Dagwood222,

‘Fables’ was a comic book that was the first to use the idea of characters from fairy tales living in the modern era. When people realized that everything was already public domaine we got two shows, neither as good as the comic.

Dagwood222,

If it’s fiction, I’ll keep going unless it seems vital to the plot. Same applies for articles and light reading.

If it’s a school/work text, look it up, and then write it down.

Dagwood222,

One of those rare cases where the movie adaptation far surpasses the book. Also, if you liked McKellan as a fascist in this movie, check out his Richard III. They decided to set it in the 1930s,

Or people could stop thinking small.

Back in the day, the GOP was completely controlled by Big Business. A guy named Jerry Falwell saw how Richard Nixon’s Southern Strategy had gotten him elected and jumped in. He organized his people at the grassroots level. If there was a local Republican club that got 20 people at the average meeting, Jerry’s church group would show up with fifty. At the start, they were getting dog catchers and county clerks in, but eventually their power grew.

Dagwood222,

Context time.

Actual Police Headquarters at One Police Plaza is/was about a mile away from Ground Zero. The store shown was being used as the onsite HQ for the rescue/recovery effort.

Chocolate covered espresso beans. Think peanut M&M’s with a caffeine center. The only candy I’ve ever heard of that can actually cause a medical emergency.

Green Bones by Fonda Lee

First book is Jade City. I like that it’s set in a 1950’s tech world with the magic being only one part of the greater story. Crime, politics, family drama; it’s the Godfather with super powers.

To Your Scattered Bodies Go… by Philip Jose Farmer. Everyone who ever lived wakes up on the banks of The River.

Dagwood222,

If you want an interesting novel, try ‘Night Soldiers’ by Alan Furst. Young Bulgarian boy is killed by local fascists. His brother is then recruited by the Russians to be a spy. He’s sent to Spain to help fight Franco. Enjoy.

Dagwood222,

Funny how different countries have different traditions.

Dagwood222,

The book came out around 1998, so it might have invented the idea of cryptocurrency.

After I read it, I discussed it with another fellow. He told me that he’d shown one passage to his wife, an astrophysics student. She showed it to her professor, who told her that this was advanced math.

Try it for yourself.

Supposedly, Foch said the WW1 Armistice wasn’t peace, it was a 20 year truce.

Dagwood222,

Some people would say that WW2 started when Japan invaded China.

Dagwood222,

If you haven’t read it, ‘Cryptonomicon’ by Neal Stephenson sounds like it would be your kind of book. The story alternates between the grandfather, who helped protect the Enigma secret from the Nazis, to the grandson, who is trying to start an online bank. There is hidden treasure, heroic US Marines, mysterious wizards, and tooth extractions.

Dagwood222,

I worked retail for exactly one Christmas. The day I worked the toy department they had one album on repeat for eight hours. I hated Christmas music for years, and now it just annoys me.

Dagwood222,

“Ike At The Mike” by Howard Waldrop. Award winning short story. An elderly Dwight Eisenhower is invited to the White House. Ike famously gave up his West Point cadetship to become a jazz musician. Among the attendees honoring him is the young Elvis A. Presley, Senator from Mississippi.

Dagwood222,

First time I heard this theory was in a James Bond story. Bond meets a woman who drives a bashed up car. Same reasoning; if it looks like she’s dangerous people will steer clear of her.

Dagwood222,

When you have so many shootings that people are arguing about the statistics…

Dagwood222,

Try with ‘Nyota.’

Dagwood222,

It’s funny. They are all referred to by their last names [Dr. McCoy, Mr. Scott, Ensign Chekov] but people always assume that ‘Uhura’ is her first name.

Manhattan Special Espresso soda.
