It’s a different philosophy. KDE gives you a default setting, and all the options you need to fuck it up customize it.
Gnome gives you the default and an API for extensions to customize it. Install one of the big ones like V-Shell and you’ll have more options than you know what to do with.
I’m going to replace my host os on my shitty laptop with Linux specifically puppy Linux or alpine Linux from scratch and I need to know how will I get started and make it easier for myself, I use a HP notebook 540
Puppy Linux is mostly focused on tiny install size (<300MB), built from source and hasn’t had a new version in over 3 years.
Alpine is even more minimalist and designed to run on embedded devices or in containers.
Go with a desktop-oriented or general purpose distro instead.
I remember one time I installed a lot of themes for my session and I broke something and the themes changed my icon files forever and I had to reinstall Ubuntu!!...
Why don’t you chill out about your Linux setup a bit, and instead of doing stuff to your Linux system, do stuff with it.
Open Source software lives from the contributions of the users, and there’s plenty to do everywhere.
You could use your free time to actually make a difference and help out other Linux users!
I’m between distros and looking for a new daily driver for my laptop. What are people daily driving these days? Are there any new cool things to try?...
Are there good Microsoft word alternatives that support Linux (I don’t mind closed source)? Libreoffice is meh and only office is quite good, but are there any better ones? Also, is there a way to install word on Linux using wine? When I do that my laptop just overheats and loses internet connection.
Instead of linking to articles full of buzz-words, can you explain what’s the difference between this distro and Fedora Silverblue?
I’m guessing the “spirit of Ubuntu” means they took Silverblue and preconfigured some stuff.
When I updated Debian Unstable 2 days ago, it forced me to uninstall isc-dhcp-client in order to upgrade network-manager.
So I looked up the reason and found the ISC’s blog post. I shared it here thinking it might be interesting to some, since Debian’s packages are the basis for a lot of other distros that might be affected soon.
I think you could install your system using a generic kernel, package it up as ISO and just boot it on basically any other machine with the same architecture. Proprietary bits like NVidia driver and firmware could pose a problem.
That’s basically what a live USB is.
First, make sure your VM has access to the internet, for example with ping 8.8.8.8
Then do sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
The file should include a line that is exactly this: deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
(or it could have kali-last-snapshot in place of kali-rolling)
If not, replace everything in the file with the line above and save the file with Ctrl+O, then close the editor with Ctrl+X
Then run:
both Linux operating systems have 1. A friendly user interface, 2. A hidden terminal, and 3. A locked down root user, to avoid dangerous actions!! Why do people seem to dislike Android when Ubuntu is similar to it??
Same. Windows-key opens the workspace overview with a global search field.
I only have the system tray and a clock on my desktop, which I can view with Windows-key+spacebar.
No. I need the functionality of a full desktop environment.
And KDE’s workspace overview is awesome. One keypress and I see all open windows, all workspaces and a global search field that switches to a program when it already has an open window and opens a new window if not.
And a tiling WM on top of KDE would be pointless to me since the behavior of a tiling WM can be configured through the GUI in KDE without installing anything extra.
Is it shallow, or petty, to decide based on name alone? Yeah, pretty much, but there’s probably something, a product or service or site, that the name has made you gloss right over it or jump to it ASAP....
Heya folks, some people online told me I was doing partitions wrong, but I’ve been doing it this way for years. Since I’ve been doing it for years, I could be doing it in an outdated way, so I thought I should ask....
It’s not outdated, just less necessary now. With SSD’s, you can just copy your /home back from your daily backup after reinstallation, which takes all of 5 minutes.
I posted this as a comment in another post but when I got done I realized it would probably just be better as its own post. I’m sure I could find the answers I need myself but frankly I trust the userbase here more than most online articles....
I’m a big proponent of using Linux, but don’t do it.
A small company I support recently almost went under cause the boss and his former IT provider were both open source enthusiasts and set up his whole network with Linux.
Then he needed a secretary, and all applicants backed out when they heard they’d have to use Linux.
And he couldn’t find an enterprise resource planning software that ran on Linux.
I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux,
is in fact, systemd/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, systemd plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning systemd system made useful by the systemd corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by IBM.
Many computer users run a modified version of the systemd system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of systemd
which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the systemd system, developed by Lennart Poettering.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the systemd operating system: the whole system
is basically systemd with Linux added, or systemd/Linux. All the so-called “Linux”
distributions are really distributions of systemd/Linux.

I used to think I found the perfect, stable, boring system with Debian + KDE Plasma....
I found it! The manual! I'm not sure it's helping me though... (lemmy.world)

this is just a meme, I know that everyone is different and not all GNOME or KDE users are like that!!
