This is spinal tap, Metallica’s some kind of monster or This is Anvil.

It’s the same film, one is a mocumentary, the other is an unintentional comedy because no one is self aware, and the other is a self aware comedy documentary.

I’ve already seen it.

Sadly no, I guess I’d need to find it somewhere at the seven seas.

Froyn,

If you're sailing anyways...
Moon with Sam Rockwell
Midsommar
What we do in the Shadows (the original movie, not saying the tv series is bad)

For "seasonal appropriate" - White Christmas
For "silly appropriate" - Any of the old "Road To" movies.

ronflex, in What is your unpopular flim opinion

The Exorcist (original) is one of the most boring horror movies I’ve ever personally sat through and I have no earthly idea why it caused such a stir at the time. Whole movie is a snooze fest until the last bit, but I found it less scary and more humorous.

feedum_sneedson,

At the time, a child fucking themselves with a crucifix was considered rather shocking.

TBi,

Agree totally. One of my neighbours said it put the fear of god in them so I had high hopes. I was bored to tears during it.

Honestly the Simpsons rip off was more entertaining.

Jarix,

I think its like Akira for anime.

When so many people have done similar things but have improved and refined those things before you see the original, its very hard to have that same reaction to it.

Like people shitting on Greta Van Fleet for sounding like a Zepplin 2.0.

Have multiple generations come since the last time zepplin was on tour? Yes.

Does the world not get to enjoy people who sound like that live in concert because zepplin existed and there are unmistakable similarties? Kinda shitty if so

ParsnipWitch,

To understand this you have to know that at the time when “Jaws” came into cinema there were people leaving cinema during the film because they “couldn’t handle it”. There were even newspaper articles about how the movie allegedly traumatized people. The same goes for movies like “The Shining”.

When “The Exorcist” came out people were not prepared.

candyman337, (edited ) in Can someone answer a nagging question i have about CRT?
@candyman337@lemmy.world avatar

Race is related to ethnicity but also relates to a lot of cultural factors. Race is also tied to people’s perception of a person, and also tied to an individual’s identity. There are more and different races than ethnicities.

Additionally, race is linked to discrimination. Two people can be the same ethnicity but different races, because their culture and ancestral nationality are different. This often leads to people of a certain race being seen as lesser than, even though there is no biological difference. I.e. the Irish, and Italians, who are considered white now but weren’t in the past.

On top of that, people of different ethnicities can be lumped into a singular race and be discriminated against. Like Hispanic people, who have native American, Spanish, and many other ethnicities mixed in. Or Asians who have probably the most varied amount of ethnicities in their singular “race.”

Conversely you can have someone who is mixed and is technically mostly genetically ethnicities that are considered white, and would be white passing, but because they are known to have a black parent or grew up in the black community, they are considered to be a person if color, and are discriminated against in the same way as someone who is more ethnically a POC.

This discrimination and racism can cause generational trauma and wealth disparity. Which is important to learn about so people can understand how systems, at least in the U.S., are literally built in a way that makes traditionally discriminated against races more likely to be born into poverty and less likely to get out of it. CRT strives to educate the our population on these issues.

CRT teaches about the fact that Black people and other POC in the United States have been discriminated against for generations, this discrimination is/was codified in law and local ordinances. Like laws limiting POC from getting certain loans, or moving into certain neighborhoods. Then building roads around those neighborhoods separating them from the rest of the town, making it harder for those individuals to get resources. Or the fact that, in the U.S.,public schools are funded by housing taxes in an area rather than by equal funding. Meaning that low income areas (usually populated by minorities because of the previously mentioned reasons) will inherently have less funding.

All this leads to the fact that even though a lot of the racist legislation in the U.S. is gone, a lot of minorities in the U.S. have been lower income for generations. Meaning a lot of them are starting from less and will have less opportunity to achieve because the just don’t have the same resources and education available. And today, because of all this, we are seeing things like schools being more segregated than ever, even more than they were even in times where segregation was in law.

If our population is not educated on these topics, these things will never change. These people will never get the help they need. This is why CRT in a lot of experts opinions is sorely needed in the American education curriculum.

Oppenheimer SUCKED.

Welt,

Cillian Murphy was good, the historical figures were well represented if you know a bit about the history of quantum mechanics, and the overall movie was a disappointment compared to the hype at the time, but it will be forgotten. That doesn’t mean it SUCKED though.

BoastfulDaedra,

It SUCKED.

BoastfulDaedra,

AaaaaaAAAAAUUUUooooauuuRRRRGH!!!

angrystego,

Sucking is subjective. The same film can not suck for you and suck for BoastfulDaedra. That’s what an unpopular opinion is about - if you disagree with them, you should upvote them!

ElPussyKangaroo,

I enjoyed the movie but the explosion was insanely underwhelming for sure. The ONE time VFX made sense.

Imagine him doing the same with the fkn Black Hole in Interstellar.

finthechat,
@finthechat@kbin.social avatar

Nolan is a hack film director. A true auteur would've actually nuked Hiroshima again.

ElPussyKangaroo,

With the budget and the tools he has? He should’ve nuked Japan. Then he’d be able to also direct the next live action Godzilla.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original) was a terrible film. The only reason people say it is the greatest classic horror film is because of nostalgia. The acting was horrible and it wasn’t scary in the slightest (I understand it was probably for the time).

thisbenzingring,

its a terrible movie but its a fucking amazing film.

if you ever watch it again, look at its edits and specifically the gore. You never actually see Leatherface inflicting any damage on someone. It’s always a trick of the mind that you see the violence but it never actually happens on the screen.

I agree its kinda lame but it is actually an amazing creation.

serpineslair,

Wasn’t there a scene where you saw someone’s leg sliced into with the chainsaw?

thisbenzingring,

They used pigs blood and maybe there’s a cutting but it would have been framed in a way that it just makes you believe it’s someone’s leg.

I studied film in college and that film was one of our subjects because of the diy and extremely low budget it had while creating something that is still considered peerless

TheEighthDoctor,

Same for the original Japanese Ringu

JimVanDeventer,

I only saw it this year and wasn’t expecting much, but the cinematography is gorgeous.

Candelestine, (edited ) in What are some channels or creators that do science/engineering experiments?

Alright, I’ll just dump:

PBS Spacetime, for answers to roughly-university-level physics and foundational science: youtube.com/

The Science Asylum, for quicker, more concise answers to specific physics questions in Bill Nye style: youtube.com/

Sabine Hossenfelder, for science news updates: youtube.com/

Dr Becky, for astronomy/astrophysics news: youtube.com/

SEA, for more accessible astronomy/astrophysics explainers: youtube.com/

Scott Manley, for space exploration/engineering analysis: youtube.com/

NileRed for hands-on chemistry: youtube.com/

Journey to the Microcosmos for microscope science: youtube.com/

Institute of Human Anatomy for physiology, with a lean towards medicine: youtube.com/

Lastly, the Godfather himself, Mark Rober for mechanical/electrical engineering, and how to use ultra-fine glitter and fart spray to fight package thieves: youtube.com/

You changed the world, Mark.

Once you start digging through enough of these, the algorithm will pick up that you like good science stuff, and will start helping you out a little. There’s thousands of them now, professionals, working fully within their areas of demonstrated expertise. I recommend googling their full names and checking their background before trusting them yourself. This is like, off the top of my head, though, just some of my favorites for evening background audio.

There’s also whole worlds of math youtubers in-line with all the above, that are outside the scope of this question.

I’ll edit if I think of more. I probably will.

edit: I do realize several of these, such as the astrophysicists, are not experimental. I’m digging for more experiment-oriented types, but neither my memory nor my algorithm is helping.

gotrandom, in Does anyone else resent the links to Reddit?

I think treating Reddit like an other source of information (whether valuable or not) is fine to reference for conversation or topics. While I’m pissed at what the overlords there have done, it still has a large source of community based information.

Crowfiend,

I agree, but only with the amendment that links to reddit only be text posts and comment chains, or otherwise reddit-exclusive things such as /r/place.

Images and links should bypass reddit altogether and just link to the first source link (ie, the news article or w/e), or be posted as a lemmy image post with a credit citation in the description.

Nobody wants to have to click through 3 different pages to learn who’s winning what war or to see a picture of a cat.

Yea if you want to steal something from Reddit, copy the content and paste it here. Don’t just post a link and direct traffic back to that shithole.

For some types of posts that's fine - the capybara community, for instance, is a steady stream of capybaras from reddit (I think) and that's not the type of post that needs interaction with OP or comments. Posts from say, tech support, very inappropriate to copy to Lemmy imo without a link back and an explanation as it might get a conversation going but it also confuses people who think their response might be seen by the OP.

    0ops,

That’s my take. What’s even the point of reposting r/askreddit posts?
