haui_lemmy, in So SBCs are shit now? Anything I can do with my collection of Pis and old routers?

I have a pi which I use as an apple tv/firestick alternative which works very well and would be pretty pointless with a larger pc imo. Servers I dont do with small PIs but indeed old computers. I think all kinds of ultra movable devices will be good with PI and derivatives.

For folks that want to get into it: pine64 is open source but I havent tried it yet. Thinking of it though. They even have a watch.

possiblylinux127, (edited )

The two things to keep in mind with pine64 is that they ship hardware before the software is ready and because they are less popular there is less support.

I like there hardware but its just something to keep in mind. The good news is that to my knowledge all of their single board computers can run regular linux.

haui_lemmy,

Thanks for mentioning that. Iirc they use risc-v chips and linux supports it so it should work I guess. Will check it out.

possiblylinux127,

If you are unsure what to get definitely don’t get Risc-v as the user land software is not well supported.

I would get a rockpro64

haui_lemmy,

I‘m hearing mixed things about risc-v. Its community supported. Do you have experience with the shortcomings?

possiblylinux127,

The main shortcoming is that the software hasn’t matured yet. Its true you could use Debian or Gentoo and get a decent machine but I would hold off using it for anything important. You won’t find Risc-V images on docker hub and flathub only barely has arm support.

haui_lemmy,

Got it. So except the OS, software is going to be pretty tough. Would that mean installing from source still works or not?

possiblylinux127,

It should

haui_lemmy,

Ok. Thanks. :)

cypherpunks, in Is there an easy way to stream full bluray disc rips with menus and features over the network to my TV
@cypherpunks@lemmy.ml avatar

There is a version of VLC for the Nvidia Shield, but it has a somewhat irritating UI and I don’t know if it can actually read the menus like the desktop version can.

i_am_not_a_robot,

The Android version of VLC can play DVDs with menus, which is weird because the desktop version can’t out of the box for legal reasons.

MeatsOfRage, (edited )

Yea I tried this, I think the app versions of VLC only open single files, they didn’t port the open disc feature.

solrize, in Alternative to certbot for acquiring ssl certificates to use with nginx.

I used dehydrated for a while. It’s a quite simple python script iirc. It’s on github someplace.

If your domain registrar is porkbun and you use their DNS hosting, they can generate wildcard certificates for you. It is pretty convenient though a little bit scary, since they generate your key pair and retrieve the cert from letsencrypt. But, since they run your DNS, they could do almost the same thing without you even knowing.

ulu_mulu, in Alternative to certbot for acquiring ssl certificates to use with nginx.

What CA are you getting your certificates from?

If Let’s Encrypt, have you checked their alternative methods to certbot?

@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

Yea I’m using let’s encrypt. Juet wanted to hear opinions from people who are probably more experienced than me.

TrickDacy, in So SBCs are shit now? Anything I can do with my collection of Pis and old routers?
@TrickDacy@lemmy.world avatar

I missed this sentiment. Just bought my first RPI (5) and it’s a neat little toy. I have some pretty specific requirements I’ll have to work toward but I like tinkering with it. The size, price and low power consumption beat any of the mini PCs I found. Then again I’m probably out of the loop

luna, in So SBCs are shit now? Anything I can do with my collection of Pis and old routers?
@luna@lemmy.catgirl.biz avatar

Sbcs are neat and raspi is still cool imo, i guess people just started to realise that mini x86s exist too and the recent releases with 6, 8, 12, cores are enticing to a group of people. Really depends on what you want to do, right tool for the right job etc

FutileRecipe, (edited )

I guess people just started to realise that mini x86s exist too

People always knew x86s existed. I think the main culprit is the price gap between them and Pis is decreasing. Pis used to be around $35, which has skyrocketed to 3-5x MSRP, plus they were unavailable for a long time. Now the Pi’s performance to price ratio isn’t justifiable to most, so people pay a little more for the x86 but get so much more capability.

notfromhere, in So SBCs are shit now? Anything I can do with my collection of Pis and old routers?

I have a small cluster of Pis running k3s kubernetes and running several services for my household. Yea they could all run on a single beefy server but I had fun learning it all.

CaptainBasculin, in So SBCs are shit now? Anything I can do with my collection of Pis and old routers?

If you’re not doing stuff with them; not much point.

Since these devices have ARM processors, they can be embedded to places that doesn’t need high power and contain smaller volume; unlike PCs. You can host your a Jellyfin server on one, host a pi-hole so that you filter out every internet traffic from ads on another. Maybe a small FTP server that you can use as cloud storage?

exu, in What is your prefered way to get audiobooks/podcasts/ebooks for your audiobookshelf?

Sadly Audible and removing DRM with ffmpeg.

MorganCS, in XPipe status update: New scripting system, advanced SSH support, performance improvements, and many bug fixes

Great software! And it keeps improving.

mlaga97, in Grocery shopping apps

My partner and I use a pinned issue as our grocery list on our git repo for managing our household. All running on top of a self-hosted gitea instance.

Great for being able to create git issues for honey-dos as well as having automations for creating issues for recurring tasks.

“Hey we need to take X to the vet for Y sometime next week” “Oh yeah, can you go ahead and put in a ticket?” Amd vice versa

Can’t wait to tell my wife she has to create a merge request to change our plans for tonight. 😉

i went through a bunch of these and eventually settled on trilium

homegrowntechie,

This. Save yourself some time and just go with Trillium. It does not have a native mobile app yet, but when it does, there’ll be nothing to compare! :P

jenny_ball,
@jenny_ball@lemmy.world avatar

i sort of made the native app myself using an android app called hermit that is meant for that kind of thing.

Scew, in What is your prefered way to get audiobooks/podcasts/ebooks for your audiobookshelf?
@Scew@lemmy.world avatar

I find them online and use javascript to rip them into a text file and use @Voice premium on android to read/listen to the text files. I got the premium @Voice because I didn’t realize how much of a staple having an app that can read most types of files was going to be.

luna, in Stargate branded public Matrix Server (beta)

bradboimler,

Zero signups so far so no one really interested and kinda knew that mainly for personal use.

bradboimler, (edited )
@bradboimler@startrek.website avatar

Also because of this comment registration is temporary disabled while I disable rooms and spaces, and community’s so it will be messenger/group messages only. More limits may be imposed not sure yet still reading all the options in the docs. Also looking into other methods like disabling encryption on group chats if even possible to deter this.

luna,
@luna@lemmy.catgirl.biz avatar

I wanted to start a community, including a matrix server for chatting, but public signups cause some “undesirables” to sign up and when I finally figured out what rooms they joined and what they were posting (unencrypted) I had to nope out of the whole project over night. They seem to scan the federated network for public instances with open registrations and then do shit like this. It’s a shame but the only community effort I could see myself doing in the future would need to be friend-to-friend networks or invite only or something like that…

bradboimler, (edited )
@bradboimler@startrek.website avatar

Yeah looking into all of this now I might move towards a invite only and keep groups community’s etc unencrypted and moderate them all. Or make community’s etc only allowed with admin approval. UPDATE: we are now invite only working on generating some invite codes if anyone is interested comment below.

starkzarn, in Grocery shopping apps

Ran into a similar conundrum. We use mealie for recipe management and occasionally meal planning, but the shopping list is clunky. We resorted to just making a list on a card in Planks. Not purpose-built, but it has worked rather well for us.
