wjrii, in How do you treat a cold?
@wjrii@kbin.social avatar

Beyond all the stuff you likely know, rest, pain reliever, nyquil, etc., I find that with a cold my life really goes to shit if my nose is running. It's god-damn miserable and keeps me from sleeping, and even lotioned tissues only delay the chafing (of my NOSE, you creeps!). A generic Claritin every 14-16 hours (I don't get a full 24 hours, but they do tend to work well) dries me out enough that I can ride it out.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Thanks! I don't really have a stuffy nose as it all seems to be draining into my lungs (yummy) but I'm gonna try a Claritin to see if it helps

wjrii,
@wjrii@kbin.social avatar

Good luck, if thin drainage is troubling you, that might help even if you're not the mucus faucet that I turn into. Mostly it's just treat the most annoying symptoms and let your body heal.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Thank you so much for this tip! I took some knock-me-out nigh time meds and noticed they had an antihistamine, so this morning I took a clairitin.

My sinuses are clear and draining well, and my ears unclogged as well. I’d call it a miracle if I didn’t know it was science.

Toes, in Lemmy, recommend me a good budget Android phone please

Motorola has a bunch on Amazon currently. Pick out the one that is most affordable.

SurpriZe,

Which model would you recommend?

And we don’t have Amazon here.

dan1101,

Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G 2023

Toes,

The last one I bought was a few years back. But it has a big battery. Moto G8 Power Lite if you can find it don’t pay too much it’s a older model.

LucasWaffyWaf,

I’m rocking the Moto 5G Ace One and it’s been doing me just fine for the last two years.

eating3645,

It’s been a few years since I’ve had one, but budget Motorola phones have treated me well in the past.

VanitasTheUnversed, in What is the name for the feeling of nostalgia, loneliness, eeriness and liminality that comes when listening to songs like subwoofer lullaby?

Frission, maybe?

9point6,

Just because you’re making the same mistake I did for a number of years, frisson doesn’t have a 2nd “i”

tygerprints, in What is the name for the feeling of nostalgia, loneliness, eeriness and liminality that comes when listening to songs like subwoofer lullaby?

Sort of a vibrant or vivid melancholy, maybe? Some songs by certain groups do that to me also - that song, "remind me" by royksopp always brings on those feelings. I think that listening to music makes you feel like everything in your body is opening up a little, loosening and relaxing and decompressing.

Amends1782, in What reasons are there for being concerned about companies like google and meta etc collecting data and tracking me?

Fairphone 4 maybe? You pay a little extra for the faitrade stuff, but it’s still not awfully expensive

SurpriZe,

Thanks but it’s not sold in Vietnam.

I_Fart_Glitter, in What is your favourite floor cleaner liquid and why?

“WHO USES FLOOR CLEANER? WHAT ARE YOU, AN ORDERLY FROM THE 1950s?!!”

CowsLookLikeMaps,

People who own a mop and have a floor?

I_Fart_Glitter,

Sorry, it’s from a sitcom (Superstore). It’s funny because after the main character yells that at a customer, she is shown mopping the floor in the next scene.

CowsLookLikeMaps,

Oh, my bad then. Missed the reference.

I_Fart_Glitter,

It’s my feel good show of the moment, sorry I used to give you a bad feel.

Real answer though, I asked the cleaning lady at my work if I could provide an unscented product for her to use on the floors because the Pine Sol gives me a headache. She said her favorite product for floors is Amway All Purpose Cleaner, she just uses the Pine Sol because clients like to “smell the clean.” You don’t have to join the pyramid selling scheme to get it anymore: www.amazon.com/…/B09BTPZGZN/

I use vinegar at home, but I just have shitty linoleum.

AlolanYoda,

How do you clean your floor without a mop? Is floor cleaner liquid still allowed?

Also what do you use a mop for without a floor?

8bitguy,

You don't even need the mop. A rag gets the job done. Cleaning the floor is just part of cleaning.

CowsLookLikeMaps,

sigh

Maalus,

Yay internet, where every single person thinks they’re funny, huh? These guys, the emacs guys above, sometimes I wish people would act online as they do irl

Chainweasel, in Lemmy, recommend me a good budget Android phone please

Get a flagship phone from a generation or two ago, I’m still using my Pixel 5 and I love this phone and they’re dirt cheap at the moment, both new and refurbished, because it’s 3 generations behind

SurpriZe,

Thanks! But what newest features are missing there? Does Pixel 5 have anything useful the newer models don’t?

Chainweasel,

Well, in my opinion the fingerprint sensor is far superior for one. Other than that it’s a little smaller than current generation phones but I think it’s a more manageable size than the current generation

RvTV95XBeo, in What is your favourite floor cleaner liquid and why?

Got a steam mop - just use plain water, will never go back. If there’s a particularly dirty spot I may hit it with a little dish soap and a scrub brush, but otherwise it’s 99% steam cleaning.

CowsLookLikeMaps,

Didn’t even know that existed! Thank you stranger. Is there one you’d recommend?

GCanuck,

Not OP, and I don’t have a brand recommendation, but a word of advice. If you get a steam mop, it may be beneficial to use distilled water and not tap water. If you have hard tap water, the junk will build up in your mop and you’ll need to clean it.

Tap water will work just fine, but it will effectively shorten the lifespan.

But I really can’t recommend a steam mop enough. No chemicals, just water and power. And it cleans even the nastiest of spills.

RvTV95XBeo,

I agree with this, but honestly I use filtered water from my fridge. I considered it a bit of a middle ground, still harder than distilled, but better than tap.

RvTV95XBeo,

Here’s the one I use and enjoy (Shark S7001) - www.amazon.com/…/B08QZTSHFX/

I’ve only had it for about a year so I can’t speak for its longevity, but I can appreciate that it scrubs and steams at the same time and does a pretty good job removing dirt etc.

SpaceNoodle, in What is your favourite floor cleaner liquid and why?

I prefer emacs

hddsx,

I have yet to meet a single person in real life who uses emacs

SpaceNoodle,

Well, I used to.

Spastickyle,

I’ve been using vim or vi for decades! Mostly because I still can’t figure out how to exit the editor.

Grabthar,

Me too. I once opened vim in my kitchen and couldn’t get back out for a month.

altima_neo,
@altima_neo@lemmy.zip avatar

Se that’s why I just use Windows. Until they freeze up and then I can’t get out

RvTV95XBeo,

SpaceNoodle,

I actually use nano in the terminal, I just wanted to reignite the old flame war

Cqrd,

Sounds like a nano user to me

I’d get a generation or two old pixel, can get fully unlocked ones on Amazon for pretty cheap. Just replaced my mother’s pixel 2 with a pixel 5 for less than $200

ChexMax,

Agreed. I’m about to update to the new (to me) Google Pixel, probably the 6a. (I think they’re on the 8 now?) The battery on my current pixel is not holding up. My last two phones were pixels and probably my next couple will be as well

Brunbrun6766,
@Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world avatar

My whole family is on pixels, very reliable phones. My mother’s pixel 2 was 6 years old and only failed because the battery began to swell.

SurpriZe,

What does fully unlocked mean? Can such phones be sold at official retailers? And if not, why would I want it unlocked? Plus, is it easy to do so?

Alborlin,

Word of advice, pixel is good for software, camera but that’s it. Don’t take it I less you can use esim with physical sim, as it has NO double SIM slot , that’s a must have feature for me. So quite useless in most of ASIA.

pivot_root,

Unlocked means it’s not tied to a carrier (mobile phone provider).

Not too sure about the rest of the world, but North America has a huge problem with carrier-locked devices. You buy a phone from YourCellProvider, and you’re stuck using the phone only with YourCellProvider.

Grabthar,

What a pain. They finally ended this in Canada at the end of 2017. All phones sold since then have to be sold unlocked. Any phone sold before that time is likely still locked to a carrier, but that carrier must provide the unlock code for free upon request. Feels like they did this one right, and it is great to be able to keep an old flagship device for 5+ years and travel with it or move services around as needed.

pivot_root,

You’ve had that for 6 years? Holy damn, I’m envious. It’s OEM or get fucked over here.

SurpriZe,

Ah, we don’t have anything like that here.

Zealousideal_Fox900,

In australia we have it too and really bad. Basically all phones are locked to the former nationalized carrier Telstra.

ASeriesOfPoorChoices,

It’s free and instant to unlock, you just have to ask.

  • RogueBanana,

Damn america is so good at coming up with the most distopian solutions ever and it sucks that people still allow them to

    ShortFuse,

It’s more because they’ll let you pay for the phone in two years with 0% APR, but you can’t just leave, not pay, and use the phone on another provider.

Before it used to be free or heavily discounted, but now it’s just a 0% APR credit service.

    feef,

I can not recommend pixels anymore after owning my 7 pro for a year (been using google phones since the nexus 5x). Their own tensor chip is behind the competition by 2 years, but importantly they use a shitty modem which causes issues for a large portion of users.

Also pixels used to have a significantly better camera than others, but I feel that gap is so small now that it doesn’t matter at the high end, they’re trading blows now.
The only edge compared to the competition is getting access to google app features earlier than others, like magic eraser. Ain’t what it used to be anymore…

    RogueBanana,

The single best feature and the only one that I looked for before buying my pixel was the custom ROM support. Installed grapheneos on day 1, nothing is the only other company in the market here that allows you to unlock bootloader without voiding the warranty so didn’t really have much choice to go for tbh. Would be nice if other ones like fairphone would expand out soon.

    ShortFuse,

Finally upgraded my MIL’s Pixel 2 to a Pixel 4 5G for $150 on Amazon. It supports Android 14.

popcap200, in Lemmy, recommend me a good budget Android phone please

I’d personally recommend the second hand market depending on what your budget is.

    SurpriZe,

I’ve been thinking about it but Amazon here is not an option and other local shops are not very trustworthy. The warranty they give is about 3 months on average, or none at all.

    jo3jo3,

I’ve bought phones on Lazada in Vietnam and everything went fine. And I’ve bought phones from some of the bigger chain phone shops here and it’s usually a one year warranty.

    SurpriZe,

Yes, I’ve been thinking of going the online shopping path, too.

    What phone would you recommend?

    Mr_Dr_Oink,

    www.amazon.co.uk/…/ref=asc_df_B0BWNPYJM3/?tag=goo…

I know younsa8d somewhere you cant use amazon but something like this is perfect. A colleague at work uses a cheap moto phone and they are great considering they are ridiculously cheep. This on is £70 (about 2m vnd) compared to a current flagship phone that can cost over £1000

Moto g series is excellent value for money.

    ikidd,
    @ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

Try Swappa, they test the phones before they’re resent to you, and you have some opportunity for a refund.

Fake4000, in Lemmy, recommend me a good budget Android phone please

Depends on how you define good budget.

To me, the Samsung galaxy a phones and the pixel a phones are good. They strike the balance between value and having an actually usable phone.

    __ghost__,

Non-profit, open source and extremely privacy consious. You’ll need a rooted Pixel device and you can download/learn about the ROM here: grapheneos.org

I liked GrapheneOS but I didn’t like the pixel hardware personally

    SurpriZe,

Definitely not more than 200usd. Thanks for the advice!

    @sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

I would echo what OP said there, I had to get a temporary replacement phone while my main one was getting a screen repair, and I was amazed at how good a Galaxy A was for the price. Think it was about £120 or so, and it’s a great phone.

    SurpriZe,

    Which model specifically?

helmet91, in Why do most people not post?

I have nothing to share. Funny thing is, as an IT person, I’ve even built my own blog just to have one and share obstacles and solutions I find during my developer journey, and then, once I finished and published it, I was thinking “damn, now what should I post about?” My blog is almost empty ever since then. So… yeah. As for me, I have absolutely nothing to share and I’ve made the extra mile to not share anything.

    ALostInquirer,

[…] I’ve even built my own blog just to have one and share obstacles and solutions I find during my developer journey, and then, once I finished and published it, I was thinking “damn, now what should I post about?” My blog is almost empty ever since then.

So, is the almost because it does cover the making of and then stops afterward, or…It’s the wonderfiller text only? 😂
