It’s been a bit of a shit one. Finances are rough right now as I’ve been looking for a job for quite some time, and I learned just yesterday that my roommate is moving out on the first of February and didn’t think it was something she really needed to tell me in advance. So I’ll be on the hook for the full rent amount, which is around twice what I have in my bank account right now.

I did apply for a really cool job with a queer non-profit, so fingers crossed I’ll get that and my luck will start turning around!

Hasn’t been updated since the summer, and doesn’t work with versions 0.19 of lemmy or newer. I heard the dev had twins, which yeah fair enough take all the time off your open source lemmy app.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

I used to use Liftoff, I changed to Jerboa when my instance upgraded to 0.19.

It has dark mode, landscape, and support for multiple accounts. It’s open-source if that’s the kind of thing that tickles your fancy. Also, it’s by the same dev as lemmy itself so compatibility shouldn’t be an issue going forward.

Disregarding the DE-shaming (which, lol who cares? let people use what they like) how do you even figure OP uses Gnome? I can’t make out anything on their screen from the picture apart from the neofetch.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

Uh, no need to apologize? I’m not offended at “Gnome being garbage”. I don’t feel any offense at all, to be honest.

I am slightly annoyed at the “too-bad-it’s-Gnome” comment, which is why I pointed it out. It’s fine to not like Gnome, heck, I don’t like Gnome. I don’t see why that should translate into having a shitty attitude towards people who do like it. I’m just glad people are using FOSS, whether it be some nerd dev on an obscure tiling WM perfectly customized to suit their needs, or some tech-illiterate noobie using Linux Mint and a GUI software manager.

Evkob,

I can’t stand people voluntarily using gnome

How does this affect you in any way, though?? I get being frustrated at having to use it, that blows, but why do you care if others use it?

Referring to femme-presenting people as “traps” is transphobic, originating in the idea that trans women are somehow disingenuous by showing their true selves to the world. Because horny cis straight guys might get horny about trans women (and that’s bad for some reason).

Xenophobia is to racism what homophobia is to ... ?

Is there a word that means “a hatred of gay people”, rather than “a fear of or aversion to gay people”? Surely there are people who simply hate homosexuality without necessarily fearing it, and vice versa. Someone who hates homosexuality should probably be condemned for their unreasonable and hateful prejudices, but...

“I’d be a bigot at the first sign of someone being mean to me” is an interesting argument to make.

BTW, maybe avoiding the use of “gay mafia” to refer to the queer community would make it more believable that you aren’t ignorant.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s fine to use jokingly among friends, I do the same with my friend group. It’s hardly appropriate for a serious conversation about discrimination with strangers.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

Nah if you’re an adult and you’re “scared” of gay people, you’re a bigot. Ignorance is an excuse for fear to a point. If you’re a kid getting indoctrinated into hating others, that’s one thing, but if you’re over 18 and stay “scared” of a whole group of people instead of educating yourself or even (gasp!) interacting with members of the community, that’s bigotry.

Please note that most people in my life are fairly ignorant about queer issues. Their ignorance doesn’t translate into “fear”. It usually translates into curiosity, or simply indifference. It’s not the ignorance that makes one a bigot, it’s the “fear”.

Here’s an analogy for you, if you go into a forest and find a stick and hit some animal with the stick the animal will respond defensively.

Queer people expecting rights and respect from cishet people is analogous to animal abuse, that is a good take! Love it.

Stop, we’re just on the verge of electing our Trump-like politician. I’ve had to cut out US political news because the prophecies are too foreboding.

We usually just import American issues but with a 2 to 5 year delay.

It runs Android TV, so you just need to get the APK onto your TV. You can download a file manager from the Play store (I use X-Plore) and use that to install the APK from via USB. Alternatively, you could download a web browser from the Play store (I use TV Bro) and download the APK directly on the TV.

I’m francophone and queer living under a conservative provincial government that dislikes francophones and queers, I do like to be on top of what rights they’re trying to attack this week.

Apart from that, I guess a general sense that you need to know what’s wrong if you want to fix it. Am I aware that I’m ultimately powerless to fix societal woes? Yeah, that’s why I cut back on the news, but cutting it out completely feels like giving up any hope of fixing anything. That’s just too much of a downer for me.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

Personally what I’ve found works for me is to focus on news that’s local to me, the more local the better. So I start with news about my municipality, then my province, then my country, and I try to keep it at that for the most part. Of course, world news slips through, especially American politics, but I try to keep it at bay as much as possible.

I honestly had a bit of a nervous breakdown around the start of the war in Ukraine, doomscrolling through articles and updates everyday. I realized I needed to dial back and tried to cut out all news, and that just ended up making me more anxious. Focusing on local news has been the Goldilocks zone for me. I’ll still consume stuff about world news occasionally, but it’s usually in a way that relates to my country, for example articles about Canada’s support of Israel on the world stage.

Some news sources are definitely more inflammatory than others. I’m also of the opinion that television news in general is a farce, to the extent that the best “journalists” on TV in recent memory have been comedians like Jon Stewart and John Oliver.

Looking for Notes App for Android & Linux

I am trying to slowly de-Google-ify myself by moving to open source apps, I wanna ditch google notes and evernote. I tried obsidian, standard notes, and joplin, I liked using obsidian on PC and standard notes looks nice on android but obsidian you need to pay to have sync and standard notes doesn’t do markdown unless you pay...

Unless you have a specific constraint not mentioned in your post, it would probably just be a waste of time compared to just downloading an existing rip from a torrent site. Especially considering most stuff on Disney+ is fairly mainstream and should be easy to find.

Trying to rip from Disney rather than finding a source to download it would be more time-consuming and would likely end up with worse quality than what the various scene groups get out.

Hey don’t apologize for offering free help to a stranger online! It’s much appreciated. uname -r returns “6.7.0-zen3-1-zen”, but like I said I had this issue with the standard Linux kernel as well.

Nothing stands out to me when I run dmesg in terms of errors. I’m not sure which part is the audio hardware chipset, so here is the output relating to audio. I’m running both the built-in CPU audio and GPU audio through HDMI.

Edit: Forgot to add my ALSA and Pipewire packages. For ALSA I got:

alsa-card-profiles alsa-firmware alsa-lib alsa-plugins alsa-topology-conf alsa-ucm-conf alsa-utils lib32-alsa-lib lib32-alsa-plugins pipewire-alsa tinycompress

and for Pipewire:

gst-plugin-pipewire kpipewire libpipewire libwireplumber pipewire pipewire-audio pipewire-jack pipewire-pulse wireplumber

GrapheneOS and Android are both based on AOSP, and calling/texting is such basic functionality for a mobile OS that I doubt that GrapheneOS’ implementation is much different from Android’s, if at all.

I’ve been on GrapheneOS for the past year or so, I’ve never actually enjoyed using my phone as much as I do now. No Samsung apps I can’t uninstall, no Google spyware, the only stuff running on my device is stuff I want it to run, the way I want it to run.
