Objection stranger, you are very wrong and have fundamental issues! You’ll never get better.

GBU_28, to lemmyshitpost in Everything happens for a reason

Smarter every day recently had a talk with NASA engineers where he said something that resonated with me.

“Its often discussed that if you could go back in time, you could change one thing, and observe a huge change in the following events.

But we never consider that we have that same power right now, today. Actions now can influence a wide variety of future outcomes.”

With some self reflection you can be the time traveler of scifi.

Some things are out of our control, but many are not, and simple changes, say, about our personal wellness or how we treat others can have big ramifications.

Except not at all? I’ve not seen any climate predictions saying the surface of earth will be a denuded hellscape, but only civilization will be destroyed. Humans will not be wiped out, they’ll just be living way worse. Resources will be challenging but will exist. Many will die, but not all. Biological life will shift massively but will exist.

A grey mush turns us into a surface like mercury, completely and utterly consumed.

Even in the worst climate predictions modern presenting societies will live.

Do I look like I know what a jpeg is?

He’s referring to a “grey mush” event where literally every molecule of the surface is consumed/processed for the machine’s use.

That’s obviously far beyond even the very worst climate change possibilities

Mmk I’ll Google those for you

Compulsion: an irresistible persistent impulse to perform an act

Impulse: a sudden desire, whim, or inclination

Inclination: a preference or tendency, or a feeling that makes a person want to do something

Preference: the power or opportunity of choosing

Addiction is the loss of power or opportunity to CHOOSE.

You seem obsessed with the assumption that I think addicts are just weakly choosing the wrong thing, or something. That’s very much not my suggestion. Deep in the core of the brain, chemical dependence pathways influence decisionmaking in a way the victim is unable to override.

I’m certainly not concerned, just making clear your ad hominem devalues your position.

Consider this paper regarding the very overlapping and complicated relationship between addiction, choice, and compulsion.

Compulsion is overridden choice!

I’m not suggesting addiction is done flippant thing, it’s a serious disease.

Quit throwing around insults then claiming I’m the one lacking integrity.

Psychological dependency is described in my comment via chemical and habitual

GBU_28, to memes in I think dancing just isn't for me

Lots of people can’t even conceive of stepping on the dance floor. I find especially here on Lemmy, lots of folks are really introverted and not agreeable to “get out there and try” style challenges. Obviously not universal, but seems quite common here. Folks seem more apt to say “I have limitations that are immovable and that’s the end of it”. Gotta respect that life they are living, even if for folks like you or I we are motivated differently.

Unstructured practice is only one form of skill enhancement. Alone it is not usually an effective tool. That’s why coaches, books, training regiments exist for all sorts of things from sports to chess to games

Lol yes. Choice has meaning. Choice here being dictated by compulsive behavior, or dominant chemical signaling is still choice. Like, your brain is doing it. Choice is not just “what color shirt will I wear today”, it is far deeper.

I’m not victim blaming or trying to fuck with you, I am focusing on the fact that words have meaning, and choice isn’t just a surface level, front brain thing. Choice is integral to the human condition, and choice and addiction are bedfellows. The latter dominating the former.

GBU_28, (edited ) to lemmyshitpost in Here as well

You choose to walk a direction, you choose to look out a window. Choice is a critical component of being human.

Addiction is the chemical overriding of the prioritization of choice.

"compulsively committed or helplessly drawn to a practice or habit or to something psychologically or physically habit-forming "

GBU_28, to lemmyshitpost in Here as well

I’d only refute the "active"part.

You physically choose to locomote towards the counter to make the purchase, you physically choose to lift the cup to your mouth.

The problem is your own mind is working against you to make that physical choice seem absolutely mandatory, via the importance of chemical signaling
