PM_Your_Nudes_Please, to asklemmy in What do you think would happen if Putin was assassinated right now?

If Putin loses an arm, all of his doppelgängers will need to lose an arm too. Otherwise they’ll be immediately identified as doppelgängers.

It’s a pretty well known thing that Putin frequently uses lookalikes for public appearances. It’s apparently an old habit from when he was a KGB agent. So if someone snipes him from a rooftop, it’s probably not even him; He can claim to have miraculously survived the shooting, then carry on as if nothing happened.

No more than a standard connection. Every cable inherently acts as an antenna, so that’s why we try to avoid running them parallel to power lines and other things that would give off audible interference. If you actually want to reject interference, you’d need a balanced signal. Regular RCA and 1/4” are both unbalanced, so they’ll both pick up interference regardless of how they’re tied together.

When dealing with unbalanced cable, the most important part is making sure your signal to noise ratio is good. If you can get a hot enough signal that your gain can be lowered, you may be able to reduce the interference completely below your noise floor. Of course there are arguments against this (like how running things that hot could potentially mean you’re clipping your outputs, which introduces a whole host of other issues) but as a general rule, you want your gain to be as low as possible, so you can reduce the amount of background interference and noise you’re picking up.

My coworker and I are currently trying to devise a good spot to hide this in the office. Like behind a door with the head poking out, or inside of a rarely used cabinet. When I tell you that my soul would momentarily exit my body as soon as I saw it out of the corner of my eye…

As a quick reminder to everyone: Researchers have to pay to get their papers published in scientific journals. They receive no money back from those journals. The journals are all double-dipping by charging both the author and the reader to use them. It isn’t stealing from researchers when researchers don’t get paid for your usage regardless.

In fact, one of the most ethical ways to get access to research papers is to go to journals, find the author(s) of the paper you want to read, and email them directly to politely ask for a copy. They’ll gladly send it to you for free, because they also hate the journal system that they’ve been forced into using.

From what I know, the mineral oil builds are usually more for novelty than utility. Mineral oil isn’t a particularly good heat conductor, and it’s several times harder to push around than air is, so it’s not great for efficient thermals. It’s usually just done as a sort of “lol look at what I could do” build by people who have more money than sense.

“Ugh, I guess we can use our fallback vendor. Give Incel Inc. a call. I hate working with them cuz we have to double-check all of their work. But it’ll at least keep things running. Tell our folks that we’re authorizing overtime during the holiday season, so we can have enough women to run QA on Incel’s work.”

The issue is visibility. Just like self-publishing a book, you’re in an uphill battle to even get your work seen. If you ever want to be cited by future publications, your research needs to be easy for future researchers to find and access. And traditionally, that has been done by consolidating studies via scientific journals.

Sure, you could try to start your own FOSS version of a journal. But that will require web developers, hosting costs, and the enthusiastic support from (and adoption by) other researchers. Because if nobody uses your system, it’s worthless for it’s intended purpose.

At that point, just get a custom domain with a catch-all email system. Any emails sent to the @[domain] address will hit your inbox, so you can do things like Target@[domain] and Walmart@[domain]. Then if you start getting spam from one of those, you know who leaked it and you can filter them into spam. All without needing to go through the hassle of creating a new email address.

Hell, my password generator (Bitwarden) even has the option to create custom usernames for a catch-all system. It can either do them randomly (like the passwords) or pull them from whatever site I’m making the account on. So like it’ll pull the site’s title and use that as the e-mail address, then append the @[domain] to the end automatically.

Amazon Basics’ line of braided USB cables is comparable to Anker, btw. Lots of people estimate that they’re made on the same production line.

I bought a three pack of their lightning cables five or six years ago. Every single one of them sees daily use (at my work desk, in my car, next to my bed) and every single one is still working just fine. Hell, they outlasted the phone I bought them for.

Alternatively: If time travel exists and Hitler is canon, then that means time travelers have collectively decided that killing Hitler is the worse option. A nearly infinite number of time travelers have already tried it, discovered it’s a bad idea, then gone back again to stop themselves from killing Hitler.

Which actually has some merit, simply due to the fact that Hitler is pretty widely regarded as a terrible tactician. He was great at inspiring his cult of personality… But when it came to war, he was pretty awful at making good decisions. It’s possible that if someone else were in charge of the Nazis, that they could have won.

PM_Your_Nudes_Please, to asklemmy in What is a nifty little feature modern gadgets have lost?

My point is that any sort of radio would be immediately drowned out by the massive amounts of EM interference as soon as you tried to charge.

In fact, professional audio devices often have to take extra precautions to avoid their power cables from becoming accidental antennas; Anyone who used a cheap set of computer speakers back in the 2000’s and 2010’s will know the distinct buzzing pattern that preceded a text message or phone call. That’s because cheap speakers would use unshielded power sources, and simple circuitry which didn’t bother to isolate the amplifier from the power.

Yeah, I actually read her last book in the series first, (it’s a distant sequel, very far removed from the rest of the series), and I can attest to the fact that she grew tremendously. I went back and read the first book, and was surprised at how different the last book was.
