Karyoplasma,

You cannot block YouTube ads with a pihole.

Karyoplasma,

They already do make more than “a little profit” from YouTube. The shareholders demand infinite growth tho, so Google has to nickle and dime their users for even more profit. The bane of any publicly traded company.

Karyoplasma,

You’re still adding views to the video and engage by liking which is good for the influence metrics. Google uses that to ask for higher prices to show ads on that video. Well, they give the influence metrics to advertisers and they have to decide themselves how much showing an ad on this video would be worth for them. It’s like an instant auction, there is no fixed price. So, while you are freeriding, the compensation of you not seeing ads is mainly covered by advertisers.

To be clear, advertisers are not paying more because they pay Google for an ad that is blocked (that’s not happening), they pay more because Google uses your views to tell advertisers that this video is a good investment.

Disney is gouging customers with a near doubling of subscription costs. (sh.itjust.works)

Disney is raking its customers over the coals with a 75% price hike for their annual subscription (originally $80.) People wonder why piracy is on the rise.Multiple commenters are saying I’m off base about the 75% price increase. My payment less than a year ago was $79.99. Here’s the proof.

Karyoplasma,

I have yet to see a single shred of evidence that a memory bit flipping has caused any problems past 2008 or so. Maybe another person has found some case where it has, but when I was researching for my own server, I couldn’t find a single one.

Not server-related, but an instance where an inexplicable bit flip caused a stir is Super Mario 64 speedrunning. There is a level that is notoriously slow to navigate and during a playthrough a community member “discovered” a skip that warps you about halfway through the level. There is a video of it happening on live stream, but to this day someone has yet to reproduce the skip. Fiddling around with the game’s memory showed that the behavior happens when a single bit is flipped. All in all, it was likely a one-off error on the hardware that happened at exactly the right time in exactly the right place. The incident is known as the “TTC upwarp” and there is a $1000 bounty to claim if you can provide a working set of instructions to reproduce it on real hardware.

Karyoplasma,

That’s why I specified a time period 😉

To be completely honest, I kinda did an oopsie because it completely slipped my mind that although it happened in 2020, the technology involved is indeed pre-millenium.

Karyoplasma,

What I miss are the gaming communities. There is no talk about games I play on Lemmy, just general gaming communities and I never browsed r/gaming either. Biggest let-down: PoE even has a dedicated Lemmy instance but it’s empty and abandoned.

There is just not enough demand because only a minor fraction of reddit users got hit by the 3rd-party app slaughter. The vast majority doesn’t care and still stayed on reddit. It was the expected outcome.

Hot take of the day: What doesn’t help with this is how fractured communities are throughout the instances. What I mean by this is if I subscribe to “World News” on lemmy.world, I won’t see the posts from the same type community on other instances, like “World News” on beehaw, in my subscriber feed unless I subscribe to them too (or someone crossposts). This adds an unnecessary level of micro-management and probably also drives people away from Lemmy. The biggest strength of Lemmy is so-to-speak also its biggest weakness.

Karyoplasma,

I only get the posts from communities I am directly subscribed with. So if there is something like syndication, it does not work for me.

Karyoplasma,

I went through a long period of transition before cutting out animal produce entirely, but have now been vegan for a good few years.

This is the way. It’s like a relationship: if you have to force it, it’s gonna be shit.

I cut down on meat significantly in the past 3 years. I eat mostly vegetarian, fish once a week and meat every once in a while. Overall, my meat consumption decreased by about 90% which I call good enough and I don’t really have the intention to change that.

Karyoplasma,

Brb hiding in a black hole in the hopes that the future will be better.

Karyoplasma,

About the same as my reddit activity before I left.

I don’t have Instagram or Twitter and Facebook is just a glorified birthday reminder that I check every other week. You could probably count the number of my replies on public posts on Facebook on one hand.

Karyoplasma,

I’m way too lazy to update filter lists every day, so I just use Redirector to redirect the watch page to Invidious.

Karyoplasma,

You are being unlucky is what you are doing wrong. The changes on YT are not being rolled out to all users at the same time. You could just be in a location or in a part of the network where changes are applied first. Nothing you can do to change that, just wait for the filter lists to catch up. Or migrate to piped or Invidious.

This whole “Firefox, Firefox, Firefox” chanting as if it prevents the ad block detection is ridiculous. The reason why FF users got spared for longer is because the marketshare of FF is so low, that it took longer until most of them were affected purely based on random chance.

I use Chrome on my work laptop and FF on my PC and I either get the detection message on both or I don’t get it on either device.

They bundle YT Music in your subscription because they wanted a share in music streaming, invested in an infrastructure on their platform and then realized that their service doesn’t offer enough to make people want to use it over their competitors’ music streaming services. Instead of taking that loss or making their service worth using, they bundle the shit nobody wants with what everyone needs and use that to justify a price hike.

If there was a basic subscription that just removes ads on the videos I click on without any other useless crap attached to it, I would pay for that. But no, it’s predatory, anti-consumer bullshit, so I just block their ads.

Karyoplasma,

Last part is already done. Ads are delivered by the same DNS as the video, which is why DNS-based blocking methods like Pihole don’t work for YouTube video ads.

If you meant that Google will re-encode every video on their platform and insert ads like the sponsor segments, that’s not feasible. Ads ads served on a bidding basis and the advertiser who pays most, gets their ad delivered. That would be Impossible unless you keep multiple copies of the video with different ad segments.

Karyoplasma, (edited )

Prominent example is printer hardware and the ink. Hardware is sold at little mark-up or at a loss and then they force you to use their iteration of liquid gold. Printer ink is dirt cheap to manufacture and costs more than human blood.

Karyoplasma,

On Twitch they managed to outplay even uBlock, because the streaming is realtime and if you skip the ad segments, there’s no data to fall back to and the backend won’t send you the regular segments until the ad break is over (from what I understand). So at best you get a waiting screen instead of an ad.

Yes, you get a “commercial break in progress” banner, but it’s not loading ads when watching through HLS.

Ads on Twitch are not nearly as bad as on YouTube tho, so I actually have an exception for Twitch ads. I usually only watch esports tournaments and they make sure there are no ad breaks during games, just between segments. And on the rare occasion that I watch a regular stream, I get an ad or two maybe once every 45 minutes, which is fair.

Karyoplasma,

Pre-roll ads are stupid, yeah. At least give me some time to figure out if I want to watch the stream… But that a thing that’s also worse on YT since they removed dislike count. Is it another clickbaity jump-cut-ridden garbage video or is it actually information? Roll the dice to find out!

Dark type has nothing to do with being down on your luck, disillusioned or worn out, but encapsulates using unhonorable techniques when fighting. Sucker Punch, Knock-Off, Throat Chop, Bite, etc.

That’s why Gloom is not a dark type.

Karyoplasma,

The Mad Max open world game is so underrated. I bought it without much expectation because I liked the setting and then it was one of the few games I 100-percented.

Karyoplasma,

White US Americans. If you talk about your “heritage” in Europe, people will consider you clinically insane and avoid you like the pest.

Karyoplasma,

Unicode description says “dagger knife” up their “peach”.

Karyoplasma,

Brain transplants are impossible.

Karyoplasma,

It has never been done. Not even partial brain transplants have been performed in humans.

What you’re remembering could be taking undamaged cells of your own brain to replace damaged brain tissue elsewhere. That has been done successfully, but I don’t know how the procedure is called.
