Guys I truly don’t mean to spam the community but these are legit questions. Yesterday I posted about linux compatibility and computers and every single person gave me knowledge to use and you’re all awesome....
Announced in early August and initially planned for the end of the month, the Fedora Asahi Remix distribution is finally here for those who want to install the Fedora Linux operating system on their Apple Silicon Macs....
I would never buy something new from Apple as I don’t like them, but I have to admit that their hardware feels great to use. I’m not tech savvy enough to know where that would be coming from, but it makes me wonder how people could say that the components are so bad.
My girlfriend has a 2012 MacBook Pro and I put Fedora on it and it feels like such a great machine. The ram and the hard drive have been upgraded, but it feels incredible for an old machine.
If in 10 years you can get an old MacBook Pro for 200$, I might jump on it even if upgradeability has been lowered.
I have a Surface Go 1 with the 128gb ssd drive that I bought as a cheap computer while I got separated from my ex in 2019. I bought it for around 4-500$ with an included typecover.
While I’m really happy with it, it’s not what I’d recommend as you really need to hook it up to a monitor when you’re at home. It’s powerful enough for me with its 8gb of ram, but the lack of upgradability is a long term problem.
I guess yours sounds too expensive and already lacking in term of specs. If I were you, I’d at least look for a more powerful second hand Surface Go as Fedora runs perfectly on it (except the camera and slow blutooth for the mouse).
Don’t misunderstand me, it’s still a good experience, but it’s still the most difficult Linux optimization I’ve ever had since I started installing Linux on all my computers around 2005.
But the form factor is really great if you move a lot and it’s a good tiny laptop with the typecover.
I’ve never installed the Surface kernel so I don’t know how much it would improve the experience.
I recently made a post discussing my move to Linux on Fedora, and it’s been going great. But today I think I have now become truly part of this community. I ran a command that borked my bootloader and had to do a fresh install. Learned my lesson with modifying the bootloader without first doing thorough investigation lol....
The install was really easy even if sometimes the Surface is a bit difficult to boot on an usb drive. I don’t know why but the Usb drive is easier to boot when using ventoy on it with multiple bootable iso’s on it.
Otherwise everything is easy and I had nothing to do to make it work fine on Fedora.
I just don’t know how the installation process would have been without the typecover (keyboard).
Lately I’ve installed the Linux Surface kernel to improve the mouse bluetooth also.
I’m personally using NewsFlash at the moment, and it’s perfectly fine, but its borders are completely incongruous with my theme, I assume they’re based around Gnome and I’m on Plasma, so I’m looking for a new one and was wondering what people here use?...
I’m brand new to Linux, running Mint on an old laptop to get a few more years out of it. I can install things via CLI, but I prefer GUI if available....
Back in the day I was also dual booting windows and Ubuntu but windows was messing with the system clock.
Then I decided to just have a windows VM to be able to backup my iPhone (not my own choice😞), but I’d want to replace that VM by a MacOs so that at least I learn how to use a new system since I have to keep using windows at work anyway.
The community is a big plus on Linux and you always find someone ready to help you.
I also love the spirit of Linux where you rely way less on big corporations.
Alright, peeps, I want to build Linux on my new PC and need some help with that. On my old PC, I had kubuntu installed, which I liked (at least until downloading Skype fried most of my installers and rebuffed all attempts at deinstallation). When installing kubuntu, I had a lot of help (and by a lot, I mean my friend did like...
Are older, but Linux compatible computers capable of running the newest kernel/version of various distros?

Surface Go 2 with 4GB Ram and 4425Y worth it?
Hi! There’s no Surface on Linux Lemmy community (yet), but I didn’t feel like asking on reddit, so I thought that this community is my best bet....

Linux tablet?
What’s the best tablet to install Linux on? I am looking for something affordable (under $200) and light just to use a PDF reader with MEGA sync.
