CancerMancer, to linux in Just install EndeavorOS lol

A lot of new users are coming to Linux not because they like tinkering with their setup but because they are tired of Microsoft tinkering with their setup. For these people Arch will probably never be the answer. That’s ok, we should encourage all Linux adoption and the best way to do that is to start with the simple and familiar.

My director got knocked off in the middle of a call where we were trying to establish requirements with a specialist due to a Windows update. I would have laughed if these guys weren’t worth so much.

Someone who becomes good at something selling goods/services isn’t exactly what I would consider offensive. Consider the guy who did Mouse Trap Monday videos who is now selling his trap commercially: do you have any idea how long he spent testing and reviewing traps to reach a point where that was viable? I suspect he spent thousands of hours on this.

Level1Techs sell basically the only DisplayPort KVM worth a damn, that’s a pretty great offering to have. They don’t bring it up much but it’s there.

CancerMancer, to asklemmy in Why are there so many apps that could be websites?

Progressive Web Apps were supposed to marry these schools of thought, but maybe we hoped for too much because it’s still garbage Chromium under the hood.

Just make everything for maximum interoperability I guess? I recently saw and forgot the name of a system for creating and displaying Github-like pull requests and associated discussions that are sent in via email. A very simple web interface displaying plain-text that could reasonably have been extended any way you like. I am beginning to see the appeal of the plain-text revolution.

Check out Josh Strife Hayes, a very sensible streamer/Youtuber who steers clear of the drama. He and the guy from Pirate Software are my new favourites.

CancerMancer, to piracy in Disney is gouging customers with a near doubling of subscription costs.

I built out the whole stack: clients use jellyfin to watch media and ombi to request it (a friend uses overseerr which seems good too). Internally I’m using sonarr/radarr to manage the library, prowlarr to handle requests, sabnzbd and transmission to download stuff. Altogether this almost completely automates media request and acquisition.

It took a bit of figuring out docker, reverse proxy (using nginx proxy manager), DNS… I got it working though. Someone who has already done networking would find this much simpler but it was new to me.

It’s dangerous because I didn’t know when to stop lol. I started up some game servers for friends, wrote a borg backup script to periodically save all my configs (and game saves) to two cloud storage services, then started spooling up more services…

Man picks lock with skill and tools, not allowed to mention he also sells tools? Shit that would knock out so many YouTubers… LawrenceSystems, NetworkChuck, Level1Techs, pretty much anyone who does electronics or home automation…

Man he has truly become unwatchable as of late, it sucks. That said a lot of other car/hardware channels have lost the plot like AvE

But perhaps I just grew up.

Interesting take. I grew up and swung hard left. I’m a union executive and an advocate for voting reform and a universal basic income. My conservative father and I have the odd clash but surprisingly he’s pretty receptive to all this, and I’ve found many conservative folk are when you don’t treat them like they’re stupid.

over spec PSU

I’ve been building “over spec” since RTX 20XX came out because they keep tripping even platinum PSUs from good brands. I have seen it with 30XX and 40XX GPUs too. This doesn’t usually show up in test loads because they have a consistent load, it’s the intermittent gaming loads that cause transient spikes. Some new PSUs are built to take the spikes but many are not.

CancerMancer, to piracy in I feel like the Steam Deck is the best proof of Gabe Newell's quote that "piracy is a service issue."

It’s not immoral to prioritize feeding and clothing yourself, send it.

You’re underestimating the performance gains from getting rid of the Windows overhead though. Somethings run so much better that it is kind of absurd.

Our corporate devices are set to update and reboot automatically. This is set to happen in the evenings and usually works, but sometimes does not. I leave my device online and powered on 24/7 and still get caught by midday updates that were scheduled for 2am.

CancerMancer, to memes in those ppl...

I didn’t notice much degradation after the 2016 election enshittening. I set to work blocking all the power users and was able to to maintain the post-2016 level of quality right up until I largely quit.

There are two subs I use that have no Lemmy equivalent (one of them probably never will) but otherwise Reddit is just a marginally better StackOverflow for me now.

Also I must admit the Excel subreddit is simply too useful to quit. I’m a damn wizard at this point and these people still surprise me.

CancerMancer, to asklemmy in What's some amazing technology they have in Japan that's very normal to them but would blow our minds here in the US and western world?

Ok that’s too far. You don’t need to get into the bath just because you pissed wtf.
