ArcaneSlime,

We really need to get a search function so this post can stop being asked 1x daily by some new refugee.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad y’all are here and it moves a lot faster than 2y ago, but every day with this question, and no consensus has been reached. We should all just stop “asking” and let time tell us what we call ourselves, some word will win eventually.

ArcaneSlime,

The “search asklemmy” link that loads my “local” tab in jerboa? Hard to call that “working” imo.

ArcaneSlime,

Well, what I was actually saying was that feature that hasn’t been developed yet would be cool to have.

Are we not allowed to think features that haven’t been developed yet would be good to develop? How does developing happen if one is only allowed to think current features would be good? Sure, “we have community search at home,” but I can’t still want actual McDonald’s fries? They are objectively better than orida, “real search” is better than “bandaid solutions,” honestly I don’t get why there would be pushback against the thought that “we need a real search function,” tbh, you make it sound like they’re developing it or working on it so obviously someone agrees with me, what’re we doing here? Same team dude.

ArcaneSlime,

Fair, but “working” is still a condition I put forth as desireble. Whether or not it not working is asklemmy’s fault or jerboa’s fault, it doesn’t “work.”

I’m not accusing you personally of sabotaging lemmy, we’re all cool here, I’m just saying “a working search function would be a good thing to have inside all communities on lemmy” and I’m not sure why that would be controversial.

ArcaneSlime,

Weeellll when you click that link in jerboa it just loads your “local” tab, so I’m hesitant to call that a “working” search function.

ArcaneSlime,

I think it’s based on the (fahrt fahrt fahrt auf den) Autobahn. Now, I’m not german so I could be wrong, but here’s what wikipedia says regarding speed limits on the autobahn:

Much of the system has no speed limit for some classes of vehicles.[1] However, limits are posted and enforced in areas that are urbanised, substandard, accident-prone, or under construction. On speed-unrestricted stretches, an advisory speed limit (Richtgeschwindigkeit) of 130 kilometres per hour (81 mph) applies.[2] While driving faster is not illegal in the absence of a speed limit, it can cause an increased liability in the case of a collision (which mandatory auto insurance has to cover); courts have ruled that an “ideal driver” who is exempt from absolute liability for “inevitable” tort under the law would not exceed Richtgeschwindigkeit.

So, it certainly seems there is a basis for the jokes, even if they aren’t 100% historically accurate.

ArcaneSlime,

Tbh that should be expected. It’s always easier to convince someone to use an option that already exists and is observably better than their current situation than it is to convince them to support a theoretical change that will take place in the future if we inconvenience them now. That’s just how “humans” work.

ArcaneSlime, (edited )

If the EV last for more than about 5 years, it was worth it.

This is the crux of the joke, the joke being that I am too poor to afford a car every five years, which subverts the expectation of “what you were actually talking about.”

I even said “I know that isn’t what you meant but it made me chuckle.” You really didn’t get the joke?

That says more about you being a dipshit than it does me, frankly, considering I literally told you it was a joke.

Also you’re rude.

ArcaneSlime,

…except not, how rich are you that buying a new car every 5yr is viable?! I need longer than “about 5yr!”

I know that’s not what you meant but it made me chuckle.

ArcaneSlime,

Jeez, buncha moneybags around here that don’t like a joke, huh?

What job forces people to lease new cars? Sounds like the job should be providing them if it’s gonna be like that, like they do with cell phones they require you to use as “work phones.”

ArcaneSlime,

To add: despite how you feel ideologically about this, “the court system” does not care how much you downvote it.

Some questions about Soulseek

Hello pirates! I’ve recently started high school, which means that I now get money from the state, which also means that my parents no longer pay for my Spotify premium. I could probably afford it, but I’d rather save my money, so I’ve been looking into different ways of obtaining music for free....

ArcaneSlime,

Because soulseek requires port forwarding.

If your port isn’t forwarded you can only connect to those who’s port is forwarded, effectively locking yourself out of peers who also don’t have a port forwarded as well.

ArcaneSlime,

I’d say yes VPN, even if piracy were legal I don’t need my peers knowing my IP. For slsk port forwarding is more important than it is for torrenting as well, so I’d reccomend one that lets you do that, like AirVPN (who I will also soon be switching to, Mullvad the one I have now recently removed port forwarding, I’m just too poor to switch yet) or protonvpn.
