows the "id name" without "instance part", but links to the account. Like in this situation with your name. My guess is, the person is still tagged correctly and only the HTML link name is shown in the browser.

I just wish it would link to the actual post or reply directly, instead the person. With the ability to preview on mouse hover (just like how it works on person accounts, at least for me on the desktop browser). This would make discussions more clear.

Ferk,
@Ferk@kbin.social avatar

Yes, I think it's an issue from kglitch.social, when seeing your comment (or other mentions) from there it does not show it as a link:

https://kglitch.social/m/RedditMigration@kbin.social/t/11190/I-just-wanted-to-leave-this-here#entry-comment-78785

ReiWasHere,
@ReiWasHere@kbin.social avatar

@Ferk

it might be the /kbin core, not your site you're on.

if you mention someone at your instance here i also prob would see a "full url" (as long it's not the same instance we are on, yes even if it's kbin based)

linking magazines is even more broken.

if i link a kbin social magazine, its not even gonna show, if i do mention a magazine on another instance here on kbin.social it does shorten and link to it, while the ppl over there just see the "full url" of my mention vice versa :,D

thingsiplay,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@Ferk Interesting. I have checked the link from you, to see it from their perspective. And sure enough that won't show me a link too, BUT... The guy from kglitch.social has a link. What I think happening is following: Because I respond to the guy in the same instance kbin.social, it won't put the entire name. I know this from Mastodon, where if we are in the same instance, I don't need to put the instance id to tag someone. And because the guy from kglitch is not in the same instance, it will automatically create a full id reference, which every instance render as a link.

Hopefully I could explain what I think is happening. Maybe it is not an issue with kglitch itself, but how Kbin works.

curiosityLynx,

That actually makes sense.

It's rumored that Reddit is about to launch a new "creator program" that will pay Redditors for high-karma activity on the site. This change is probably meant to accommodate this new feature.

Chozo,

how could they even have the cashflow to support that?

I'm guessing new deals with advertisers. These changes will incentivize more neutral, advertiser-friendly comments on their platform. I imagine that's going to make them more lucrative to advertisers going forward, so that their ads are shown next to harmless memes instead of bad-faith political arguments in cat pic subreddits.

brainfreeze, in Reddit exodus - Using Lemmy from my existing Mastodon
@brainfreeze@kbin.social avatar

@Arotrios had a really good post about some of the stuff you can do with kbin to follow other communities or even entire instances across the fediverse.

SubsAndDubs,

Hmm that link seems to be broken for me.

brainfreeze,
@brainfreeze@kbin.social avatar

Still works for me. You can search by the post title:

YSK that Kbin can subscribe not only to magazines and communities, but entire instances.

It was on m/kbinMeta

SubsAndDubs,

I’m on lemmy.world, do you know if Lemmy has the same functionality? Still new to this

brainfreeze,
@brainfreeze@kbin.social avatar

Same here!

I don't think it's exactly the same on lemmy -- you can't seem to sub to an entire instance, for example -- but there's at least some similar capability.

For instance, I'm on kbin right now, so when I click your user name I go to a kbin version of your lemmy.world profile page: https://kbin.social/u/@SubsAndDubs@lemmy.world. It has the option to block or follow you, which should show your posts in my kbin feed. As far as I know, Lemmy can't do the same with kbin users. I haven't found a way to follow other lemmy users either, except on kbin.

But on lemmy you can sub to lemmy or kbin communities, even if they're on other instances. On lemmy.world, RedditMigration has the address https://lemmy.world/c/RedditMigration@kbin.social. So it seems to be a community there that just pulls in from the original at https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration@kbin.social. (No idea why it's like this.)

So if your main instances was, say, beehaw.org, you would search for !RedditMigration and you'd see that community pop up in the results. You can subscribe to it that way and it would be in your subs list on beehaw. The same should be true of kbin magazines/communities.

It looks like each community on lemmy has their address posted next to the subscription box, so you can paste it into your lemmy.world search and sub to anything you want regardless which instance it's on.

In theory this is going to work (maybe?) with other fedi services like Mastodon, but I suspect the admins and devs have to build a lot of things, so it may not be around for awhile.

SubsAndDubs,

Thanks very much for your informative reply. Yeah I’m hoping that lemmy adds the functionality to follow people, though I might sign up to Kbin and see how that side fairs out for me. Kbin does seem to have slightly better fediverse integration.

brainfreeze,
@brainfreeze@kbin.social avatar

What i've noticed is that each one is lacking something. I kind of like the layout of lemmy a bit more, but it doesn't have the same capability of following people or communities from all over, and I don't think you can follow users at all like in kbin and Mastodon. But kbin doesn't have any way that I can find to save posts, which is something use a lot.

SubsAndDubs,

Oh that’s interesting as in Lemmy you can save posts and comments. I can across an app called fedilab which integrates Mastodon, pixelfed, and a couple other fediverse…communities/instances?, Not sure what they’re known as, across one account. If that app manages to integrate Lemmy/Kbin it would a game changer for me.

Is Kbin just a web app or do you know if there are any Android apps that access Kbin?

brainfreeze,
@brainfreeze@kbin.social avatar

I don't think there's an app-app yet. I've read on here that kbin is fairly new, while lemmy has been around a lot longer.
