Ayn Rand

Of all the people to say that I would have never guessed it would have been her.

I have 2 siblings and our relationship for the most part was pretty good.

Until it got out that I was bi.

One of siblings is fine with it (they’re also bi).

The other took a similar stance to the rest of my relatives and has all but cut ties with me.

I say similar as most of my relatives have fully cut ties with me.

So it could be better.

They are ruled by their hate and fear of the other.

They fear their idea of the world being different than it actually is, and the only response they can come up with is a violent and/or hateful one.

Getting Over a Breakup

How have you successfully gotten over a breakup? I did not end the relationship and it was the most significant of my life. I feel confused and trying to understand why. I’m not sleeping well and my anxiety has decided to resurface. I’m ruminating. I don’t have many people to go to about this. Please don’t say I will...

Breakups can be pretty hard to cope with depending on how it ended.

The best advice I can think of is trying to think of it as an era of your life is now over. Those events from that era still have significance to you and will likely for a long time. And the best thing to do is not to dwell on them but look to the future.

What will this new era bring? Will you pick up those hobbies you’ve been thinking about but didn’t have the spare time for? Will you find new adventures in hobbies you already have? Will you focus on self improvement?

The best thing you can do is to let go.

They’re gone, they chose to move on. And now you will have to as well.

Yes they were incredibly significant to you, and for a time you were to them too. But just like eras in history those eras end and a new era begins.

Don’t dwell on the past and what could have been, you will only find pain there.

Look to the future for what could be.

And reach out to your friends/family and talk to them. It will be hard but open up to them about it. And if your family is just as supportive as mine, just your friends.

Here’s a brief(ish) personal story of how my most significant relationship ended.

Trigger warning: death and substance abuse.

A long time ago I was in a long-term committed relationship with 2 people (a man and a woman) I loved more than anything. Life was good for a time and improving. We had long-term goals for the relationship and our futures together.

Then some stuff went wrong that waa outside of our control, we could still achieve our goals but they would have been harder. We didn’t know how to handle it well. But we tried to stay on target.

Then more things went wrong that put us on a 30 day clock to sort out housing situation faster than we had hoped by a long shot.

We had nobody we could lean on for help, our only choice was to try our damnedest to make it happen.

We were running up to our deadline, stress was at an all time high.

We were working as many hours as we could trying to get the cash together faster then we thought possible.

She lost her job.

Then she died.

And a few days later he died due to drinking and driving.

Everything fell apart.

The era was over. And a new era had begun.

I handled it the worst way possible, I fell back into substance abuse.

And it took me 6 years to kick it.

Don’t do what I did, don’t lean into substance abuse (alcohol/drugs) they will only make the hurt worse.

My vision of an ideal world is a hard one to answer but does have a few key aspects to it.

Where getting sick or hurt doesn’t financially ruin someone.

Where people can seek mental health care without destroying their lives.

Where homelessness is a thing of the past.

Where no one goes hungry.

Where seeking to improve yourself via higher education doesn’t cost money.

Where school funding is based on needs rather than location.

Where people are judged by the value of their character rather than the color of their skin, who they love, or the money in their bank account.

My ideal world isn’t some far off fantasy, my ideal world is something that we can achieve in our lifetimes if we try.

Though dying may be lower risk for them people could still feel long standing effects from it. Though those are also less likely given they were vaccinated.

Statistics can be a bitch.

I like a clunk or deeper click.

But when it comes to my keyboard I like a bump with a solid bottom out, not a click.

Currently though I’ve got some damn fine clunky toggle switches for some electronic projects that are super overkill for the project but they clack so good.

Have you ever had a hyper realistic dream that you still remember after years?

I had a dream I was on a plane. A totally normal flight. Going in for a landing when things went wrong at the last minute. I swear I could feel the heat of the flames as I saw them coming through the fuselage as the plane is breaking up around me. I woke up on my feet beside my bed sweating. I’ve never had a dream like that...

Quite often in fact.

It’s pretty nice as I do a lot of creative work so if I’m struggling for inspiration I’ll usually take a nap or just go to bed a little early with a notepad nearby.

The crazy part is since I started taking meds for my ADHD it’s basically every night.

Edit: Most of mine are surreal or hyperreal though if that makes sense. By hyperreal I mean that every detail, every sensation, everything is there. Every single tiny sensation, except they are all cranked up to like 11.

For example: There you are standing on the edge of a cliff looking to the vista below. The trees sway with wind and life, flowing like seaweed caught in the current. The winds reach your face as a soft caress, lightly brushing your cheeks and running it’s fingers through your hair. The smells of earth and water fill your lungs with each breath with a slight chill. The sounds of the trees jostling and the wind swishing consume all sound but your breath.

You close your eyes to take it all in.

Your breathing deepening with each breath.

You feel your self slipping backwards away from the cliff but you know the ground will welcome you.

You gently stop on the moss covered ground. It’s like velvet on your skin.

Running your fingers through it you feel every little branch.

You let yourself fall deeper in sleep as the darkness consumes you.

The smells leave your nose, the wind leaves your hair, the velvety moss loses its touch.

You wake in your bed, feeling more rejuvenated then you have in days.

I take atomoxetine for my ADHD and my doctor told me to take melatonin to help me sleep due it causing insomnia.

So I guess it’s the combination of both that does it for me.

Hell last night’s dream was like watching a movie.

I’ve got a few

I mostly have them to keep different activities separate

Basically one for memes, one for news, and one for creative things.

All sfw though as that’s just they way I kick it.

Install software relevant software to your hobbies

I’d recommend finding out what kind of video card it has though as that’s a big deciding factor in what you can use it for.

Damn, about 3 TB

I have a NAS with about 40TB of available space and I keep putting stuff on it.

Most of that is 3D models and pictures.

For some people it’s not too bad, and during the summer it’s not that bad.

During the winter though it’s hell. The days are short that you basically never see the sun.

During the whole affair though you’ll have to supplement your Vitamin D, especially during the winter.

If you’re a high schooler you could always apply for a job at a local business

Provided you’re old enough that is

I’d recommend trying to figure out why you’re failing out of school, school is pretty useful.

Or you could look into picking up a hobby to take up some time with something you could enjoy. Drawing, 3d modeling, writing, reading, cycling, tabletop gaming, photography, etc.

I'm not sure what I expected clicking those links in Jerboa, but it's true they do crash Jerboa when clicked

Gormadt,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yes

Proper preparation is required though, don't just ram your dirty unlubed booger picker in there or you'll have a bad time

Personal recommendation is to trim your nails, wear gloves, apply lube, relax, and go slow

Have fun, be safe, and remember the golden rule of toys: No silicone lube with silicone toys. Always check material compatibility before use.

Does anyone else hope the bulk of Reddit stays there?

I think my favorite thing about Lemmy is that it feels like Reddit used to. Less negativity, more engaged users (I think). I know it will be fun to watch Reddit die, but if I put spite aside what I’m really mad at Reddit about is more about what Reddit became and maybe part of that is when the general internet user started...

I helped a lot of people with niche hardware and software troubleshoot things for years on Reddit, I'm planning to leave my comments up because of that.

The amount of times I would search for something to only find threads of people asking about an issue followed by comments that say "deleted by [X software on github] in protest for [issue that was solved years ago]" and responses praising the deleted comment for helping them is too damn high.

Or hell trawling the internet archive for dead sites trying to find solutions.

I don't want people to have to go through that.

I don't care where my answers come from, I just want to troubleshoot crap in a timely manner.

Side effects of nitric oxide?

Hi. I just started buteyko method, and it’s supposed to relax you and release nitric oxide when you do it. I did a session earlier, and I started seeing visuals/swirling of colors in my eyes. I’m pretty sure it was the nitric oxide being released. Are there any major side effects to nitric oxide? Could I get super high if my...

You should talk to your doctor about what you're doing and experiencing. Because it sure sounds like you're either doing a breathing technique wrong and suffocating yourself or you're doing it right and have an underlying condition that's making whatever you're doing dangerous.

TLDR talk to a medical professional not social media about it.
