I am trying to slowly de-Google-ify myself by moving to open source apps, I wanna ditch google notes and evernote. I tried obsidian, standard notes, and joplin, I liked using obsidian on PC and standard notes looks nice on android but obsidian you need to pay to have sync and standard notes doesn’t do markdown unless you pay...
Obsidian is great, and I agree the sync is too much. It does work flawlessly but Im going to try Syncthing again after my one year is up.
Another newcomer that is promising is Acreom. Doesnt require an account on PC. Currently does on mobile though. But like Obsidian, it is a pile of markdown files. No weird database silliness like Joplin does.
Yep, it’s in the community apps store for free, though highly recommend throwing some money at the dev if you find it to be useful. I’m just barely scratching the service and it’s pretty dang good.
I have recently repurposed and old Hp Stream to a home server and successfully run Immich. I really like it and even a small 500GB disk is way more than the 15GB Google offers....
I have my Immich library backed up to Backblaze B2 via Duplicacy. That job runs nightly. I also have a secondary sync to Nextcloud running on another server. That said, I need another off prem backup and will likely run a monthly job to my parents house either via manually copying to an external disk then taking it over or setting up a Pi or other low power server and a VPN to do it remotely.
I had a similar need and settled on tasks.org. Depending on your needs, this may not fit. It’s more of a Google/Microsoft tasks replacement. It’s been really nice for my needs.
I’m still new to this whole privacy and selfhosting stuff, but rclone is one of the cooler utilities I’ve come across so far. The sheer number of cloud services it can hook to is fantastic! I’d love to see your tutorial. I’m currently using Immich to backup from my phone to my server then a night Duplicacy job sends it to B2.
Lemme tell you… I’d love to use your knowledge, and have gotten some great tips on other posts and forums. But if the answer to one more of my questions starts with “you just need to …” and then has an extremely vague answer, I’ma pull the rest of my hair out.
That said, I’m building a PC right now that will be Linux based because fuck Windows and fuck Microsoft. Sincerely, a burnt out IT dude tired of hearing what fresh hell patch Tuesday brought.
What distros have you tried and thought, "Nope, this one's not for me"?
I’ve been using Linux Mint since forever. I’ve never felt a reason to change. But I’m interested in what persuaded others to move.

I’ve been using this app for quite a while now, and I like the way it’s designed, but I’m wondering if there’s a better equivalent.
Cheap Cloud/Photo Storage: BackBlaze + Rclone + Round Sync
I didn’t see this on any privacy guide, but with minimal work, you can have a cloud drive that’s accessible from your phone and laptop....
I just want to help! (lemmy.zip)
