Run a VPN on the device so it's harder to figure out where it connects to the Internet. Leave it at work or home or, if you must travel with it, keep it turned off.

See if you can friend or follow people in foreign countries and who don't speak English.

brettvitaz, (edited ) in What could my upstairs neighbor possibly be doing to make this much noise?

This is the exact thing I’m dealing with. I’m hopeful the HOA will help put an end to it. We’ve had mediation with them and they think it’s totally normal to stomp around at 2:30 am.

Am I the first one to say Popeye except for the wikipedia? Crazy!

DirigibleProtein, in Edit: (What do you call this dish?)

A plate? If it’s a bit deeper it could be a bowl.

IOII19, (edited ) in Costumer Service/Delivery/Whatnot persons, how can I make your life easier?

When trying clothes on in clothing stores, it’s so nice when people don’t leave the stuff they tried on an inside out ball on the floor. Please hang the stuff that was hanging and since no one knows how to fold just side fold things that don’t have a hanger. It’s not difficult, but apparently for some it is akin to rocket fucking science

If you can’t avoid being tracked, add a tons of extra data every chance you get. Have fun with it. Your goal is to get company to write new policies just for you.

TeckFire, in What system or method do you use for your monthly budget or personal finance?

My wife and I have a pretty simple method. First, we each have our own bank accounts with our own spending money. Then, we have a joint account that we use for bills. Finally, we have a separate bank that we use for groceries and gas.

With these allocated separately, we can each have our own spending money, and have enough in every other account to take care of what we need. The paycheck just gets split between these in different direct deposit amounts.

The most important thing is to understand your costs, plan them out, and be aware of what comes out and when. Then, you just follow that plan. The biggest part is making sure you know that you can only spend exactly that much on yourself, which is where our individual accounts come in handy. Whatever we want to buy, we can, because we know safely that our needs are taken care of.

Since we have our math to allow more money in than money out, each account (minus our spending ones) accrue their own savings, and can be transferred between at any time. Overall, it works for us.

My wife introduced it to me as something her family called a “Hollywood egg” I guess due to fact you feel so glamorous eating one.

satanmat, in Tips on making your data less sellable?

What kind of stuff are you putting on there?

If they are making you have it for contact purposes, don’t put anything extra on there. Leave it as the most bare and basic for contact only. No personal interaction at all.

And as everyone else is saying you can’t make in unsalable. But don’t give them anything

Unfortunately it’s not just not posting on Facebook. Facebook uses tracking pixels and those little like and share buttons on sites to track you outside of Facebook domains (that’s why porn videos have them. No one is sharing porn on Facebook and Meta doesn’t expect them to; they just buy the tracking). As much as possible separate your devices and networks from any device that accesses Facebook, and disable cookies and trackers using an ad blocker and privacy-respecting browser all over. You’d be amazed at how adept Facebook and others are at linking you across devices and networks.

Xariphon, in Short(er) people of Lemmy--what are some lifehacks you figured out that've helped you out?

For people in need of a desk or table...

I'm an amateur woodworker and I could use the practice transitioning to furniture making. If you don't mind covering materials and shipping (from New York to you), feel free to message me and we can work something out. I'm not looking to make a killing here, but getting some practice while helping somebody out would be nice.

XenoWarden, (edited )

I’m not sure how to DM people on my Lemmy client Thunder but I might be interested depending on the deets! I’m located in Florida.

Xariphon,

Hmm. I don't know either. Maybe I need an account on your instance? I'm posting from kbin anyway so heck if I know.

XenoWarden,

Tried a different client (Voyager) that did seem to have the ability to DM, so we’ll see if that works!

Xariphon,

I don't seen anything on my end.

fmstrat, in Is CCleaner still people's preferred computer cleaning app?

Let me dig up that Ubuntu ISO link right quick…

Mr_Blott,

Oh do shut up

magnetosphere, in People who post content because it makes you angry : why do you help it spread?

Years ago, a coworker told me about someone famous who had died that morning. I don’t remember who, only that it was someone who I had heard good things about, was well liked, and seemed like a nice person.

I was actually sad to hear about it. I probably would have gone weeks without hearing about their death otherwise, and it wouldn’t have bothered me as much. Instead, my morning was ruined by someone who just wanted to be the first to tell people, and treated the news like it was merely another piece of trivia.

I decided right then and there not to share bad news without a reason. Sometimes people need to hear unpleasant things, of course, and I don’t dodge that responsibility. There’s no reason to pointlessly spread negativity, though, especially when the information isn’t particularly essential to anyone.

I don’t know why I typed that. It’s basically the exact opposite of what you asked. Uh… sorry!

Thanks, I need to spend time thinking about this. I’m drawn to discussing contentious topics because it’s interesting. I worry that without discussing these things which interest me that I won’t have a lot to say.

garbagebagel,

This made me think of that Curb episode where Larry’s mom (I think) dies and his dad just didn’t tell him because he didn’t want to ruin his trip to New York.

angrymouse,

I dont see as the opposite, but the opposite, it is a very insteresting story and a way to see this kind of situation that OP is talking about. Thanks for sharing.

pyrflie, (edited ) in Edit: (What do you call this dish?)

Egg in the hole.

But a poorly cooked one since it looks like the egg is cooked through without having toasted the bread. Ideally the egg yolk will be runny and the bread toasted on both sides. It’s also missing the interior ‘dipper’ toasted separately. Looks like good bread though.
