Honestly for 70 Lei it wasn’t a bad experience but the whole feel of the castle is almost entirely to play into the cliche vampire/medieval fantasy trope and for tourist to say they have visited a castle.
My recommendation is to visit, but keep expectations at a min. I’ve been twice now and both times felt lack luster and meh.
If you want a real cool castle like experience and are in Brasov, take the train down to Sinaia and visit Peeles castle. You will not regret it at all. From the grounds, the exterior and the interior, it really is something out of fairy tale or something.
Corvin’s castle near Deva is another great castle to apparently vist over Bran but I never got the ability to visit so I can’t speak to that as much.
Wow, absolutely gorgeous. According to my father and his cabal of genealogy enthusiasts, allegedly this place used to be a holding of some distant ancestors of mine. I always used to get a kick out of looking at the family tree, where one guy would have a title, something like “Lord of Warwick Castle” (I can’t remember it exactly), then only to look a generation later and see a note by the next guy, saying “Re-Took Warwick Castle.”
Was just gonna write about it to your other comment lol. Yep, that’s the place, one of those plans was Joachim III, the then patriach of Bulgaria until 1300…
Due to wars and castles being torn down as to prevent rebellions or just for the materials during ottoman times Baba Vida remains the only fully intact castle in Bulgaria.
What a shame. This castle is so beautiful. I can’t help but wonder how much history we lost.
I live in a small town in Italy and apparently we had a castle, but it was torn down two centuries ago and what remains today is just half the remains of one of the towers. Makes me sad every time I walk past it.
It’s pretty unfortunate. There’s been some attempts at reconstructing some of the castles but let’s say they weren’t ideal.
We could at least look on the bright side that although the castles are mostly in ruin, the legacy and culture of the medieval Bulgarian states still remain.
Nevertheless it definitely could feel like a piece of history is just gone.
Been to a fair amount of castles in the past few years, but this is top of my list to visit. No plans to be in the area anytime soon, but I hope it’s sooner rather than later.
Same here and what’s so special in this case is that the castle has been in the same family for it’s entire 800 years of existence. That is really super rare.
