AbidanYre,

That’s fair. But I’d still be really wary of something with a reputation for eating data just because a user looked at it funny.

AbidanYre,

You can increase the size of a tomb, but IIRC it’s an offline process.

AbidanYre,

That doesn’t help the people who lost data.

And the reports are common enough that it suggests cryptomator should consider making some interface changes.

AbidanYre,

Tomb might fit your needs

AbidanYre,

If it was any company at all except Amazon there would be hope

You won’t be saying that in a couple months when Facebook makes their own announcement.

What's an elegant way of automatically backing up the contents of a large drive to multiple smaller drives that add up to the capacity of the large drive?

So I have a nearly full 4 TB hard drive in my server that I want to make an offline backup of. However, the only spare hard drives I have are a few 500 GB and 1 TB ones, so the entire contents will not fit all at once, but I do have enough total space for it. I also only have one USB hard drive dock so I can only plug in one...

AbidanYre, (edited )

Git annex can do that and keep track of which drive the files are on.

AbidanYre,

The pinebooks are pretty inexpensive. I can’t speak to quality or usability though

Pi-Hole or something else for network ad blocking?

I’ve been aware of pi-hole for a while now, but never bothered with it because I do most web browsing on a laptop where browser extensions like uBlock origin are good enough. However, with multiple streaming services starting to insert adds into my paid subscriptions, I’m looking to upgrade to a network blocker that will...

AbidanYre,

Some chromecasts stop working when you do that.

AbidanYre,

Yeah, I don’t know if it’s all models, but the ultras do at least.

AbidanYre, (edited )

Pi-hole and AdGuard home are both good. It kind of comes down to which UI you like better.

I hope someday we'll find a way to pirated a car (lemmy.world)

In the end, the KIA car company made its cars into subscription models, I really hate this because in the end the car we buy with our own money doesn’t feel like it belongs to us. Should we finally buy an old school car ? so as not to be affected by this subscription models or is there a way to crack the software installed in...

AbidanYre,

mosh with tmux makes it really painful when you have to go back to plain ssh

AbidanYre,

“No wireless? Less space than a Nomad? Lame”

You’ve solved one of the critiques.

XMLTV providers

Are there any good websites that host xmltv info that I can just point my addon to? For context I’m using simple iptv with kodi to stream from my tuner card, through nextpvr, to other tvs in my house via the m3u nextpvr generates. I can see utils to create one but was going for just a web address and have been unable to find...

AbidanYre,

I think all the free ones have shut down at this point.

AbidanYre, (edited )

I have to question their commitment to 480p though.

Sometimes quantity is more important than quality. Hard drives ain’t free.

(Constructively) What is your least favorite distro & why?

I’ve been distrohopping for a while now, and eventually I landed on Arch. Part of the reason I have stuck with it is I think I had a balanced introduction, since I was exposed to both praise and criticism. We often discuss our favorite distros, but I think it’s equally important to talk about the ones that didn’t quite hit...

AbidanYre,

Also, support is only provided for 18.04LTS.

AbidanYre,

Tiny Core runs on my 25 year old Pentium 2.

AbidanYre, (edited )

The Futurama box sets I have are interlaced and the rips look absolutely terrible if I don’t remember to set the playback options right when I watch an episode.

AbidanYre,

The RedHat installer used to have conflicting versions of the origin of the name RedHat.

How to check a direct downloaded mkv file

Decided to dip my toes in so I followed the guide to a website where I can download some content via google drive. Like an idiot, I didn’t research the risks of direct downloads before and so I’m now a bit paranoid. I understand the chances are low and my media player needs to be exploited but is there a way to be certain? A...

AbidanYre,

As long as it opens in a media player instead of trying to run as an executable, you’re probably fine.

  • AbidanYre,

Amazon is definitely not any better if morality is your concern.

For tablets, maybe one of the offerings from Pine64. Not sure how user friendly they are though.

    AbidanYre, (edited )

I’m not saying build your own, I’m saying that if you want to avoid Google for morality reasons, buying a Kindle is, at best, a lateral move.
