fossphi, in Mull vs Fennec

Maybe off topic but what’s the issue with using standard Firefox? Also on f-droid through Fennec/FF updater.

With things as dicey as browsers, I would rather have fewer patches and a certified version. These forks never seemed very reliable to me

possiblylinux127, in [Discussion] How do you feel about age verification on Porn sites?

Age verification is silly and can be easily bypassed. What we should do is just block adult content by default. Most content people want to see is not adult oriented anyway. If someone wants that they can do that at home by just turning off the filters.

possiblylinux127, in A Guide to PGP Encryption on Windows

I have two thoughts on this:

First off you shouldn’t be using windows if you care about privacy and freedom. Its just not good for that.

Second off I wish gpg wasn’t dependent on a single key. If your key is compromised your screwed. You are better off using a messager with better security if you can like session, simplex chat, Jami and a few others.

Not everyone can do everything at once, and doing something is better than doing nothing at all.

VolunTerry,

I agree with both of you above. It’s a journey and starts somewhere, but he’s not wrong with the recommendations, they may just be farther down the road for someone starting out.

possiblylinux127, in Can Apps Share Data Back n Forth on GrapheneOS?

This is why I don’t like Graphene os. Its encourages using proprietary apps that over Foss. With a Foss camera app from F-droid you don’t need play services and the app with do exactly what its meant to do, nothing more.

Gooey0210, (edited )

There’s gos’ camera already preinstalled, no need to download anything 🫣

They discourage fdroid because it’s not very secure, until it ever gets better

There’s the secure Accrescent, but it has almost no apps in it

(Yeah, but actually you can just use obtainium, this is probably the future)

VolunTerry, (edited )

I’d like to see some evidence that F-Droid is less secure (or privacy respecting) than using the big Gs playstore or services, which many, if not most, playstore apps depend on to function.

I mean this sincerely and respectfully. I’d love to look onto it.

Because in my current opinion and approach, if you vet your apps and practice good digital hygiene, then FOSS>GOOGL/Alphabet for nearly everything from a privacy and security perspective.

Edit: if I misunderstood and you were saying don’t use G playstore or Aurora AND don’t use F-Droid, then may I ask where are you getting your apps, other than directly from the devs page or github and so on?

techognito,
@techognito@lemmy.world avatar

There is an app called Obtainium. This allows downloading signed apps directly from source

possiblylinux127,

For that to work you need to know the app exists first. I also like to look at F-droids anti feature list.

VolunTerry,

Me too, but good to know I can check that at F-Droid and then fetch from source if I want. Best of both.

VolunTerry,

Thanks!

MagneticFusion,

Here is one brief video explaining some of F Droids security issues: youtu.be/lAbgeJau3eE&t=305piped link: piped.video/watch?v=lAbgeJau3eE&t=314

techognito,
@techognito@lemmy.world avatar

That is old(ish) news. And f-droid have since then implemented allowing reproducible builds

which allows for developer signed keys to be used for the APK

possiblylinux127,

Keep in mind that the security issues were addressed a while back. It was in a blog post.

VolunTerry,

Thank you for providing some info for discussion MagneticFusion.

Gooey0210,

I’m a little bit too late 🤪

I personally don’t use anything of google, browsing and trying apps from fdroid, and have obtainium for the ones I usually use

But Graphene’s approach is all about security, and privacy only after it So they recommend the most secure options first, and don’t recommend minor options So, their current opinion on fdroid that it’s less secure than googlag’s store, so a more secure option would be googlag, or that second store that has 3 apps in it

But it’s for “marketplace” apps, so obtainium not in the scope, but kinda should be (we just need to rethink where we get our apps from)

VolunTerry,

Good points and makes sense to me. Thanks.

MagneticFusion,

Also to correct you, Google Camera does not need any Play Services installed. The reason I brought up Play Services is because I would need it to be able to get RSC working on Google Messages which I eventually plan on doing once RSC support is added to iOS.

sir_reginald,
@sir_reginald@lemmy.world avatar

by “RSC” do you mean RCS? en.wikipedia.org/…/Rich_Communication_Services

MagneticFusion,

Tf are you on about? I AM looking for a foss camera option. But it is practically non existent. Besides 2, Open Camera and Libre Camera, both of which have a UI from 2012 and Libre Camera lacks a ton of features.

And despite that, GrapheneOS comes with its own open source camera, but there is a reason nobody uses it, it has no features just like the other very limited open source camera apps (Open Camera excluded)

possiblylinux127,

The lineage os camera is pretty good and can be installed outside of lineage os.

MagneticFusion,

I checked it out. Has a nice UI but suffers the same fate as the stock GrapheneOS camera. Lacks basic features such as panoramic photos

para-government tech companies are working as hard on that as possible, it will be soon. It doesn’t even matter if it really works, they’ll just say it does.

Gutless2615, in [Discussion] How do you feel about age verification on Porn sites?

Any so called privacy law that enriches and ensures that age verification data brokers make bank is fundamentally and irrevocably broken.

rbesfe, in [Discussion] How do you feel about age verification on Porn sites?

My first exposure to porn was through sprays in TF2. Kids are gonna see this shit regardless of how much you invade everyone else’s privacy

brygphilomena,

I’m getting flashbacks to Counter Strike. It’s been a long time since I’ve thought of sprays in games.

akilou, in want a youtube discovery alternative

Same problem, interested in the solutions. Using a combo of Grayjay, like new pipe in which I have to subscribe to channels I already know, and YouTube.com in Firefox with sponsor block, specifically for the recommendation engine.

I’ve been liking life with grayjay. No algorithms, no ads, no shorts. It’s like “what if YouTube but not addicting?”

ICastFist, in [Discussion] How do you feel about age verification on Porn sites?
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

Let’s be real, teens, especially males, will actively search for porn. Blocklists can be pointless, because even if you can blacklist 160k pornhub clones, they can just join a discord or telegram server instead.

Frankly, I think parents should just make them aware that just like cinema, those videos are for show, not for “trying at home”. Parents should tell them that if they ever expect sex to be like in the porn they consume, they’ll be sorely disappointed. Most of it is faker than reality tv. Oh, it can also make boys get really fucking insecure, especially about their own size.

Microw,

That’s not a problem in my opinion. Obviously teens are a big demographic for big sites like pornhub. And they will consume porn in one way or another. I would love it if they used more ethical porn platforms, but whatever it is it is.

The issue with these sites has always been that they will blast videos into your face as soon as you open the website, without the usual barrier to register first. And that makes it a problem for any child between 5 and 11 years old who might stumble onto that page because someone is pulling a prank or whatever. The un-natural, violent kind of porn promoted by sites like Pornhub should not be broadcasted into the minds of actually small children.

Shelbyeileen, in Verizon Gave Her Data to a Stalker. ‘This Has Completely Changed My Life’
@Shelbyeileen@lemmy.world avatar

I knew instantly that she, like myself, was an adult content creator, because this keeps happening to women online; but especially to SWers.

I had a guy who wouldn’t take no for an answer and he stalked down and threatened my grandma. I had to get the police involved.

Meg Turney, her stalker learned she was in a relationship, and he broke into their home with a gun ready to kill them.

There was a story of a singer in Japan whose stalker found her location through the reflection in her eye, went to her house, and sexually assaulted her!

Anytime anyone says it’s so easy to make money with digital sex work, I tell them stories like this. We have to put our photos out there to advertise, we have to show interest in our supporters, we need to traverse so carefully… our lives might be on the line.

fossphi, in want a youtube discovery alternative

I sometimes enable the recommended videos in newpipe just to see what’s out there, it’s mostly shite, though. For me what worked was asking people. Sometimes my friends, but more often, hanging out in online communities/forums relevant to my interests gave me a bunch of good channel suggestions :)

sio2, in BVG out here recommending the best 2FA Apps!

I reccommend ente auth. privacyguides.org added it a while ago.

Substance_P, (edited ) in Anyone know how to get multiple Protonmail free tier accounts on an android phone?

They are a great company and are worth supporting in my opinion, they do care about privacy, are based in Switzerland of which was chosen as the location for its strong privacy laws and commitment to protecting user data.

Edit: they just emailed me announcing that they have a 40% end of year sale right now. (absolutely not affiliated)

I wish they could just sell email addresses for those that are hard up for money, but for me, I ended up paying for the mid-tier package for aforementioned reasons.
