I need a new bench power supply

Hello, I did manage to kill my cheap-ish bench supply causing it to randomly output up to like 300% the set voltage when under load which did already kill one board. Probably I didn’t actively kill it but the chinesium did its job 🤷🏻‍♂️. It was a single output supply, when needed I hooked up additional buck- or linear regulators to get additional voltages which isn’t that convenient. So I’d like to get a reliable new one with at least two, preferably three outputs. Is something like a Keysight EDU36311A worth it for daily but mainly hobby usage? I’d be okay with the price if it would be like the last supply I ever have to buy. Alternatively a Siglent SPD3303X (or the -E) it’s also a triple output supply (the third channel only has three predefined voltages tho which is kind of a downside).

linker3000,

Sorry - questions go in Askelectronics - sidebar shoulda told ya.

sweafa,

i like those triple supplies from rigol. its much like the siglent you posted, but the 3rd channel is not fixed. its also fairly easy to script it with python. dp800 series.

hjkl,

This is an nice review of all four keysight smart bench essentials: goughlui.com/…/roadtest-review-keysight-smart-ben…

Rolive,

You could be really cheap about it and get some dc dc converter module, volt ammeter and an old laptop charger.

The other option is a used one off ebay, could probably find an older one from one of the good brands for $100-200.

Yondoza,

None of us can tell you if it’s worth it for you. That’s super subjective based on your cash on hand and what you’re trying to do. How often do you use three separate DC voltages? Should you just do a dual output and keep a cheap single output on the side for the rare occasion you need 3? We can’t answer that.

Those two you selected look like great quality products from respected brands.

Could you find similar functionality cheaper? Almost certainly, for probably lower quality.

Can you find better quality between those two pricepoints with the same functionality? I don’t know, but I think this is the question to ask.

LEDZeppelin,

Holy fk they’re expensive

glibg10b,

Lab equipment does tend to be expensive

RagnarokOnline,

I don’t know anything about electronics, but I’m rooting for you to get your answer from someone out there
