I read fiction for a certain amount of enjoyment, but also to prepare for conversation with people when it's required in the near future.

CubbyTustard, in You have to spend the rest of your life in a micronation. Which do you choose?

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Sealand

Sealand, might be able to trade a Dukedom for the right supplies

GreyShuck, (edited ) in You have to spend the rest of your life in a micronation. Which do you choose?

The closest to me AFAIK is Sealand, but I’d rather not, tbh. I do actually have a passport from Waveland, declared as part of a Greenpeace campaign some years back and based on Rockall, but also not too appealing as a long-term residence.

At one site that I lived and worked on for several years, we discussed declaring unilateral independence on several occasions. It was a shingle spit nature reserve and seemed a promising location, but we never did. Well, not so far.

Overall, the Free Borough of Llanrwst looks a good bet. I have been there and definitely enjoy the area.

peto, in You have to spend the rest of your life in a micronation. Which do you choose?

Are there any good ones? Am I allowed to launch a coup?

nodsocket,

You can launch a coup.

SgtAStrawberry,

Well Jämtland is Jämtland, but there is nothing wrong with that one. Really nice place, the biggest town is lovely, if you don’t like the city ther is plenty of smaller towns, villages and cabins in the woods. They even have there own famous lake monster.

I would recommend against the coup, but if you gave your mind set you can probably find some new friends there to help you.

cheese_greater, in You have to spend the rest of your life in a micronation. Which do you choose?

Can I afford it if I choose some place like Monaco?

nodsocket,

No guarantees on money but you can’t leave. Also Monaco doesn’t count because it’s a city state and is internationally recognized.

cheese_greater,

K fine, SeaLand but it better have internet and proper food. Also I’m bringing my pets and Imma need AmazonPrime and all the credit I can eat

Devi, (edited ) in You have to spend the rest of your life in a micronation. Which do you choose?

Does the vatican count? I'd get into the archives and make it my lifes work to find all the secrets.

Plus it's pretty cool there, there's people who do spend their lives there, and always visitors from round the world to hang out with.

nodsocket,

Vatican is an internationally recognized city state and does not count.

TheWeirdestCunt,

Technically so is sealand though, the UK and Germany both had to recognise it at different points

nodsocket,

Not currently recognized though, so it still counts

Phen, in What is something you watch/do but not for its intended purpose?

I watch big brother to get inspiration for writing characters in my games. It’s really effective at showing how people can get into a whirlpool of confusion just by lack of proper communication.

SpaceNoodle,

I just rip off Shakespeare

bionicjoey, in What is something you watch/do but not for its intended purpose?

Sometimes I watch NSFW ASMR videos in order to trigger my ASMR.

Boozilla,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

Seems like a lot of folks may do the opposite.

Wait…did the joke just whoosh over my head? It whooshed, didn’t it.

bionicjoey,

I mean my answer was half-joking, so I guess you get a half-woosh (woc). Like yes, I do sometimes do what I said above, but everyone watching these videos understands that they serve 2 purposes

themurphy, in Do Israeli Politicians' adult children get conscripted just like the average adult Israeli citizen as part of mandatory service?

If your main question is if it leads to more morally correct decisions, then that would be a very hard no.

Most people do believe they are doing the right thing. The Americans are, the Russians are and the Chinese are. They DO believe what they do is correct. Same with religion.

But does that make any of the above groups more correct than the other? The answer is: No, it’s their actions that shows that.

My point is, Israel will always think what they do is morally correct, no matter if it is or not. And when you act in that belief, you can justify almost anything in the world. Because you really think it’s the right thing to do.

cheese_greater,

Mabe morally correct isn’t quite the right notion. Maybe I was more getting at good faith plus worth the potential loss of a beloved member of their family for yhe greater good.

Its very easy to make abstract bloody decisions and send strangers children to war if it never hits close to home so I was playing with that notion as a nexus to getting a better understanding of why Israel would engage in Hydra-busting (West Bank expansion etc) if they were on the hook (in terms of their offsprings lives) for the collateral damage likely to result from such controversial and perilous efforts

QaspR, (edited )

Sounds like what you are trying to articulate is the idea of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_relativism.

Descriptive moral relativism holds only that people do, in fact, disagree fundamentally about what is moral, with no judgment being expressed on the desirability of this.

hperrin, in What is something you watch/do but not for its intended purpose?

I don’t know if this is its intended purpose, but every time I move I watch Hoarders so I’m compelled to throw away a bunch of my stuff.

I watch stealth campers on YouTube, even though I have zero interest in camping myself. I’m impressed and entertained by their ingenuity and explorer approach to things. It’s also a tiny push back against a corpo-fashy culture that wants people to “spend money here or move along”. These stealth camper people are harming no one (and the good ones pick up a lot of litter). But of course the “people of Nextdoor” suburban types flip the fuck out over stranger danger, so the campers have to avoid getting caught. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want some rando squatting in my backyard, either. I’m talking about people camping in parks, parking lots, medians, interstitial woodlands, etc.

kakes,

Steve is a national treasure, as far as I’m concerned.

Boozilla,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

I agree! I’m not Canadian, but if I get a proxy vote, he’s a national treasure!

kakes,

I’ll allow it, but only this once.

cheese_greater, (edited )

continental treasure

waz,

I never knew this was a thing until I read this comment. I love this idea sooo much.

Check out Steve Wallis on YouTube. There are others, but he’s super likeable.

And now it’s time for a Step Two.

SpaceNoodle, in What is something you watch/do but not for its intended purpose?

I see that you also like to cram random apostrophes where they don’t belong.

fastandcurious,

Ah, sorry, fixed

deweydecibel, (edited ) in What are some uBlock Origin filters you're using to make the internet nicer to use?

Mine are all super specific to sites I use and various elements of them I hate.

Just little things that I don’t want to see. “Score” gets blocked on Reddit. Don’t have a problem with the voting, but the numbers are just distracting to me.

For a similar example, I tend to go out of my way to create filters that block random visual ratings for media. Like when you search for a movie and get the IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes scores without having asked for them.

Not that I have a problem with ratings in general, it’s that they’re effectively opinions, and when I want to hear opinions on media, I’ll go look for them. I really don’t like looking up something about a show or movie I enjoy and see a giant visual indicator “HEY PEOPLE HATE THIS”, or vise versa. Or you’re just going to OpenSubtitles or a meta data site to get something and have to be reminded how the internet feels about this thing.

One odd stand out is Sonarr/Radarr. I can’t create a filter for those search results, because they’re not elements on the page apparently, and there’s no setting to turn it off.

AudaCity, in Which items/products were you once able to get from local shops on a whim that you now more or less have to order online?

Printer Ink for my weird tiny printer. It isn’t available in most stores any more and I have to order it online

crimroy, in What is your favorite time travel movie or show?

Timecrimes

Cavemanfreak,

Was looking for this! I think a lot of people have missed this one because it’s in spanish, but it’s really good!
