Part of the Arab slave trade, I believe.

niktemadur,

And who was casting the nets that kept on capturing people all the way into the 20th century?

One would imagine Arabs themselves wouldn’t want to “get their hands dirty”, would have the middleman ships full of slaves arrive at their ports and then have the auctions begin.

I haven’t seen that in ages. I’m glad it still exists.

glimse,

I had to Google it to see if Let Me Google That For You still existed. I wish someone would have googled it for me…

onion,

The problem with this is that it assumes google still finds relevant results

DolphinMath,

it also assumes that one person’s results on Google are the same as another’s. Sadly with the enshittification of the internet, we can’t take it for granted anymore.

Samuel Chidwick, 74, has donated photographs taken by his father Able Seaman Joseph Chidwick, born in 1881, on board HMS Sphinx off the East African coast in about 1907. The photographs, on display at the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth, Hants, show a sailor removing the manacle from a newly-freed slave as well as the ship’s marines escorting captured slavers.

Mr Chidwick, of Dover, Kent, said: “The pictures were taken by my father who was serving aboard HMS Sphinx while on armed patrol off the Zanzibar and Mozambique coast. “They caught quite a few slavers and those particular slaves that are in the pictures happened while he was on watch. “That night a dhow sailed by and the slaves were all chained together.

He raised the alarm and they got them on to the ship and got the chains knocked off them. “They then questioned them and sent a party of marines ashore to try to track the slave traders down. “They caught two of them and I believe they were of Arabic origin. “My father thought the slave trade was a despicable thing that was going on, the slaves were treated very badly so when they got the slavers they didn’t give them a very nice time.”

MajorHavoc,

the slaves were treated very badly so when they got the slavers they didn’t give them a very nice time.

I may be reading into it, but I wonder if that’s that generations way of saying they beat the shit out of the slavers before turning them over to the authorities, without admitting to anything specific.

Ways to tell your political and economic philosophy has a sound basis:

  1. You have to shoot people to keep them from trying to escape your system
MaryReadsBooks,
  1. You let people die if they are not deemed valuable enough by your system
PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

That's every system, though.

MaryReadsBooks,

Well… Fuck Systems then. Also, not every System lets peolle die who are not considered valuable for the system. For example: For a liberal, Nazis are not deemed valuable for upholding a liberal democracy. Still, they are not killed based in that. For a capitalist homeless and poor are not valuable, whereas the fear of becoming these and die is. In a Capitalist System the poor can die because it is even valuable for creating pressure to work for the capitalist. Sadly many of these systems are interlocking. And of course capitalist liberal democracies still let people die. But not every System HAS to let people die, if they are not deemed valuable enough, and not every System values People based on their bodies. (Every System values people based on their ideology)

Galton introduced fingerprinting in South Africa as an experiment after Indians introduced it to him. Managing miners using fingerprints was one of those moments capitalism and colonialism converged on science and technology and shaped the global sector we now call identification.

Klystron, in American pilot Gail Halvorsen throws candy to German children during the Berlin Airlift, 1949

I met him at a conference in 2019. He told his story and was just really awe inspiring against the backdrop of what was going on in Germany at the time. Quite the guy, glad to have served in his Air Force!

PugJesus, in American pilot Gail Halvorsen throws candy to German children during the Berlin Airlift, 1949
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

After one of those missions, while waiting for his aircraft to be reloaded, Col (Retd) Halvorsen saw 30 German children by the wire fence. He spoke with them for a while and was astounded by how grateful they were for something as simple as a bag of flour.

Speaking with BFBS in 1998, Gail described the children he met, saying: "The children of Berlin didn't have any gum and candy, hadn't had any for months.

"And the ones I met didn't beg for any, I couldn't believe that these kids would not ask for it.

"They were so grateful, thankful to have flour, to be free. They wouldn't lower themselves to be beggars."

The moment moved Col (Retd) Halvorsen so much that he broke the two pieces of chewing gum he had on him in half and was able to hand out four pieces to the children, but 26 others went empty-handed. He said: "They just wanted a piece of the wrapper to smell and then once they got a half a stick, tore off the wrapper and let them smell it.

"And I couldn't believe it for a smell, the reaction."

This chance encounter inspired Col (Retd) Halvorsen to return with more chewing gum plus sweets and chocolates for the children of Berlin.

Following his first encounter with the children of Berlin, Col (Retd) Halvorsen was determined to return as soon as possible with more treats, so that those who missed out the first time could enjoy some 'candy'. He said: "I told the other kids they could come back the next day and ... I'd drop enough gum for all of them to have some.

"Well, we couldn't buy very much gum and candy in the American military, so I'd have to wait a week.

"All week the kids were out there still waving, so I dropped it again and the crowd got bigger and bigger."

A few weeks later, one of the miniature parachutes containing sweet treats almost hit someone who worked at a German newspaper, prompting him to take a photo of Col (Retd) Halvorsen's aircraft and the parachutes.

This was a turning point in the story of the Candy Bomber as the veteran explained to BFBS, saying: "He got a picture of my airplane and the parachutes and my Colonel saw it and he got angry with me.

"He said, 'Why didn't you ask permission?' And I said, 'I didn't think you'd approve it' and he said 'you're right but the General saw it and he likes it so keep doing it'.

"So we got all the stuff we could drop."

Torvum, in Nazis wading through ice-cold water in Russia, WW2, 1942

Question to those who are cringe here, would these not be Wehrmacht conscripts, unlikely to be politically aligned to the National Socialists. It’s 1942, and presumably front line troops, during Germany’s backfoot of November to December.

The bulk of volunteers was from 36-39, but Germany forced conscripts till the end of the war sooooooo. Act like a fucking human being and respect the dead.

Kusimulkku,

Wermacht was fairly politically aligned. The individual soldier might’ve not been politically aligned but I wouldn’t really mind Wermacht troops being labeled Nazi troops.

PugJesus,

What do you call someone who's 'brave' enough to fight for genocide, but not brave enough to fight against it?

A fucking Nazi.

Bondrewd,

Does that mean that you parttaking in an exploitative society by contributing taxes and work hours to its economy makes you a capitalist pig?

If you think of it its pretty easy. Just dont work for them and dont pay taxes. If you think deserting to the soviets who most likely just put you in some kind of barn and starve you/send you back on the front as a human wave is acceptable it must surely not be that bad to not be a scourge on society.

PugJesus,

There's a world of difference between serving as a soldier and serving as a worker.

If you think deserting to the soviets who most likely just put you in some kind of barn and starve you/send you back on the front as a human wave is acceptable it must surely not be that bad to not be a scourge on society.

Great Nazi apologia. "The alternative is possibly dying q.q so it's better to fight and possibly die for genocide instead!"

Bondrewd,

You are gravely mistaken. Im not raising pillaging Eastern front troops to your throne of righteousness, Im pushing the rest of the pretentious fuckers closer to theirs.

Wermacht soldiers, most likely the majority, were the guys who got pulled into the doings of the Nazi regime. Not nazis, coerced into nazi biddings. I cant call them nazies with a serious face.

If you look at average low wage voters in Murica, dont tell me you are seriously thinking of people who got their shit together enough and have a coherent enough world view. Fuck no.

The SS? Those were pretty directly driven to methodical extermination and such. They are more deserving of the word nazies.

The Wehrmacht was Nazi from top to bottom

Bondrewd,

Tell me statistics. You state it was Nazi top to bottom. The article states “many officers and average soldiers”. The latter is closer to what I stated.

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

According to Heer, ‘60 to 80 per cent’ of German soldiers who fought on the eastern front participated in war crimes.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/341229466_Crimes_of_the_Wehrmacht_A_Re-evaluation

Bondrewd,

Understandable, thank you! I was guessing 20-30% with it being higher among officers, but I do not read that much on it.

Although I still cant be convinced on you really getting what “fighting for” and “better choice” means in this context.

I lived by myself for years without much of a social interaction in my usual week or month and very often had the most fucked up thoughts in that deprived state.

Are they nazis when viewed as part of the system? Can be argued. On a personal level? Locked in their little miserable bubble? Suicidal and homicidal come hand in hand. I dont think they had any advanced thoughts on it in the winter on the steppes while their hand froze to ice. They were deprived, fucked up murderers.
