Ya, but you’re overlaying all that stuff, codecs, nvidia, etc. ublue works out of the box and updates are quicker due to not having to re-overlay everything. It’s just less friction. Also it comes with automatic updates enabled which is really nice (and safe in an immutable, intrinsically rollbackable environment)
NixOS is the new Arch… (cat, meet pigeons) Unfortunately It doesn’t have as much basic training as Arch did (which archinstall obviates, not that I think this is a bad thing, it’s time is here), which did so much to improve community. Unfortunately NixOS’s doco is woeful, while ArchWiki is gold standard.
I say this as an ex Arch type who moved to Fedora, now ublue-kinoite, waiting for Nix to mature enough to daily (although I do have a T440p with 3 boot drives not doing much, hmm)…

Anyone able to compare this with your own SearxNG instance ? I recently set one up, bit of pain in that, but being able to blacklist content farms has been really nice (bye fandom) and the list provided really improves coding search. Choosing what search engines I like (and adding new ones) really helps deshittify search results, bangs, pipe it hrough a vpn etc… Haven’t dived that deep and it’s already leaps and bounds better than my previous search experience.

Fedora immutable (ublue kinoite) has been so bulletproof. Moved from Arch, which is now on distrobox, so painless. Now ~ 1 year… 2 laptops + desktop, other is destined for NixOS…

Why not both ? Toolbox is the fedora/redhat solution, which is the why, and makes it the choice when something’s in the fedora repositories, or if you want to trial it before (considering) rpm-ostree install, but an Arch distrobox gets you the AUR, not to be sneered at…

It’s fairly trivial to craft a dummy file that has the same hash as any given file, the chance of that happening randomly is infinitesimal, hence the usefulness of hashing, but it has been done in the past as a way to poison torrents.

I like Kinoite, have been happy for a year or so (how time flies). Pretty bulletproof, automatic updates and rollbacks, lotsa good stuff. One minor but relevant gotcha is it doesn’t like docker particularly much, I found the path of least resistance was to move to podman (which is more secure, can be easily turned into (–user) system.d units and has a cool auto update feature), podman-compose is your friend…
Beets will work, but you have to put in the effort to get all your music imported correctly (you have a backup, right!), then lastfm plugin will work fine (and metadata, and album art, and lyrics, and …). Once you get started, it’s pretty easy to add new stuff in. It does tend to work better with albums, I’ve mostly moved to getting an album when I’ve wanted a single song, because space is cheap, and I’ve found some interesting stuff that way.
Another one is close to biting the dust. Sci-Hub is out, Z-Lib got ran off like a dog and now IA is going to remove a host of books because these publishers just can’t stop being money-hungry bastards....
And yet when libgen was broken a couple of days ago it sent me to the broken libgen for the (admittedly obscure) thing I was after. Perhaps caching I dunno. Still, glad it’s there…
