Some file managers might add the +x automatically if you choose to run the binary through the desktop environment (not the terminal)… or ask you if you’d like to mark the file as an executable (i.e. add +x to permissions).
You can’t do it the same way with tar, what are you gonna execute, tar is neither a script or an ELF binary. It’s like asking for a zip file to be executable, doesn’t make sense. You can change the extension to .exe, but it won’t run, it’s not an exe, no MZ header, nothing 🤷.

Void. The speed difference is unmeasurable, especially when using old equipment. Plus it still supports x86. If you’re used to the terminal, you won’t notice a difference, trust me… except a lot more speed and less RAM usage.
The only thing Lemmy has taught me so far is that Ubuntu sucks and the only truly honorable choice is to quit my job and stop speaking to my family so that I can devote my life to installing drivers on unstable Arch.
Everything works pretty much out of the box in Void. Hardware doesn’t work? Try installing some of the firmware binary blobs (firmware-intel, firmware-broadcom, etc.). Check the hardware manufacturer and model with lspci or lsusb (depending on how the hardware is connected to the PC). 99% of the time, the thing works after firmware packages are installed 👍.

Hey, I read man pages all that time, Vi/Vim are just unreasonably complicated. Sure, those commands had sense when there were no key modifiers available on keyboards, but in this day and age, to not at least add some shortcuts to be part of the program by default… thanks, but if I have to read a man page to exit a terminal text editor, that’s just not really my cup of tea.
