NOw it’s Disney+ for Star Wars and Paramount+ for Star Trek. I was excited to find the trove of new Star Trek series the Pat for various reasons I didn’t watch in several years

I’m kind of afraid to know the answer about whether I was fooled by marketing …… when CBS tried to kick off their own personal streaming service with the new Star Treks, I refused to play that game. You’re not getting a subscription for every tv network. Now that the service is Paramount+, I’ll pay (for a while) to also get a studio’s worth of new and old movies. Please tell me there’s a real difference, and I wasn’t just fooled by re-marketing the same old shit

AA5B, to lemmyshitpost in And this is why I no longer have cable.

Yeah, that’s my brother. Every time I visit, he seems to have some new reality show he watches. Somehow he’s always surprised I’ve never heard of I t and am not interested in it.

It’s always on in the background and no one pays attention unless the ice starts cracking under the truck, or the survivalist misses his airdrop, or some manufactured drama hit the fishing boat or whatever. He’s a pretty active guy, so I’ll bet most of the time these reality shows are going, there’s no one even in the room

Unfortunately we’ll probably have to battle contracts again before that happens. As more of us rebel against the insanity by switching what services we subscribe to every couple of months, they’ll have to try to prevent frequent switching. for cable, they always pushed long term contracts and we had no choice. I’m not getting locked into a long term contract unless it’s a serious discount, and even then I realize it’s mostly a trap to get your credit card on auto-renew.

It’s not that clearcut: they have various tricks to keep it alive, if they know where you are. This is why you never admit to a debt nor pay the token amount they offer; both are tricking you into legally claiming responsibility, so they can keep the debt alive

Doesn’t have to be that old, man: my first is in college now. I no longer consume enough for Costco to be a good value, but you bet that if he mentions he wants something, I’m on my way to Costco

A couple decades ago, there was a scandal in, I think, Chicago. They used red light cameras but then kept cutting the timing of the yellow lights, turning it into a revenue generating exercise. People remember.

AA5B, to risa in Traffic lights

That’s the legal purpose of a yellow light, yes. However people have been getting worse and worse with actually following it. Now on green I always wait a few seconds for some yahoo to come flying through on the side street claiming he made it on yellow

AA5B, to movies in Box Office: ‘The Marvels’ Gets Grounded With MCU’s Second-Lowest Opening Day Ever

Interesting to see the general negative impressions contrasted with the other column here saying how great it is.

I’m still deciding whether to see it in theaters - I’m a huge fan of the Marvel universe and still want more superhero movies. Iman Vellani does a great job with an excellent character, and I loved how the story connected with her culture. Fantastic. However Captain Marvel was pretty much a non-entity and we had no idea who Monica Rambeau will be yet - I hope the movie gave some much needed character development

Many years ago, I worked for a software company that included code escrow for our customers. If something happened to is, they could unlock the code and support it themselves.

It can be done, but probably only is in industries with strong companies for customers

AA5B, to mildlyinteresting in Oil prices crashed 19% from their peaks—here's why

I’m looking for the (long, drawn out) end of the gasoline industry, where we enter a virtuous cycle of:

  • reduced demand
  • lower prices
  • a few fossil fuel companies cut back or go out of business
  • reduced supply
  • higher prices
  • more usages switch to renewables
  • repeat
AA5B, (edited ) to upliftingnews in Solar cell prices plunge to all-time low

That’s seems ridiculous: where are you? Are you sure that’s just solar, or would it also include batteries, maybe a “solar roof”, instead of solar on the roof? As far as I know, most of the systems (in us at least) are designed for shingled roofs: do you have tiles or slate, or something?

Where I live in the northeast us, it’s typically $20-30k for solar panels on my roof, only. I don’t need batteries because I’d stay grid-tied and my roof is pretty new. That’s still ridiculously expensive and beyond any reasonable payback but state incentives make it much more reasonable. They claim 4-7 years payback but since I can’t follow their math, it goes into the bin with the rest of advertising hogwash

AA5B, to upliftingnews in UN approves Gaza truce [video]

History shows this is the only ending, and will end nothing.

Once Israel decides they have done enough to kill Hamas leaders and destroy resources in retribution for the attack, murder, kidnapping of their citizens, they’ll accept the UN truce, and UN/US will bring in aid to Palestinians. Israel will build up the walls, and separation to try to prevent this from happening again, and Mossad will be more active hunting down Hamas. Meanwhile Palestinians will recover, remembering their losses, suffering under increased repression, and the cycle of desperation and violence starts again.

Then to expand the long bloody history of the area, assuming there is proof of Iranian involvement, no one wants a war, but we’ll likely see the odd bit of assassinations and exploding factories or ports

As always, the only winner is the defense industry
