Why are redditors like this?

I made a post on r/civ (Civilization games subreddit) showing a really funky shaped randomly generated river I saw and most comments were fine but one guy was convinced that I went through the comparatively monumental effort of opening the map editor and changing the river for karma, as opposed to just starting the game and...

Auzy,

I went to Reddit today and in a subreddit, they were literally joking about firebombing someone and how it would be disappointing if someone did it.

Reddit is basically truth social 2.0 at this point

Auzy, (edited )

Doesn’t help on Reddit that everyone on Facebook uses it and feels like it’s full of lobbyists getting paid to promote their causes in a dodgy way

Auzy, (edited )

I don’t think honestly he gets enough credit.

If you check SystemD, its a HUGE step up, which is why everyone is using it now (whereas, the old scripts had race conditions, were a pain to write and other issues). Anyone who has written both can tell you how much better things are now…

The fact this issue is happening on both Pipewire and Pulseaudio also suggests it’s more likely a bug in the drivers… It might not be obvious on ALSA directly, but that doesn’t mean an issue doesn’t exist there…

And honestly, the situation before PulseAudio was awful. Audio not working was a common issue, and low latency audio was the least of anyone’s problems. Whereas, these days, because of Pulseaudio, even gaming is a thing now (back then, I even saw issues on tuxracer, and Unreal tournament back in the days).

In regards to setup, most distributions will handle that anyway I’m guessing. So not sure why the configuration process should matter unless you’re in Arch or Slackware? As long as the distribution handles it, it shouldn’t matter. It’d really a non-issue honestly.

I do a lot of middleware development and we’re regularly blamed by users for bugs/problems upstream too (which is why we’ve now added a huge amount of enduser diagnostics/metrics in our products which has made it more obvious the issues aren’t related to us). In practice, very few people have issues with Pulseaudio (I haven’t seen issues since launch). Sometimes as well, keep in mind it can be the sound interface (especially if its USB)

Every time I’ve gone back to Reddit, I’ve just seen the local communities I used to like getting incredibly right wing with the increasing number of wolf whistles in the comments. Or pro weed nonsense

And honestly, it just felt like doom scrolling and a waste of time. It has grown now to the point it’s just basically the Facebook crowd.

Lemmy is sufficiently busy, and much better quality. And there is more to think about when reading comments

Auzy,

if it is for a small shop, whatever you’re used to.

For mass deployment, you’ll want to probably use something with proper support

Auzy,

Was on Reddit today, and in r/Melbourne they were joking about firebombing someone.

Reddit was always a cesspool, but now without as much moderation, it’s gotten far worse (can’t even report it without an account).

Here in Australia, you can literally file your tax now for free in a few clicks using the government website. If you wait a few weeks, everything for most people is prefilled except deductions

It’s absolutely awesome

Auzy, (edited )

Screw the movie theatres anyway… Here in Australia, there are two big ones (Hoyts and Village), and both screw patrons by doing things like charging patrons extra money for booking online.

In fact, they ruined every joke in the simpsons movie for me (except one) by allowing ads to use clips from the movie. By 45mins of ads, every joke was ruined.

I really wish the big theatres here would f off, and get replaced entirely by small ones. I don’t pay for 40mins of sh***y coca cola ads.

I no longer go at all. It’s not a good experience, and its not even a good place to take a date

Auzy,

Doesn’t make sense at all.

I keep seeing Redhat used an example, but they contribute a HUGE amount a source code and projects… Pipewire, systemd, rpm, DBUS and even the main XML addon for VSCode, etc.

I don’t think people realise how much poop linux would be swimming in if they went bankrupt…

Redhat are literally one of the big reasons why Linux is so seamless these days, and they’re solving a lot of the big problems. And from my understanding, they still contribute the code seperately anyway.

That being said, I agree money needs to go towards developers. However, a lot of them end up hired at major companies. And I don’t think this is the way to approach it

Auzy,

Funny you say that… Because, for the first half, I genuinely thought you were my housemate

Auzy, (edited )

X11 has it’s own issues (and there are a lot of them, including security)

What features exactly?

Auzy, (edited )

The Paris Mayor? Is this really a major story?

Lots of people have left or silent quit… At this time, its hardly a story anymore honestly

Auzy,

I upvote because I’m on beehaw… and fairly sure I can’t downvote

Auzy,

Honestly, I stopped playing them properly after GTA3

Auzy,

Absolutely was going to mention that one. That was probably my favorite one too… Once they went 3D with GTA3, it was fun too… But really, GTA4 was a similar game ( i didn’t even play that one much). GTA5, literally got bored at the beginning

I’ve noticed on facebook, that every anti-EV clown out there seems to think everyone is towing on a daily basis too.

The irony is, that the people who drive these large trucks are actually the people who tend to require the least towing capacity. In fact, I’ve maybe only ever seen 1 or 2 of those large Utes here in Australia actually tow anything remotely big. And for most tradies, Vans are actually a far better option than Utes anyway (much more secure)

Auzy,

From where I stand internationally though, it seems like a toxic culture too regarding it… Like, apparently, I’m meant to be considered more macho for eating meat somehow… I’m an omnivore, and I’ll eat what I want (the standard of vegetarian food actually seems much higher)

Auzy,

Fortunately, survival of the fittest and anti vaxxers love things like those anti-5g pendants… Many of which are radioactive

Auzy,

Yeah… For people saying COVID is “just the flu”, I had a friend who ended up in hospital with COVID… When I got covid and thought I may have spread it to her (fortunately she got lucky and somehow didn’t get it) , she pretty much started prepacking for hospital.

It’s still a super serious virus, same as the real flu…

Auzy,

Depends on the car. Unfortunately, you always have people who want their cars and motorbikes to be loud (small penis syndrome).

Auzy,

So sick of these big Utes here in Australia.

Never seen a dirty dodge ram ever, and only ever saw one towing anything remotely big. And they’re constantly parking illegally or getting in the way because parking here isn’t designed for them.

Here in Australia, they should be recategorized as heavy vehicles and require a truck license.

And the drivers spend their time trolling on the Internet talking nonsense about EVs generally too

Auzy,

It could be like the old RPM vs DEB arguments. Technically, one could have argued at the time that RPM was explicitly singled out in the Linux Standard base.

However, these days, DEB certainly feels more common (although, from my understanding, Redhat/Slack is big in enterprise, so i’m not actually sure which is more common).
