Can’t say they’re particularly wrong but I feel like this is going at it the wrong way. It’s not like TikTok is particularly problematic, it’s just that the platform is so massively popular the general problem with big tech social media has become so big it can’t be ignored anymore.
(for profit) Social media has an inherent interest in fostering an unhealthy environment because angry people tend to argue with the people they’re angry at more so than people agreeing or politely disagreeing with each other. It’s no wonder everyone is shouting at each other when the media everyone is doing the shouting on have a vested interest in making sure that the shouting be as loud as possible.
Non-profit social media isn't exactly healthy either.
I know beehaw is a relative safe haven, but venture to other instances in the fediverse and you'll find cesspits of toxicity that are as bad as it gets.
And given what my experiences with toxic positivity, cancelling and culture wars in minority run communities which should know better, I doubt beehaw doesn't have its fair share of toxicity too. Even if you manage to keep out the worst bigots, people who have been hurt or bullied, quite often end up hurting or bullying others.
I mean that’s fair enough, I’m not arguing Big Tech is solely to blame. Heck before big Social Media was a thing you still had your forum trolls trying to make everyone else’s life as miserable as possible, among other infamous archetypes of insufferabiltiy. But I think (I have no data on this) that the environments found in the Fediverse are, on average, healthier than what you find on Big Tech platforms.
Whether that’s down to fewer people using the Fediverse or the approach being better I cannot back with data. It’s just a gut feeling that the entire structure is more geared toward facilitating a healthy community (let’s ignore lemmy’s absolute lack of moderation tools here for a second)
Generically, security cameras are computers in a box that have a good camera, a surprising amount of processing power to deal with the video stream, and an evolving level of ability to do inference. Hikvision is/was effectively the leading networked security/surveillance camera manufacturer on the planet for the combination of price and quality, but it seems odd to blame the company for what is a sort of generic tool at this point - maybe a bad analogy, but it would be like blaming Google for Android devices being everywhere.
Android devices are also surveillance tools which can be abused by intelligence agencies or intrusive governments. It’s actually very difficult to find an international company which is not responsible for facilitating atrocities for their own benefit. I know corporations are amoral rather than immoral because they care only about maximizing profit and stockholder value, but the major harms and recklessness with innocent and powerless people is pretty fucked up whether that was the intention or considered an unimportant consequence in the pursuit of greater and greater wealth.
It’s a good example of the problem with modern capitalism: you pay someone so you can listen to some music, and you end up supporting the exploitation not only of the artists but also of oppressed people on the other side of the world, while enabling some guys in suits to buy yachts.
“Je ne vois pas dans la religion le mystère de l’Incarnation mais le mystère de l’Ordre Social. La religion rattache au ciel une idée d’égalité qui empêche le riche d’être massacré par le pauvre.” (Napoléon Bonaparte / 1769-1821 / au Conseil d’Etat, le 4 mars 1806)
Even if they were, even if each individual person in Gaza was personally responsible for 9/11, this wouldn’t be allowed. The Geneva convention does not allow this treatment.
Israel is clearly a bad actor here. Both sides committed war crimes and this is a generational hatred on both sides. Hatred exists on both sides too. I’m not a fan of either side because I’m not a fan of generational hatred.
At the same time, being able to hold to opinions at once, I believe that Israel has been allowed to run roughshod over the Palestinian people and that imbalance of power is injustice beyond what I personally can imagine.
That said, the US should’ve stopped Israel. That’s bullshit. Apparently the US government can’t find money for education, roads, or health care but there’s no problem killing Palestinian kids.
Really lays bare the priorities. It’s disgusting, appaling… Actually, no I don’t have words for but it is.
This Icelandic guy has a YouTube channel with great 4K drone footage of the area (and the rest of Iceland).
He is (obviously) doing a lot of coverage in this area currently and has some snippets of info from Icelandic Volcanologists that may not be available elsewhere.
This is going to be one of those moments that creates a generational shift.
Boomers are never going to turn on Israel en masse, but when Millennials and Zoomers are in control, you can bet that Israel ain’t gonna be on many peoples’ list of allies.
