Contramuffin,

Bought instant noodles in bulk. I could have gotten the cheap, tasteless kind, but I prefer the more expensive Asian ones. Still ends up being much less expensive than groceries anyways. I have a good portion of the pantry filled with just different types of instant noodles, all of which were bought in bulk. I do buy groceries, but I avoid the more expensive foods as much as possible. Just stuff like milk, eggs, spinach, fruits, etc.

I don’t eat instant noodles every day, but if I don’t feel like cooking or if I’m running low on food, I can “supplement” the meal with instant noodles. Having instant noodles as “backup” helps takes a bit of the edge off with regards to grocery spending, although I do admit that I could take more drastic measures to save. Despite living in an area where the cost of living is absurd (one of the highest in the country), I feel somewhat well off in that I can get by with just supplementing my meals with instant noodles every now and then.

Contramuffin,

Pretty partial to Japanese pop myself. I’m learning Japanese partially so i can understand the songs. Yoasobi’s songs are a good general recommendation, I would recommend Yoru ni Kakeru, Gunjou, and Seventeen.

Nerds, I need ideas for my college project that should resemble the below GitHub project - Event Planner. (github.com)

I’m looking for a good idea that should be easy, but unique, and never existed, or maybe not. The web application ought to resemble the GitHub project, however, it should incorporate a distinct concept. Using Next.js and MongoDB....

Contramuffin,

Pro tip: if you want to ask for help, it’s not a good idea to disparage the people who are supposed to help you immediately before you ask for help

Contramuffin,

If you are still doing that, don’t do it. Those takeout containers leak microplastics like crazy

Contramuffin,

I’ve heard that they do, but for certain it must be less than re-using takeout containers.

I, myself, I’ve been avoiding all plastics and using strictly glass where possible

Contramuffin,

Don’t worry, that’s actually perfectly balanced. That’s the mad part

Contramuffin,

I see that someone else already gave the reason why it happens. As for solutions, I think you should consider using a dedicated app. There’s a lot out there. I currently use Thunder on my Android phone

Contramuffin,

First, you can edit the title. You don’t need to offer corrections as a comment.

Second, you’ll need to be a bit more detailed about what exactly is going on. If your screen is going black, then without further details, my first assumption would be that it’s probably your computer breaking in some way, not lemmy.world.

What OS are you using? What do you mean when you say you are using the “lemmy.world Firefox app?”

Contramuffin,

the bacteria Penicillium roqueforti

I don’t think that article knows what a bacterium is. Penicillium is a fungus.

Contramuffin,

Neither side, really, but you can generally be certain that the Republican party is the one most against legalizing marijuana.

Contramuffin,

I think social media has the ability to make things impossible to ignore, things that previously people were able to ignore.

Things such as police brutality, mass shootings, for instance, probably were just as common back then as it is now. But now we’re paying attention to it. I think it’s the same thing here. People have always had a different public and personal life. It would be incredibly odd if someone didn’t. But social media is making people pay attention to the fact that there’s some people whose private lives are ugly, but who try to project a perfect public life anyways.

Contramuffin,

It seems like Google changed the format of their YouTube usernames. I assume usernames need to be unique now, but I don’t know for sure.

In any case, Google automatically added a string of numbers after my username, and I simply haven’t bothered changing it back

Contramuffin,

Whatever rule you set, be transparent about it, be open to feedback about it, and enforce it fairly.

I think most powertripping mods end up being unlikable due to one of several reasons:

  • passes a new rule that people don’t like. Refuses to (or pretends to) listen to feedback when people get upset about it
  • enforces an existing rule more harshly against people they don’t like, often to the point where the mod would first decide that a user should be banned, and then try to find a justification for banning that user. (As opposed to the normal process, where a mod notices rule breaking, and then decides whether the user should be banned)
  • Complementing the previous point, gets into petty arguments. Mods are meant to be the role model of the community, and that inherently means being the “bigger man” basically all the time. You need to be able to take insults and know not to respond.
Contramuffin,

Ah yes. In addition, it’s only polite to refer to yourself as “ore,” and a true gentleman will also refer to everyone with the -chan suffix.

Do you prefer PC or laptop? (freeonlinesurveys.com)

I was having a friendly discussion with someone this morning about PC and Laptops for work/education stuff, he suggested that I could use a chromebook for all this stuff and this would be a good idea and make things easier. I strongly disagreed with this, mainly because I hate laptops, the keyboard and touchpad make me angry and...

Contramuffin,

PC for most of my work, laptop for when I just need to access things from elsewhere. Although, I would never touch a Chromebook. Tried it, was very underwhelmed. IMO chromebooks defeat the purpose of a laptop. What’s the point of portability if you need wifi to use it?

Contramuffin,

Who is saying that Baba is You is ugly? I don’t think I’ve ever heard that opinion. It’s always just been “charming Flash game aesthetic” for me

Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Hi, I am a guy in early thirties with a wife and two kids and whenever I go on youtube it always suggests conservative things like guys dunking on women, ben shapiro reacting to some bullshit, joe rogan, all the works. I almost never allow it to go to that type of video and when I do it is either by accident or by curiosity. My...

Contramuffin,

I would wager a guess that it’s your regular interests. YouTube sees that people who like machining, blacksmithing, etc. have a good chance of also being conservative. You probably are just part of the odd cases where you like those hobbies but aren’t conservative.

Your post raises an interesting point, though: even if YouTube didn’t intend for their algorithm to be a pipeline for radicalism, simply by encouraging engagement and viewership, their algorithm ends up becoming a radicalization pipeline anyways.

Contramuffin,

It sounds like you accidently clicked “move files” instead of “copy files.” I would recommend restoring from your backup that you just made

Contramuffin,

It’s really fine if nobody shows up. If anything, you could always just post or cross post something every once in a while to help the community pick up steam. What you should be concerned about is too many people showing up. The reddit admins (as well as certain sections of redditors, it seems) have forgotten that moderating is pretty tedious and not everyone has the time or energy to spend on moderating. If I were you, make your moderating policy clear from the start and stick to it as objectively as possible. When changes to that policy has to be made, clearly communicate to your community what changes are made and why. Some changes will not be accepted by the community, and you should do your best to remind yourself that it’s not a personal attack on your values if they disagree.

Contramuffin,

First thing to do: reinstall windows. You keep your license, it’s quick, but it removes all the bloatware on your computer

Contramuffin,

To be clear, lemmy.world isn’t federating with Threads. They’re taking the wait-and-see approach, which means that they’ll make that decision later.

I’m not happy with that decision, but it is distinctly different from saying that they will federate with Threads.
