I’m not sure if this will entirely make sense, but do you believe there could be some kind of feature to authenticate with a specific instance, but make your ‘home’ instance another?

In other words, to create your account on lemmy.ml, but visit lemmy.world and be signed into your account, effectively changing what your home page and ‘local’ looks like without needing to subscribe to all communities on another instance if you’re interested in having them curate your feed? Piped has something like this, where you auth with one server, but proxy video through another.

The reason I ask is that this helps to get around tricky defederation situations and can improve privacy. Perhaps I want to auth from a server I trust more with my data, but I want to make .world or .ml my home page because they have more content that is relevant to me and that helps me discover it. Or I want to auth from lemmy.ml so I have access to instances that were defederated from .world, meaning I can still use them as my ‘home page’ without needing to actually make an account there.

First, I want to say thank you for the incredible job you already have done in this area. However, do you have any thoughts on further improving some fundamental Lemmy UX painpoints? Examples such as:

• Tagging users across instances
• Linking communities across instances
• Finding communities across instances

When do we get advanced moderation features? And for example the ability to block all users from a single instance to prevent for example brigading? I mean for the user, so we don’t have to rely on defederation so much.

Are you planning to revamp defederation? I mean it’s rather complicated the way it works and the triangle that is the user’s instance, the other user’s instance and the instance the community is located.

What about features like automatically kicking of moderators / revoking their ownership. In the early days of the Reddit exodus, some people reserved lots of communities just so they’d be the owner of the community, but they don’t do anything with it. I think admins mostly already dealt with that. But there are ideas floating around to migitate for things like that and other common annoyances. I think good moderation is key (and the tools that go with that and the whole architecture of the platform should favor a good atmosphere.)

In the past imgbb was used to post CSAM to some communities so some instances remove links to images hosted on it (or I guess ban the user in the instance you were on)

Edit: seems like that was lemmy.world, reach out to their community team and ask to be unbanned if you want your account unbanned, seems like they did that for someone else in the past

The admin of Blahaj is openly interested in exposing trans people’s alt accounts and outing them on their mains. And somehow it’s the biggest trans instance. We need a community and admin reaction in favour of defederating people who do that.

You need to search them to make them available to your instance. You can also use lemmony or lemmy community seeder to automate it if you care enough.

With startrek.website we’d hoped creating a Star Trek themed instance might encourage other ex-moderators to start topic-specific instances too, and it would kick off a flourishing of myriad communities run by devoted moderators, a Lemmyverse so diverse and inspiring that not even Reddit could further justify it’s own existence in the presence of such an obviously superior system.

Instead it turned out “Star Trek and Linux” was enough to satisfy nearly everyone’s tastes (both subtle and gross).

Omg, thanks! I noticed that it had hit a million recently, and I was thinking about writing up a post to commemorate it and maybe share some thoughts about my experience posting like a madman on the fediverse for 6-7 months so far. If I do, it’ll probably be on the c/fediverse community, unless anyone can think of a more fitting one.

I’m also surprised it’s still visible! My instance upgraded to 0.19 recently, which supposedly takes away the upvote count from your profile view. I was secretly hoping to make it to one million before the upgrade happened… Lol

I had not realised this before, that there are multiple versions of the same community on different instances. For example there are multiple meme communities on different instances.

I wonder how this affects engagement considering that although there might be one large community there are several smaller ones. Perhaps not everyone assumes that there’s a larger community on a different instance.

Also how does this affect niche communities where it may be that due to high fragmentation these communities might seem unusually small.

Further, if these niche communities remain unusually smaller than there Reddit counter parts would users leave do to perhaps lack of content versus their Reddit counter parts.

This is kind of a chicken and egg - users migrate or engage the more activity there is and it may lead to discouragement if their first impression is that there isn’t content.

I don’t know I’m probably rambling and don’t know what I’m talking about.

I think concerns come in two flavours:

1. Privacy/security: Cloudflare terminates HTTPS, which means they decrypt your data on their side (e.g. browser to cloudflare section) then re-encrypt for the second part (cloudflare to server). They can therefore read your traffic, including passwords. Depending on your threat model, this might be a concern or it might not. A counterpoint is that Cloudflare helps protect your service from bad actors, so it could be seen to increase security.
2. Cloudflare is centralised. The sidebar of this community states “A place to share alternatives to popular online services that can be self-hosted without giving up privacy or locking you into a service you don’t control.”, and Cloudflare is for sure a service you don’t control, and arguably you’re locked into it if you can’t access your stuff without it. Some people think Coudflare goes against the ethos of self-hosting.

With that said, you’ll find several large lemmy instances (and many small ones) use cloudflare. While you’ll easily find people against its use, you’ll find many more people in the self-hosted community using it because it’s (typically) free and it works. If you want to use it, and you’re ok with the above, then go ahead.

If Beehaw chooses to leave the fediverse and defederate everyone, I wish them all the best, but I know I personally will not be joining.

I’ve had enough of walled gardens and private spaces, I chose the fediverse because Reddit started forcing decisions I didn’t like, like which apps I could use or how I interact with the communities I enjoy. The fediverse allows me the choice to choose what communities I want to subscribe to on my own terms, and that isn’t something I want to let go of easily.

There are downsides, there is noise, but that’s the role of hosting social media. It’s inevitable that as a community grows with more people who enjoy it, that there will also be people who want to tear it down. To me, that’s just a fact of the internet.

I’ll be disappointed, Beehaw is what inspired me to set up my instance and my communities and nurture my tiny instance - but I still believe in the fediverse. Welcoming differing opinions - not shutting them out.

So I got curious and did a little digging (and from what I’ve seen this comment/post may be removed by the mod?).

And it has lead to the creation of this community (lemmy.world/c/tenforward) … on which see this welcome message (lemmy.world/post/10461985) from @Stamets who used to be a regular poster here and is the author of comment above.

TLDR: some don’t like the moderation here, which is done by a single mod, and have gone and made their own community over on lemmy.world.

If this drama was real and the instance admins knew about it, I think I’d be happy to conclude that the instance admins did a bad job here given their status as a star trek instance. If there was a split amongst Risa people and its mod, then create another community (with TenForward being a great name for it) with a different moderator and let them co-exist as part of the same federation.

Now there’s probably some unnecessary fracturing (which is fine, that’s what the fediverse is all about in the end) … and I can’t help but wonder if the admins here are maybe a tad too much used to a reddit culture of allowing mods and admins get away with things … which is of course me being rather quick to judge, I can only speculate here clearly, but still … kinda funny to see.
