PlutoniumAcid, in What is a nifty little feature modern gadgets have lost?
@PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world avatar

My trusty old Psion Series 5 was an awesome pocket computer that would run for three weeks on two AA batteries!

It also had a large touch screen and a clever physical keyboard that was just large enough for ten-finger typing.

I used it for 15 years, it was amazing and no smartphone ever came close.

I too miss the LED notification light. If you have an amoled display, check this out:

barcaxavi,

That’s really cool, thanks!

Palindromes, in What has been the best thing that has happened to you so far?

I started kayaking! It’s been a lot of fun and it’s been great to explore new places in my area that I’ve lived at for over 30 years!

TonyTonyChopper, in What if reddit joins race of services joing fediverse?
@TonyTonyChopper@mander.xyz avatar

They explicitly removed the ability to access their content through their API to push first party frontends. This would never happen

cosmicrookie, (edited )
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Could they pull fediverce content into reddit though?

Stern,
@Stern@lemmy.world avatar

I suppose they could scrape content like some bots do on lemmy, but why bother.

SatansMaggotyCumFart,

Could you imagine the loop of Reddit stuff being scraped to Lemmy and back again?

anothermember, in Mayo, mustard or ketchup?

Depends what it’s on, they’re completely non-interchangeable.

  1. Going to collage and experiencing the wide gamut of experiences there.
  2. Meeting my wife and her saying yes to going on a date with me my last year of college.
  3. Living in a foreign country (Japan) for 3 years for work with my wife and having 2 kids while I was there.
  4. Having kids (3 in total)
  5. Designing and building our own house.

deadcatbounce, (edited ) in How do you think social media platforms should work?
@deadcatbounce@reddthat.com avatar

Advertising revenue should at least pay a proportion of the cost of getting sausage lips.

Secondly, interacting with social media should be conducted using rotary dial phones. That’ll fcuk every generation which is overly keen on using it.

In smartphones

  1. Replaceable batteries
  2. Headphone jack
  3. Software unlocked parts
  4. Root-able phones

In PCs

  1. No-RGB components that only prioritise performance
  2. No nonsense PC cases that are just a black box with awesome airflow
  3. GPUs that don’t need a mortgage
LazerFX,

I’m with you on the black towers. Still rocking an Antec P120 on my wife’s PC - “the monolith” it got nicknamed.

EurekaStockade,

Check out Silverstone cases, they have a few that are understated, and make them in a variety of form factors if you wanted to do, say, a custom NAS, server or media center build.

fallingcats,

You can easily root any pixel phone. You can also easily by PC parts without any RGB, and they are usually cheaper.

nte,

All of that exists, don’t by an iPhone and don’t buy the latest and greatest nvidia graphics card. Buy a used 3060 for example. I am wirting this from a rooted zenfone 8, with notification light, headphone jack and on the second battery. Get a fairphone if you want to flip them in the fly.

kamen, (edited )

For the smartphones I mostly agree. Even Pixels, although easily unlockable and rootable, make you jump through hoops if you want to use things like banking.

For PCs, there are still options available. Fractal have cases with no RGB and even metal side panels (as opposed to tempered glass ones) if that’s your thing. Noctua and be quiet! still make non-RGB fans and coolers.

MilitantAtheist,

Fractal does black boxes and some more fancy looking ones

violetraven,
@violetraven@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I would trade in the black PC case for beige. Give me that 90s aesthetic again.

Pluckerpluck,

Fractal cases are basically black boxes with decent airflow designed to be quiet.

Rentlar,

For the smartphone, what do you mean by software unlocked parts? For the rest I’m in total agreement.

The high end graphics card market really needs more clean RGB free stuff. My 3090’s lights didn’t turn on despite it functioning just fine so maybe that counts :) ?

As for case I know you had plenty of answers already, but I recently got a Corsair 4000D my latest build it’s sleek and has no inbuilt RGB lighting.

osbo9991,

By unlocked parts, they may be referring to how Apple serializes parts in iPhones so that you are forced to pay for repair at the Apple store. Part serialization means that if you took two real iPhones apart, swapped every component with each other, and tried to use the phone, certain features just stop working… Here is a demo from Hugh Jeffreys, who has demonstrated this problem with many recent iPhone models: youtu.be/dbRKQ0OjQeE

I just hope android devices never adopt this anti-feature like has happened many times in the past with Apple’s anti consumer design choices.

Rentlar,

Damn that’s such unnecessary DRM, I think it should be illegal to serialize parts like that for a mass produced product.

areyouevenreal,

Plenty of phones are still rootable. Fairphones have replaceable batteries.

thrawn, in What if reddit joins race of services joing fediverse?

I think it’d be great to be able to see Reddit content if I wanted, and ignore it if not. I left because I’m a mobile user, not because I dislike Reddit content. It would also significantly lower the barrier of entry to Lemmy, so they’ll never do it.

OsrsNeedsF2P, in What has been the best thing that has happened to you so far?

Said screw it and moved to Korea.

I was incredibly lucky and met a Korean in school, so I was able to get all the info I needed about what to expect. I’ve been here 3 years now, sure I miss my family and friends but I’ve been granted a new life.

To anyone who thinks their life sucks: move. Everyone has an excuse, but at the end of the day you’ll either stay where you are until you die, or you’ll go somewhere new.

thorbot,

It’s not so easy to just “move” like you say. Most people can’t afford to uproot their lives and start somewhere else. Im happy for you but don’t assume others can just “move” if things are bad for them.

OsrsNeedsF2P, (edited )

I made this comment explicitly because people say it’s not easy to just “move”. The truth is… Yea, of course it’s hard. But unless you have a health condition that requires weekly hospital attendance, it’s a matter of how much you want it

thorbot,

That’s not true at all. Many are living paycheck to paycheck and can’t afford the price of a major change like this. “It’s a matter of how much you want it” is a brain dead reply. There are people who literally cant afford to live where they are now.

luves2spooge,

Teaching jobs will pay for your flight and accommodation (provided you have a degree) . I came to Korea with just enough cash to survive for a month. It’s actually not expensive.

thorbot,

You are making so many assumptions it’s insane. Not everybody has a degree in teaching. Just stop

luves2spooge,

You don’t need a degree in teaching. Any degree is enough to meet the visa requirements. If you’re single and have no pets it is actually pretty easy.

thorbot,

It must be nice to come from a world where you can just get any degree you want and then have the ability to move whenever you want and find any job in a new country and have the money to float the whole process.

wlsnt,

Bro you are the insane one here, they were just motivating people, no need to be so toxic

hereforthepopcorn,

Another option would be to become a volunteer and join an organisation that does volunteering work abroad. There are possibilities for them sponsoring your flights, accommodation, and meals.

luves2spooge,

I’ve been in Korea for coming up on 14 years. It’s really a great place to live.

jennwiththesea, in Mayo, mustard or ketchup?
@jennwiththesea@lemmy.world avatar

Mustard. It’s more versatile. Besides the obvious condiment uses, it’s also a useful ingredient in cooking, can alleviate muscle cramps (eaten), helps with bee or wasp stings (topical), and can be used as a dye.
