I’m going to offer my own theory here, which doesn’t seem to be in line with the most popular theories which seem to me to be creative guesses at the origin.
I think it’s possibly from twitch.tv culture. “Kappa” was a popular emote with a smug face often used to denote sarcasm. Plenty of streamers have used the phrase “No kappa” to indicate they’re not joking, and some shortened it to “no kap”. Since it was passed on orally, it became mistranscribed to “no cap.” People were looking for an explanation for a phrase that didn’t exist, and inadvertently invented one, which became the predominant theory that you’ll find if you search for “no cap origin.”
It’s generally finding amusement in something doing what it’s supposed to do in a straight forward and effective manner, in contrast with an alternative overly complex method.
Given the (very contrived) constraints, I suppose I’d try to maximize utility. The “things”, from what I can tell, are needed most by child 1 and 7 as all the others are capable of making a living themselves. Between the two, I’d opt for #7 as they are at least providing utility to others, even if it is just for a short time.
I think you have it backwards, perhaps. Prescriptive is like when a doctor tells you what drugs to take via a prescription. That’s the old man one. (Although I think it’s quite often younger people who have recently had the idea of correct and incorrect useages of languages drilled into them!) Oh, either you edited your post, or I’m crazy. :)
Also, while too much prescriptivism is certainly obnoxious, not enough has its own problems. Language needs a certain amount of conformity to ensure were actually having a conversation about what we both think we’re having a conversation about.

You realize someone has to pay for public infrastructure and services, yes? If corporate interests do not pay the taxes that are typically expected of them, then someone else will have to cough up that money, or services will need to be cut.
You’re correct, but you’re also being a bit pedantic and ignoring the point OP is trying to make. It still illustrates the point just fine at 47.4% instead of 50%. Odds of winning 10 in a row go from 1:1,024 to 1:1,746.
About 10-20s, I left it on until it didn’t seem to be getting much hotter. I also didn’t want the battery to overheat and fail catastrophically. I think because the “wire” is such a large gauge, there’s not enough current for it to get seriously hot. In a foam cutter, you’re passing all that current through a much smaller cross-sectional area.
Edit: just to confirm, I did a little math. A 10cm steel wire with a tenth of the diameter would have a resistance of 5 ohms. That means that instead of 1% of the total heat dissipating in the thick wire, 80% of the heat is dissipating in the wire in foam cutter’s case, and there’s more total resistance, so more heat dissipation as well.
This is because:
A = π r²
R = ρ × L / A
So resistance is proportional to the material resistivity (ρ), the length (L), and the inverse square of the radius (r⁻²). That is to say, decreasing the radius by a factor of 10 increases resistance by a factor of 100.
I’ve personally spent a decent amount of time in vegan and vegan debate subreddits, so I could probably offer a bit of insight. My general approach goal was to be helpful and non-judgemental as possible, but to also be assertive. There are a few caveats in no particular order:
If a post hits r/all, you get a lot of mean and rude people, as well as trolls. Suffering them gets draining. It’s basically the cashier “it’s not ringing up so it’s free?” joke equivalent, but worse since it’s not even in good faith. There’s only so many times you can read “loll bacon” without getting a little depressed about humanity.
For those that aren’t trolling, many are highly misinformed. It can be challenging to manage their experience and present information in a way that doesn’t bruise their ego a little. I’ve slowly learned to get better at this, but it’s a process.
Both people who were helpful and those who were rude helped me transition to veganism. The “rude” vegans often raised cognitive dissonance the most and really forced me to think things through myself. I’m sure there are plenty of people who might not respond in this way, but it did help me, and a lot of other vegans have said the same.
Being vegan can be kinda depressing. When the large majority of society performs actions that you believe to be immoral, and you still have to integrate, it starts to tear at you a little. Sometimes it’s just too much to put up with, and a mean little joke at someone else’s expense slips out. That’s why we had places specifically for that sort of venting. But then people (usually with an agenda) would point to those places, and use them as examples, and you get the MEAN VEGAN stereotype.
