AVincentInSpace,

no longer relies on data mining customers to maximize ad effectiveness

You’re an idiot if you believe they won’t do that anyway.

Because – and this might be a hot take – I don’t think it should be socially acceptable to bring up a recent national tragedy as a fucking punchline

We’ve been voting. We’re trying to get the rules changed and we’re getting stonewalled by people who only listen to media that makes up reasons for them to hate things that would be good for the masses because it would be bad for a few people at the top and I’m sick to fucking death of people making fun of us for it and treating actual dying children as some sort of own. For Christ’s sake, have some fucking empathy. None of us, not even the furthest-right conservatives, think this is okay, and we’re trying to do something about it, and it doesn’t help when you’re like “haha look at all the dead children, isn’t it funny how stupid Americans are”

AVincentInSpace,

Wayfire seems perfectly capable of rotating apps without them being aware of it

AVincentInSpace, (edited )
  1. install Wayfire
  2. Ctrl+Super+right click a window and drag
  3. ???
  4. profit
AVincentInSpace,

Hello fellow Jerboa user!

Open source Lemmy clients ftw!

AVincentInSpace,

Maybe they meant your account is 915 days old as of this year?

AVincentInSpace,

Then you don’t have to worry about accidentally doing

did you know that if you type this number into the default Android dialer app, the call button will flash red and blue

(does not work on phones that provide their own dialer such as Samsung but nevertheless a cool easter egg)

AVincentInSpace,

What if we just didn’t build a ceiling and called it the industrial aesthetic?

Hate joints like this.

Aren’t pigs in a blanket when you wrap a sausage in a pancake? Hence, you know, pigs?

AVincentInSpace,

Because they didn’t like that bash was GPL

AVincentInSpace,

it always kinda bugs me that people lose their minds over Pluto but can’t name even one of the other four dwarf planets in our solar system

AVincentInSpace,

If I were to steal cable, I would be using the cable company’s resources to deliver content to my house without paying for it. If I were to set up an inductor under a power line to steal power, I would be depriving the power company of power they could have sold to somebody else without giving them anything in return.

When I torrent something, I don’t even put any additional load on Netflix’s servers. With their current monetization scheme I don’t even make the show’s producers any less money.

yeah, snaps, that’s the only thing holding Ubuntu back

not dpkg and by extension apt being a flaming dumpster fire that will corrupt the package database if you look at it funny and there being no way out of that other than an OS reinstall

not the fact that there are zero tools for managing dependencies when building a program from source and you’re entirely on your own when it comes to what *-dev packages you need to install

not the fact that Ubuntu is one of only two distros out of the hundreds that are out there where you can’t use the computer while it’s installing updates

not Canonical’s general policy of “hey, this technology seems pretty cool, let’s find out whether it’s good or not by forcing it on all our users and seeing if they complain” (see: miri display server, cinnamon desktop, and of course snaps)

not the fact that there are ADS IN THE GODDAMN TERMINAL

not the fact that it’s a Linux distro that thinks it’s smarter than you and does something other than what you told it to based on what it thinks you meant (see: apt install firefox installing the snap) which IMO negates one of the primary reasons to use Linux

no it’s snaps

snaps are the problem

It’s not systemd doing all the things completely unrelated to system initialization that it does that I have a problem with. It’s systemd doing them worse than the existing tools that do those things that the systemd equivalents replace and Lennart Poettering being completely unable to fathom why anyone would ever want to use any piece of software other than his. systemd talks big game about being modular, but makes breaking changes to how those modules communicate without warning anyone, so if you dare to be a “systemd hater” as he calls them and replace one of those modules with an equivalent he isn’t involved with, Heaven help you when he breaks the API of systemd that they hook into and the developers of your equivalent scramble to implement the binary protocol he thought up yesterday so that their alternative continues to work.

I don’t want software on my system that is managed like that. It’s the same reason I prefer Firefox over anything Chromium based.

AVincentInSpace,

Borderline impossible if you aren’t using a distro designed with that in mind. Pretty much everything that isn’t a program you directly start (e.g. sound system, desktop environment, bluetooth daemon etc.) either only provide a systemd unit to start them (which you’ll have to manually translate into e.g. a shell script if you want it to work with your new init system) or is entirely reliant on systemd to function.

Your choices of distro if you don’t want systemd are Debian, Void, Artix, and Gentoo, and afaik that’s about it.

Replacing components of the systemd suite (e.g. using connman or networkmanager instead of systemd-networkd) isn’t actually that bad as long as your DE has support for them, but replacing systemd itself is something you are building your entire system around.

You use Linux. All Linux users are elitist evangelical douchebags who make every conversation about Linux and how great it is even though it’s worse than Windows. Also you’re probably a criminal, since most Linux users are hackers, and I don’t associate with criminals.

Stereotypes are great, aren’t they?

AVincentInSpace,

let me just make those into links

!fitandnatural
!mmababes

hmm, seems neither of those resolve

AVincentInSpace,

me who uses rEFInd which remembers the last OS chosen and defaults to that: I don’t have such weaknesses

AVincentInSpace,

I missed the part where the person you’re replying to mentioned communism at all.

AVincentInSpace,

ah yes, the subliminal political message inherent in memes showing what my face looks like when i’m lying in bed and drop mh phone
